My dad used to build 421 sbc for late model dirt cars back in 80s,90s. They were absolute monsters would make over 600hp rev instantly and run wide open all race long pretty much. My first memories are handing him wrenches and the sweet sound of those engines. He is a master machinist and mechanic since he was like 19. Seems like I can never absorb all the information in his head. He’s forgot more then I’ve learned in 39 years 😂

400 sbc, great motors, 2 bolt blocks only, 4 bolt motors while being x-rayed have a Crack somewhere, usually in lifter galley, use the 2 bolt and add splayed caps, have 2 use small base circle cam, torque monsters, I like factory stroke with 6 inch rods, wiseco pistons

Built a 400 with a dart block, AFR 220 heads, Bullet Cam .675/.694 - 275/285@.05 110LC, 6.0 Callies rods, Callies crank, Diamond Pistons, 13.5cr, Edelbrock SV 2 ported intake, BLP 950 carb ran on 110 race gas. made 670hp@6800/585tq@4500. (Should have set it up for E-85 probably would have run a little better) . I like what you did and how you built your engine, especially making the numbers on a engine built for pump gas and nitrous. Let us know how it does at the track!

I like the 400 sbc engines . I built a 406 for a 32 Ford street rod and it was a hand full at times . Great build and a Great video .

when i ported and polished my block, i only got 88 horsepower. My hats off to you, you are a heck of a engine builder. Nice content bruh, I am doing a similar sbc build. 13.5 to 1 e85 street/strip mild solid roller and would love the power you made. Nice skills my brother. Zepplin is for winners. Lol

All that attention to detail helps you get to know your engine on another level. If you can carry that through the entire build, you will have an engine that will serve you well for a good while. Myself, 1 machine shop, 2 machinest friends with measuring device's i didnt have, assembled my first 383. Iron heads, healthy solid mechanical cam, single plane with a 750 dp. It ran the 1/8th mile and around town for 20+ years. Now its .040 over with aluminum heads and a hydraulic roller cam. This is the 3rd summer with the improved verson. I let the guys at the speed shop pick the parts and assemble it. Dyno said 543 hp at 6300 rpm. With 4.56 gears, a strong powerglide, and a 9in converter, it is slow in a stock body and interior 69 Nova. 7.08 in the 1/8 mile. But its fun, and it has not broken parts, yet.

I run water line from each side of pump between center cylinders about 3/4 inch from deck really great for any small block especially 400 .

Great job you make as much power as my big block and only about 3 cubic inches I have a 427 60 over so a 439 it's a mild build for my daily driver it's got about 10.5 to 1 compression afr 265 oval port heads a Howard's hydraulic roller it 235x241@50 with a 108 lsa I do have a solid roller for it but not sure if I want to use it or not it's got 256x260 duration @50 and 666 lift I was think with a 1.8 rocker it would have right at 700 lift I just hate to have to change springs and do all that work after I dynoed it and I don't want to put more money out on dynoing it again it made 661 hp 605 torque with the hydraulic roller I think I'll just hang on to that cam for when ever I freshen it up or another build.great video thanks for sharing it

i learned how to detail an debur an perp sbc blocks and JB Weld SS screens and install magnetic plates an if you run a factory block.Thats what i do...cause when things let go i like to try an keep top problems on the top end an bottom end problems down there the best i can.I try to keep the cost of opperation under control the best i can anytime you buzz these mother-Fers above 6500G it could cost you $3500 to put it back together if things go south on you. The 400 sbc is a good displacement to build a Comp Mill...😎💯✌

Just scored a '74 or '75 400cid engine out of a '75 3/4 ton pickup. It's all original with points distributor still on it. Hopefully the bores will clean up at no more than .040 thou over. Shoot'n for 550+hp on pump gas with 220cc heads. Probably end up around 420cid. Internally balanced with 6 inch rods and an 3.875 stroke 9000series Scat crank. Compression ratio with flat top hyperutectic pistons should be around 10.8 to 1 with the block zero decked. The combo all revolves around the hydraulic roller cam at 236° duration at .050 on a 112° LSA and .580 lift with 1.5 ratio rockers. I'm going with 1.6 ratio Comp ultra magnum rockers to cheat the relatively small cam up to over .600 lift. Edlbrock ProFlow EFI system complete with single plane intake, injectors, fuel rails and 1000cfm throttle body. Box nose S-10. Can haul my bike around in the back of it, no problem. Makes loading much easier than full size trucks.

I like that combo, just finished one six months ago (427 cid) and got close results, 577lbs torque at4500rpm and 601hp at 6500, hydraulic roller and chinese heads and I assume yours is on pump gas too.

Very much like your build but i'll sleep better a night knowing my 640 hp. pump gas 399ci is sitting in a Dart Little M block.

Just get a dart block 434 rotating assembly. 421 stroker on weak block is a short term high....

Very very nice looking engine. I'm curious though. I've seen other 400 builds where the deck has had pipe plugs installed in all the water passages, and then milled flat. What is the purpose of this and why did you choose not to do this?

Who makes those rockers. They look like they're pedestal mounted in pairs. Kind of a step between stud mounted and a shaft rocker setup. Does the cost fall between a good stud mount and shaft rocker setup? Nice build. Whats the compression ratio end up at? This thing should absolutely kill it on both the street and strip.

I was always told that a two bolt could only handle 450hp on its best day.

The 400 has over heating issues because the cylinders have no flow between them. They are siamesed. They added steam holes in the deck near where the cylinders meet. You must drill holes in any cylinder head that is not the original 400 head. I don't see that was done here. The gasket doesn't match the block either. I have stayed away from them for that reason. That amount of horsepower is going to create a lot of heat that cannot be dissipated evenly.
