Are you also playing with video titles and thumbs like Verisatium channel is? I think "Efficient on your travels? Think again!" or "Getting more for less?! Yes! It's possible" would be better than 65 tips.. 65tips sounds tiring to me, it would take so long to go through the whole video..

I'm big on finding restaurants that offer happy hour deals on food and drinks. Or going places at off hours to save. I also find buying things last minute often can end up being a steal on things like accommodations and event tickets. In the US I still use Groupon to save money as well. - Brandi

Great tips and resources. Another tip when booking accommodations is to look for hostels or hotels that offer a free breakfast. One tip you mentioned that I sort of disagree with is negotiating everything. When I'm in a local market, for instance, I usually just pay full price, or even gringo prices. The vendors are often quite poor, and I feel cheap and petty trying to save a buck by paying less than they ask for. Of course, you don't want to get ripped off, but if they are asking $4 for something, and you try to get it for $3, it just cheapens the experience a little. On the other hand, if you show kindness and generosity to a local, you might find yourself invited to their home for a dinner or fiesta.
@YogaBlissDance

I appreciate your comment Steve, I feel the same way. And as you said it's not about getting "ripped of" but knowing that $4 is a low price for the item on our world/life...
@robertwilliamson6121

Actually I find that they fully expect to haggle the price in night markets and street markets. It''s part of their culture. If something has a price sticker in a store, that's different. Pay the sticker price. But in night street markets or walking street markets, haggling the price is part of the social experience. They will ask two to three times the price they expect to finally sell the item at. It's fully expected. It's part of the "game". You both come to a price you agree on, and both are still happy. Or you don't agree, and part company. It's all part of those kind of markets. To top it off, not all travelers have a lot of money to throw around. If you are well monied and don't have to watch your budget...fine. Pay full price for everything and stay in four and five star hotels But many of us travelers and expats are living on a lot less, or living on pensions and are not loaded with cash. Like me. I always stay in fairy cheap accomodation. Like renting an apartment in Chiang Mai for $160 U.S. a month. Like renting an apartment for $100 U.S. a month in Siem Reap. Eat Khmer food at local mom and pop Cambodian tiny restaurants. A meal for 1.50 U.S. I never use the A/C... fans only to acclimate to the climate and cut my electric bill by a large amount. Haggle in the street markets..... they expect it. If you don't....then after you paid full price... they probably laugh and brag to their friends that they just sold something for full price to another foolish westerner.

@@robertwilliamson6121 I think all countries are different about haggling. We have been here in Mexico for almost a year now. Haggling here is not part of the culture. What we do find is that the vendors have great memories. They seem to remember us even the second time we go to them. If they have fruit that isn't the best, they won't sell it to us and they always either give us gratis things that they put in our bag or just give us a cheaper price when they realize we are steady customers and not just passing through. We have made great relationships with vendors but not through trying to get everything as cheaply as possible. Of course, that's assuming you will be in the area for a bit.
@robertwilliamson6121
@robertwilliamson6121 2 жыл бұрын
@@timothytibbits7942 You’re correct. Every country different. I’ve never been to Mexico. But in Southeast Asia, haggling/negotiating, is very much accepted, expected, and socially acceptable in street markets, such as the Night Markets and “Walking Street” markets. Haggling…negotiating price…is part of the culture, and is socially acceptable in specific situations such as purchasing a car, real estate, and flea markets, tourist night markets and once a week “walking street” markets etc. Haggling/Negotiating is not socially acceptable in commercialized businesses, such as pharmacies, commercialized businesses, restaurants, and western style supermarkets where prices are fixed and stickered and are not negotiable.

I so agree. Seeing farangs knocking down Thai street vendors is cringeworthy - just before they head back to their $150 a night accommodation.

Great tips, but a word of warning about ride sharing apps. Don't use them for anything important. A friend staying in Lisbon saved a lot of money by booking a flight out of Porto (3 hours away) but ended up missing it when her ride share didn't show up.

Solid list. I would add do the research before the departure. For instance the best way to travel in Tokyo and Japan is with JR Pass, which one can order for better price before entering Japan. Regarding grocery shopping in Japan, supermarkets discount gourmet food after 5 pm. Everything is freshly made the same day and needs to sell before closing.

Thanks for the organized travel tips/hacks. I certainly agree with #1 which I do whenever possible. I learned it a long time ago in NYC and then traveling around SE Asia they expected it and made it fun. Also, the other tip about traveling with people with a lower budget - by coincidence, in a few countries I met and ended up traveling around with people that apparently had a larger budget and wanted to pay for nearly everything when we were out.

Thank you for the tips! I'm a big fan of using reusable water bottles as I can usually just fill them up with tap water (assuming it is safe to drink where I am staying). Anytime I have gone somewhere international I have always done the travel insurance which you can purchase with the flight, but I definitely want to look into Safetywing for the next trip. One great tip you can do too to save money is to take advantage of the street food! Street food can be quite cheap and delicious at the same time! I remember going to Vienna three years ago, and I was able to get quite a bit of food for such a low price!

Great tips. When I traveled solo I used to budget more and stay in less expensive places than before. I also did budget tours geared towards younger folks like the GAdventures tours for 18 to 39. Now that I am older and have a husband, we do stay in nicer places and leverage points and miles rewards a lot. Thanks for the shout out to safety wings. I am looking for a good travel insurance for our honeymoon trip next year.

Another great video, thanks, Kristin :) In some places I usually stay with friends (for instance in Scotland, where I used to live) and family (including Costa Rica this summer marrying a local) for free and they have stayed at my place. Or staying in a cheap accommodation (e.g. sleeping in a hammock in Cambodia for $2 per night). This could also mean a place, which your friends there know and where they can negotiate for you. I also stayed in hostels in California or in a village. Eating Out where the locals eat, sometimes even street vendors...or taking a motorbike ride with a local.

Hi Ren, I use Skyroam, too but you don't necessarily need a local SIM. Do you have a plan or credits with them? I always bring an unlocked phone for a local sim like Telcel then use Skyroam as a back-up. Have a great trip to Tulum!

Good tip tho to find out if my old phone is "unlocked" or not - I may take it in to the sprint store to have them do that for me if I can't find a DIY option on Google.
