Only use the chokers to hook logs up. Using the mainline as a choker will ruin it. If you run that main line over rock if you use it like a choker it will start to fray it and will eventually break.

Melissa, I am glad you will feel better soon.. It too bad your ability to dance will be limited for a while. Your eyes dance beautifully. I hope you both enjoy the party and have a safe trip. Mike, your habit of estimating the weight of your logs is a great safety measure. You can then use a double line if necessary.. Using a chain choker may save wear on the load end of your cable. I hope all Morgans have the full Joy of the Season. They have added to mine for some time. God bless you all.

Okay, Mike. Melissa would mend much faster with some POOL THERAPY!🤣 Melissa's uncle is quite the craftsman. My Dad was a cabinetmaker so I know how it should look, but have never had the tools and work area to try my own hand at it. Maybe one of these days yet.

Furman Forrester I too love the woods, and as a boy and early teen I knew every acre of the 400-600 acres my Dads friends owned around us. There were woods, open fields and some neat deep gullies that we loved to explore. I would loved to have been a professional kid, but had to stop and grow up. I enjoyed the Mini-cabin series but never saw the episodes where it got finished. Last One was where you got the windows.

Pulling anything up high with a tractor is how people get hurt doing farm work. You run the risk of flipping the tractor over backwards. In your case, the Wallenstein itself may help prevent this because of how it’s designed and mounted on the tractor but I agree with those who recommended pulling as low as possible. Safety first! Really enjoy your videos, Mike!

Nathan is correct about elm’s interlocking grain. It’s a wonderful wood for doing woodworking and turning! I looked at a kiln schedule for drying it and found it to be rather easy to dry with some fallout due to deformation. With the strait logs you have, you might give both logs a shot on the mill. Just another opinion... Beautiful job on those windows! Wishing a quick recovery on her surgery. Must be driving her nuts not going to the gym and all her other activities. God bless her with a fast recovery. All Mike’s work with the skidding winch is interesting. More videos on those activities are always welcome. I assume the mill is out of service, sheltered right now. Would enjoy your thoughts on your plans with it. Housed in an enclosure like Nathan’s, or something else? ... All the questions you must get. But you deserve it with all the interesting things you do. Just amazing and appreciated that you share them with us. As always, what a great video, and have a Day y’all.

Mike, I have never seen a Red Elm until you showed us that one. I looked it up and it is commonly called “Slippery Elm”. The only Elms we have in my area of Southeast Michigan are American Elms, which have the “Dutch Elm Disease”. Because of the disease they all die after growing to about a foot or so in diameter. They used to grow to mammoth size. The Red may grow here but I have not seen one. I have heard it is used to make a “curative stomach remedy Tea” from people when I had stomach ulcers. I love to learn about new things. Thank You!

Mike I have split so many cords of red elm i can't begin to tell you how many. And with a axe . It splits easy .when it is frozen. When I was a kid it's what we sold most of for fire wood. When our customers would get some of it . They would request hole loads of it . Because it bunt slow and hot . It creates a nice bed of coals to. 😊😊👍👍👍🎅🤶🎅

Couldn't tell in the video for sure or not if already done, but I'd protect those super nice windows with at least a beade of caulk on the outside part between window pane and frame to seal... Awesome old lathe!... And definitely I agree fully Mike no wenching up high unless you want bent 3 point hitches or worse case scenario a tipped/turned over tractor.👍... Hope the healing goes well and speedy recovery Melissa.☺ Tell Hunter and kids I said "Hi!"

Nice to see Mike splitting with the maul. My preferred way. I can't believe that elm was splitting so well. We have a lot of elm trees in east Texas but my maul just bounces off them when I try to split them. Can't burn it for fear of getting my chimney on fire. Very hot when burning.

I've been a big time black powder shooter for close to forty five years. The Best patch lube I've ever found is machine soluable oil and Fantastic mixed 50/50. Makes cleanup a breeze. I've shot close to 100 shots at the range in one day and never had to scrub the barrel. You might try it. It really does work well.

I think it would be neat to see a episode on flintlock hunting shooting,I hunted with one on state game lands back in mid seventies,it started day after Christmas back then also.l harvested a couple of does in three years but they were a true trophy to me,nobody in woods, snow on ground, decent sowing going on, tracked them up, great memories for the mind candy..To top it off fresh back straps with home made hot peppers, garden fried potatoes and stewed tomatoes fresh out of quart jars,LIVING LARGE! To finish it off a Latrobe finest🙂

I have turned several elm bowls. Really pretty stuff but it does move a lot as it drys out. I actually turned the bowls green was happy that they did not split at all but they moved a ton. I left them that way since they actually moved in a way that made them look really cool. Good luck slabbing the tree out look forward to see how the slabs work out.

Hey Mike and Melissa, great video! Definitely do your video on the Flintlock loading and shooting, you could do one on cleaning them too. They brought us along the way to the firearms we use today. Hooray for Pennsylvania for keeping the tradition alive, It’s a lost art for so many! Those windows are awesome, he really did a great job with keeping the grain flowing, exceptional work. I do hope you both had a good time at the party at the NFL Hall Of Fame. Melissa we hope you follow the doctors orders for your foot to heal, when the feet hurts everything is shut down. Been fighting that problem for 58 years, I had 17 good years before it started 😁. Mike you are spot on with how you doing with the Wallenstein logging skidder and definitely right on about the remote. Your reaction time can get you in trouble real fast so better safe than sorry. You folks are doing a tremendous job around there. Thanks for sharing with us 👍👍.

That is a YES on the "Flinch Lock!" Windows - in like Flint, cool; the grain runs nicely together at corners. The winch has those chain hook points for multiple pulls instead of relying on winch. Tether them there after winching the log up to tractor, save the gears for work.....last longer I bet.
