A full face shield is very useful around the shop. I wear Jackson shields (any welding supply or online) and they would be ample but you might like one of the more modern style Uvex shields. I even wear one using a Dremel (because Dremel wire brush strands and cutting disk fragments fly off a high velocity!). A heavy coat or jacket (motorcycle jackets work well, I use my old ones for welding outdoors) will slow down fragments. You are correct to be cautious! My friend "shot" himself in the shoulder with a lock shackle fragment when using a cold chisel. Went in about 1/4"! He was wearing a T-shirt.

LockPickingLawyer I have to question the feasibility of doing such an attack in position though, here you have it in a vice and can easily stay out of the line of fire. In the real world how you deploy the lock largely effects how secure it is. For instance on your local bike rack/ streetlight your in a more public space you need to shield what you're doing from prying eyes so you could open the lock in this way but your gambling on the head coming off. I can tell you from industry that we don't use nut splitters to remove nuts and bolts because of this danger if its not backing off with an impact/ impact sockets and penetrating oil we cut the bolts mostly with a torch so that the metal gets to stress relieve as were removing it. What it shows is that these types of locks are vulnerable to this no matter how sturdy but compromising the lock in this way can be incredibly dangerous. If a person is willing to risk life/limb to steal a bike then there's really not a whole lot your gonna be able to do to stop them. I guess the next move if your making this type of lock would be to increase the rivet size by a few mm leave the core how it is and coat the rivets in a ceramic coating that fragments more, then again what you've created there could be classified as a booby trap and would be illegal.

realistically, most bike thiefs aren't going to be able to clamp this tightly in a garage, and I don't know if they'll have the torque needed to do this. Even in a controlled envionment the chain lasted 3 minutes. In addition, this required a rivet AND a nut splitter. I think that this product is strong enough to deter most bike thiefs, who will probably chose a different bike to steal at this point.

No clamp or vise was needed. I (or anyone) could have been done in it about 5 seconds; you'd just use a cordless impact wrench instead. You could use a small handheld hydraulic nut cracker. The bigger issue would be to avoid getting shot by the flying rivet.

In Singapore we have a much better solution. We don't use bike locks. We don't lock our doors. When shops close on our mass transit, they just put black table cloths on top of the goods knowing everything will be there in the morning. Theft is almost unheard of. Why? We have extremely strict and 100% enforced immigration with heavy background checks. We have great public housing and work programs so homeless do not exist. We have mandatory death penalty for drug dealers with a 99% conviction rate, carried out within 1 year of sentencing. We have mandatory jailing, drug program, and supervised work program for addicts to make them productive self-sufficient members of society again. We have public humiliation via stripping and caning that will make it hard to sit for several months for thieves so that they are known in the community and will think twice before ever doing that again and make an example to others. Almost all citizens will report any unlawful behavior immediately to authorities that will investigate, unlike America "snitches get stitches" criminal culture. When we went to the park we would put our phones in our purses on a park bench and when done with our jog we would know the purse would still be there. Lowest crime rate city in the entire world despite 8 million population.

I disagree. The thief can work undisturbed with the nut splitter because it makes basically no sound until the lock is broken. Once broken, it doesn't matter how loud the single bang is. While you (may) scramble to get up to check what this was, the thief is already enjoying his new ride.

@@johndododoe1411if one plate is larger than the other, the apex of the wedge will be difficult to center on the seam. It will be awkwardly positioned and has a further chance of sliding off instead of finding the groove, altho you might be able to modify the nut splitter by grinding the wedge into the size of the rivet itself and try to crack the rivet out of the hole. At that point, just cut the damn lock with an angle grinder or steal the whole bike rack.

well, no surprise here. But for all who fear for the safety of their bikes: Locks are not about making them unstealable, its all about making the stealing process so time consuming, that the thiefs will simply look for easier prey. I secure my bike with three locks when i have to leave it somewhere public - a chain, a folding lock and a u-lock (all three top-notch). its a four thousand euro bike and it has been standing unbeaten for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and three years now. Use pitlock for the parts (they TRIED to take my brooks, as some marks showed, but gave up^^) and take it inside at home (not the garage or shed) and you should be able to enjoy your bike until you want a new one.

I'm an automotive technician, and I can simply explain what happened here. The nut splitter cut the rivet in a compression or slip split. What happens is, while you apply force to cut the nut, the tool stops moving in. While you apply even more force eventually cut piece (in this case the rivet) gives way sleightly, and causes the tools cutter to "jump", this sudden decompression hammers the nut just enough to cause a violent separation of the component you want cut. Hope this helps your "autopsy". Cheers Z

The twisting torque of the screw mechanism is easier to apply than the enormous pressure being applied to the wedge. A pair of locking pliers on the nut splitter would be more than enough. The vice is only being used here to make the whole thing easy to see on camera, not as a necessary part of the operation.

When this kind of lock was new on the market - or at least when I first took notice of it - it looked like a really good idea, being much lighter than a chain and much more flexible than a U-Lock. But I always questioned the riveted construction - though I never knew how to efficiently defeat it. This nut splitter is a real danger I would say. It doesn’t make a lot of noise and requires almost no skill. Thanks for your great videos once again. I think I will keep my security chain bike lock - simple yet effective.

I assume getting the plastic off wasn't that much work and though it was held in a vice the nuts splitter has a square on the body to take a spanned so this is fairly easy to do in the field. Of course these aren't normal tools bike thieves carry so unless they know they are specially going after this lock they may still fail. I'm not sure the washer is actually there for any protection of the joint though, u thing that is there for spacing as the bars are too thick to press an offset in them. Th only way I can see to protect against this attach is to open up the gap so the wedge has no effect. I wounder if list of lower grade locks are better than one of this grade. Or maybe a specific lock designed for that bike which puts the week point in a hard to reach place.

As I was listening (decent DAC and headphones) there's a point (starts at about 4:30) where the microphone picks up a sound that I recognize as critical material-stress from back when we did material theory in school (decades ago). From the tests where we pulled metal bars until they stretched and cracked. You also see the material of the rivet start to flake a little. I am curious, did you feel a shift in tension too? You shifted the grip just after the first little crack. Thanks for the jump-scare though, the headphones really helped.

Still took about 2 minutes and very visible work on the bike, also, if you also have an alarm on your bike (or the lock) that would also go off. So, it's still good enough for going into the supermarket. This is more of a danger if you leave an expensive bike outside over a long period of time which is never a good idea - there are crews with MiniVans and battery charged angle grinders which will just do a short driveby and the bike is gone within minutes even with the beefiest U-locks available.

i may be late, but honestly, yeah. even though LPL broke the lock, he had it stuck in place where it couldn't move around. if you lock your bike up correctly, the weak point in the lock would be very loose, which would mean that if someone tries to break it, they would put their strength into simply moving the joint side to side, instead of prying it open

Could you try this again, however just try to do it like a normal thief would do in a hurry, straight between the plastic and crank it down fast, im curious as to if the protective ring itself is strong enough to defeat the attack provided it ends up being what gets "squashed". Basically re-do this as if you were not aware of the protective ring, and were in a hurry to "get in and get out fast" like a thief would be in action.
