It's definitely going to make for a great video series. I love these ones.. the more that's wrong with something the more you ramble, the more you ramble the more we learn. Looking forward to next class!

It looks like Weller 120/240 soldering gun was used. Love the rant!
@jimbeaux49882 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. I used to do emergency fixes and only had the big Weller. It had two temperatures. Too much and not enough. Fumbling around with it, burnt a lot of wires. Messy joints just like what I'm seeing here.

OMG your Jesus wept reference absolutely slayed me - not quite as much as the work your showing inside of this one.

I learn something whenever you dive into a dysfunctional amp of any vintage, but when you get a jewel like this (albeit it in need of a good polish), it's just amp porn to me. The Comfort Suite card fix was pretty unreal; I'd almost suggest that you preserve it to the extent possible as a part of this amp's history...looking forward to the next installment...

Nothing gets said of your soldering Lyle, but it's really beyond "workmanship". It's art. I've noticed you do really neat and thorough joints in spaces that most people would be lucky to connect at all. It's always something to see.

No ego on you sir. You inspire me to be as neat as possible. This poor amp had a visit from "the cobbler".

Indeed. Jesus wept. This is why I let professionals do this work. I would probably burn every wire with the shaft of the soldering iron. 😂

Lyle, I hope the repair tab for this helps offset the booze to erase it from your memory. Can't wait to see how shiny you make this mess.

Those clip in square nut things are called captive "CAGE NUTS". I have a drawer full of those in SAE, imperial and metric sizes. New EU consumer electrical appliance codes require an HT fuse and even a heater fuse now. (rolling my eyes)

I can't say I've never melted a bit of insulation but nothing I've worked on looked like that was the prime purpose.

Aaarrggghhh! I saw the scraped dust and thought, 'That's not too bad,' then glimpsed the Sozos and thought, 'at least they're nice caps,' and then you flipped it over. 😵

First thing they taught us in the military, if you're not qualified to touch it, dont. I wish more people (looking at you guitarists) would consider taking this advice.

The better taste of a bad repair will make the finish restoration that much sweeter. I forget who said that, but it fits.

For anyone else this would be the stuff of nightmares. But for Lyle, it's as an archeologist and architect would say, "Just another day at the office"
@KKMcK12 жыл бұрын
You said it: FUGLY!!! I would want you to take that apart completely and start from the very beginning! This way the chassis could be brought back to near like-new condition, for starters. Take it completely apart and build it like new. The owner was absolutely right to send it to you!!! Do your thing!!!

At what point do you tell someone they’re better off having you start over with new boards and wiring? This must be pretty close.

Rough! I'm done with old amps like this. As much as I love them I'd rather start with newer stuff these days after having 1960s amp in the shop year after year. I'd run from this! I'm having a Blackface Deluxe handwired by a real pro with many decades of experience now.

At 8:12, a solder blob sitting on the chassis, just stuck there by rosin flux, waiting to vibrate free and get trapped by the terminals on a tube socket, where it can go "Zap"!

I don’t think there is any doubt the rework is substandard. Is there a chance that amp started as a kit assembled by an amateur?
@PsionicAudio2 жыл бұрын
No, it's very much the real abused thing.

Oof. I will admit that I have made some of these mistakes in my homebrews, especially WRT overheating insulation. But that's with amps that no one other than me will use, not a piece of history.

No Lyle - that was butchery. I’ve never seen anything like that. So many wires where the gorilla touched the iron or (shudder) gun to them. I’ve been working on tube circuits off and on since 1975. First system was an AN/SQS-23 G sonar set with 225 dB output power in the water. Output tubes the size of your head and cap banks with caps the size of trash cans. Never see anything in out out of the Navy that bad.

That amp had to be bleeding to death, judging by the abundance of cautery on the wiring.

I have Essential Tremor. My hands shake. But I love old amps and guitars and playing but I will NEVER try to service an amp cos I will F*** IT UP. I know I cant do something so I dont. I apply that to singing as well! All that burnt wire and solder blobs - no respect for the amps and the history. You need surgery? Know someone who says "Oh yeah I can have a whack at that" Its the same principle. Techs should be First Responders, not ambulances at the bottom of the cliff. Look forward to the videos and the treatment it deserves.

I am guessing the fuse was not added by the same "tech" that abused the amp. The person that added the fuse must have some amp knowledge. The sadist the made those horrible solder joints and incinerated the wire insulation, had no knowledge of amps surely.
@megadjc1922 жыл бұрын
Looks like someone was trying to use a solder gun or some other tool not meant for this kind of work. If I ever work on amps, it's more like precision surgery than the botched burnt cold solder mess in this thing... I feel for you, you have your work cut out for you on this one.
@scottwilcox63132 жыл бұрын
Wow what a turd, man you really got your work cut out for you. How do you even give an estimate for repairs when your doing a whole restoration. WTF some people should just leave shit alone. Maybe it won't be so bad. Only positive thoughts this year. Good luck Lyle

I have a black panel Super Reverb chassis that is the worst butcher job I’ve ever seen. From what I can guess the imbecile was attempting a Dumble mod. Imbecile is the kindest thing one could say about the person that did it. Drilled all sorts of holes, clearly had no idea how to solder and absolutely destroyed the amp. Not even sure what I’ll do with it. It might be parted out for the iron. I don’t know. Infuriating really.
