The ATV EXS-5 should be on this list. Amazing quality, components and sizes (13" snare and floor tom, 10" toms, 2 crashes and 1 ride cymbal). Trigger accuracy is perfect, and the optical 14" hi-hat is very sensitive and realistic. The module has everything you need, and is really easy to record yourself and play songs. Definitely the best for $2000.

I've had the Alesis Strike Pro SE since 2019 ( upgraded from an old Roland TDE-7T ), I absolutely love this kit. I am a heavy handed rock/metal drummer and have used this kit to record all of our releases. It was the sizes of the pads and kick that drew me towards it, the module having individual outputs for recording is what sold me. To mention the internal trigger changes from the old Strike Pro, they replaced the plastic plate with metal. never had any issues with the drums themselves. The only issue I ever had was 2 years in, was the ride bell trigger broke..again because i'm heavy handed and I was hitting on the ribbon and it broke. Sweetwater replaced it for me and now I just make sure I rotated where the ribbon is to not smash it. The hi-hat as he said in the video , if set up properly, there's no issues, with that said, I no longer use the hi-hat trigger that came with the SPSE, I went to a stationary hi hat set up using an older alesis hi-foot pedal. I didn't need the HH cymbal moving up and down on an e-kit. I have now expanded the kit to have 6 toms, 2 kicks, 2 hi hats, ride and 7 cymbals, with plenty of room for more expansion. ( purchased a second kick and module ) it also works flawlessly with Superior Drummer 3 ( SD3 sounds were used on our newest release, so all previous releases were the stock Alesis Kits).

I’ve owned 4 Roland kits and my favourite electronic kit for practice purposes is the Yamaha DTX6 silicone. It was relatively inexpensive and the sounds and sound shaping exceed my other kits in terms of practical usage. The big thing for me is the tracking of my playing accuracy. Nothing has done more for my chops than this feature. It’s like having a hard core teacher keeping me in line as it exposes all my weaknesses. For hybrid live playing it’s the Roland TM6. Killer module at a bargain price and the most unsung hero of the drumming world in my opinion.

I ended up with the Efnote 5. Great kit and I've started to expand it. I liked the white sparkle better than the dull black wrap and being mainly an acoustic drummer before this, it's been really nice having a more traditional set up than the edrum drum racks. I also found it to have some of the best most natural sounds that I've been able to try out in a store. I'm sure Roland competes just fine, especially in that price range, but everything I got to try in store was usually Alesis and Simmons, and I really didn't like the vast majority of drum sounds.

A little surprised to not see ATV on this list. I recently got the EXS 5SK and have been extremely happy with it. I did upgrade to the 18” ride and it really hit the value vs quality sweet spot for me. About $3000 for next to top of the line cymbals, a solid hi hat, large drum heads, sounds I really liked, and solid triggering was exactly what I was looking for. Module lacks a lot of features but for a first time edrum user the simplicity really works for me

Yeah, I'm guessing he docked points for the module. I have the EXS-3CY, and I love it. Granted, the drum sounds on the module aren't great, but it's an awesome kit for under $1600 regardless of the module sounds. Besides, buying a Roland synth with Supernatural or Zen-core drum sounds are fairly cheap these days, and it's pretty easy to connect the module to said synth via MIDI to get better sounds.

Great video Justin, but I'm going to have to disagree about the SD1250 module. I think you just don't quite understand what its strengths are. Having velocity to pitch and filter settings, Bluetooth MIDI, and a killer assortment of samples. You can build really awesome sounding kits in these things. The iOS app also makes it a cut above the competition. It is quite different as far as editing and creating kits though than Roland type modules, so it is a bit of a learning curve.

Yamaha DTX6K3-X is the best for a flat. I do not know why I need full sized drums at home. Yamaha DTX6K3-X is of reasonable size for a flat and the price is terrific! It is absolutely great through and through aaaand: it is super realistic due to the silicon pads! And it is also plug-n-play with superior drummer 3 (because there is a preset for it). And you have enough money over to buy superior drummer 3 (and maybe the decades expansion, which is so tasty and jazzey - god I love that expansion pack so much). I have it set up with a DTX --> MIDI --> Focusrite --> USB-Hub --> really old Dell Laptop --> Superior Drummer (sound files stored on external SSD). It is just endless fun! Before that I had Roland and Yamaha parts connected through an eDrummin to Superior Drummer. Was also great and unbeatable money wise.

I think for my needs, I’d probably get the efnote 7, get an extra 18” crash and call it a day. If I need an extra Tom later, I’d just pick up an used Roland tom. The reason for this over the 5x is because I noticed that the 14” snare on the 7 has 4 sensors, while the snare that comes with 3 and 5 only has 3, not sure if that makes a big difference or not.

Yamaha Stage Custom with foot blaster triggers. I unfortunately sold my TD-17KVX during the pandemic which then increased 25% in retail price. E-drums are too expensive for me at the moment. I paid $650 for my entire stage custom kit, I feel like Roland should keep this in mind more over their desire to squeeze every penny they can from patents and name recognition. You should be able to get td-17KVX quality for around $1000, because anything with a floating hi-hat is just a toy in my opinion. It teaches bad technique and looks goofy. I hope behringer starts making some sweet TD-clone sets soon :) Merry Christmas Justin, you rule and got me enthusiastic about my drumming journey years ago! I still follow for the good vibes.

I'm a later in life attorney who gigs from time to time. Money is really not much of an issue and, therefore, have been looking at higher end kits. I have a very nice DW acoustic kit, but was looking for something fun to practice on at home and maybe take on a gig or two. I wanted something that sets up and breaks down more quickly than my 7 piece acoustic with 7 drum mics that we run to my own snake and then to front of house. It takes a lot of time to get the sound right and was hoping for something quicker on the set up and take down. Thoughts on the TD50X series kits in the above comparison?

The crash cymbals are chokable, but you have to be very specific on how and where you choke them. The ride is only single zone and does not cut thru like every other part of the kit does. The module sucks (major larency issues trying to interface with my DAW), so I replaced it with a Roland TD17 module. Then I had to replace the hi hat cymbal and pedal with used Roland versions since the Simmons equipment would only do open or closed. I recently tried the kit out in a live setting in a brick-lined cafe. The Roland module made all the difference. Overall the band volume was more controlled and everyone said the kit sounded awesome! I had to use an acoustic ride since the Simmons ride sucks. My next purchases will be better cymbals all around. It looks like Lemon is the way for me to go in order to afford that. I would have just bought the whole TD17 kit in the first place, but it was always just out of my price range. Yeah, NOW THEY BRING THE PRICE DOWN. Oh well I am good with what I have now. I still have my acoustic kit though. Won't get rid of that!

Damn. In my country, a used roland td-15kv still sits at 1000 USD. Nevermind the td-17kv as a used one usually costs 1500 USD.

Sadly you dont talk about XDRUM. I habe an Xdrum DD 650. It cost about 750€, as a beginner the sounds are very likable and the Look is awesome. For me the Look & Feel is very important. Most other sets in this pricerange and above just look like Kid Toys. Even the 1000€+ Roland has just a pedal for the HiHat. Here you get a "real" highhat, 2 Zone Chrashes and a 3Zone Ride (all stopable) for a cheap price My set looks and feel like a serious instrument. You can do everything the instructor teach you. I love it!

Great update ❤ I bought a VAD506 with an additional FT and VH14D Hats for a great price and can't see updating this kit ever. Along with SDX Expansions our bands drum tracks sound awesome. Definitely agree that its Rolands best kit for an organic feel before things get too crazy pricewise. Excellent (very) long term investment.

I've bought an Efnote 5 about 3 weeks ago and so far i'm quite happy with it but I expected more. It could be my headphones but it just feels like some things don't work as good as I imagined. Though I won't sell it because i'm in love with the aesthetics and I'm pretty sure I can get more out if this badboy, so maybe people can help me? - The hi-hat open or closed is a big difference in volume and I wish I could kind of change it separately. - Also the hi-hat sometimes doesn't trigger well when I would hit it closed but then open it along the way. (Or should I recalibrate?) - Playing with music feels like sometimes the drumsounds get suppressed. - The snare doesn't sound like the way it should when I hit it. It feels underwhelmed. Soft. 8:53 You're talking about if I wanna play hard rock songs I should maybe use drum plug-ins. Can you do a video on this or tell me which drum plug-in would be a good one? Because I can't find any!

Hey Justin, thanks for your great videos! I was wondering if different brands of modules and pads are compatible. For instance, will efnote pads such as the hihat trigger just as well on a td27 module? Is there a video covering compatibility of modules and pads of different brands? Thanks!

Dayum those Efnote/Alesis kits are nice. I just want a kit that I can play at home that feels like a real kit and not a toy. Also never heard a module yet that impressed me.. it's all about those sweet plugins in my opinion so can remove that as a factor completely!

Do you think the Roland TD-17KV2 / TD-17KVX2 is worth the higher price for the new cymbols? I am looking for a durable e-drum which I will use to learn but also want to use it for Rock Band 4 with a MIDI adapter. I also bring all my RB4 equipment to partys where a lot of people play Rock Band 4 on a weekend. I have an modified ION Drum Rocker with Roland Mesh Snare / Toms for around 8 years now and never had to replace these.

I own the Yamaha DTX 8 kit and I love it. Not a fan of the hi-hats as I'm still trying to dial them in but overall, they play well with SD3 and EZD3. I just can't get the hi-hats to respond like real ones but I know that's the challenge with most e-kits. Maybe I should swap out the Yamaha ones for the Roland ones?

Currently playing a Alesis Crimson ll purchased 2 years ago. Bought electric set so wouldn’t piss off my neighbors with my original Gene Krupa Slingerland white marine peril set my parents got me in 1964. When I retired decided wanted to start playing again. Carpal tunnel limits me at couple tunes before numbness & pain sets in. Anyway, all the electronic sets’ cymbals are brutal on the wrist. Cut to the point of my comment, the snare drums I’ve played on different models are mushy at best. Was at Guitar Center here in Scottsdale Arizona the other day and jumped on a $1,000 Roland kit, don’t know which model. The snare had less stick response than my Alesis. Acoustic Drum kits are to Electronic kits as Veggie Burgers are to Burger King, McDonalds, & In-N-Burgers😂
