Eric E-Panda Hernandez is the drummer of all of Bruno Mars live shows. And like many live shows of this caliber, electronic drums feature heavily in his setup. We'll track his setups from 2011 through roughly 2020 to see how that aspect of his kit has evolved.

Corrections: 1: 7:37 that is actually a push to talk switch for his talk back mic 2: His throne was not an endorsement type deal, he paid for it

Eric does have Artist status at Porter & Davies and resulting Artist pricing, but yes indeed all P&D Artists do pay for their rigs as most of our customers are working pros anyway.

@6:58 what a gorgeous setup. Eric is a hell of a player and very deserving of this review. Great use of electronics and never over the top...just complementary. Both he and his brother Bruno are a great show to watch.

yuup, I really liked this video. My band is doing a Bruno Mars cover in a few weeks, and interesting to see that he even got rid of some big ass 20" crash/chinas that fucked with the frequency of Bronus voice.. Never heard about that before..?

Great Video! Fun Fact- the footswitch you point out at 7:37 is actually a momentary push to talk switch for his talk back mic. That particular model is custom built by Clair Brothers (the audio vendor for Bruno) and they have thousands of them in inventory. I hire Clair for all of my tours, so I see that box very frequently. The cable coming in on the left side is a male XLR cable from the mic, while the cable on the right side is a female XLR that will hit the split snake.

Great vid. Never knew the drummer was Bruno Mars big brother.. Interesting... I always thought and admired Bruno's drummer as one of the more discipline ones.. Not flashy and doing fills all over the place like many other drummers I know... 2 thumbs up.

I just started shopping piccolo snares about a month ago so it’s cool to know he’s also has interest in this particular drum. I play a totally different style and genre of music but the gear we use is all the same. I really like the attack from 14 x 3 piccolo it cuts right thru almost anything.

Man, I would kill for a Porter and Davies throne. For years and years I've played venues too small to mic up the drums, let alone have a drum wedge. Meanwhile, I have to wear earplugs since everything else onstage is amplified to the hilt. Time and time again I hear that the P & D throne puts you back in the action. Pricey? Yes. In need? Absolutely! And since I have AKG D-112s already built into my bass drums via the old school May system it'd be a no-brainer (I think!). Thanks for the great video.

He paid fully for the P&D as they don't do artist deals. The product speaks for it so much they can do this. It's a vital part when playing with in-ears.

Thank you, this is correct: At P&D we do not give anything away. If we gave our Artists free systems, we would have folded as a company years ago.

The Roland KT-10 does not get enough love in my opinion. I own two of them and use one as a dedicated kick pedal for "cocktail kit" kind of setup at small gigs. I get that some drummers have a preference to play their normal pedals like a DW9000 or whatnot hooked up to a KD-7, but really, the KT-10 offers so much for an all-in-one pedal! And it feels excellent under foot!

I haven't tried the kt-10, I'd like to tho. I use triggera Kriggs, they just clamp onto your bass drum pedal and wham you have a compact kick set up... I've also tried kat percussion Hatkat... I liked that too

Youre channel has really helped me with the edrum thing. I was a killer drummer already but i knew NOTHING of the electronic world. You rock. One of those one in a billion dudes I got myself a dm10 MK2 Pro, and I absolutely fucking love it and then I got myself a d-drum module or should I say interface it's not actually a module it's just an interface and I have my second kit which I've kind of hybrided together of drums I've built and gotten from a couple of friends and I am so balls deep into electronic drums it's ridiculous. So thank you.

Makes sense...because even on the Silk Sonic album, after like the 5th listen, you can start to tell the drums were not all acoustic. That album is definitely a blend of acoustic and electronic aspects. I can see Eric and Andersen.paak both using these techniques during the recording process.

Yeah, I used to use an octopad but ended up ditching it. I play keys and that's hard enough to play while drumming. I now just use a DTX 3 zone snare pad and a throw dial. I just preset them the way I want and away I go. The dial comes in handy as well, it's really easy to spin it off and play the sound I want.

Great and in depth..I have also been on that same path adding roland pads and piccolo snare. Also scaled down as well more like a jazz kit.. Simplicity practicing triplets overhand instead of pushpull cause of punk, jazz, rock,r&b Hiphop, and my fav drummer mitch mitchell. As a rapper producer Ive mainly been focused on mpcx but would like to play my kits out live thats the next level..like just blaze or something..

Very interesting video/article. I had a SPD-SX and ended up selling it as I also had difficulty sometimes aiming at those pads. This video reassures the value (for me) on getting a TM-6 Pro to add more inputs for percussion and 808 sounds to my TD-50 Kit. I like having more pads attached around my kit versus the 9 pad SPD-SX in one place I had before. I did tossed around the idea of having a Roland Octapad instead but it was same issue with the small pads, though I really like the loop function the octapad offers. Maybe I will just add Boss Loop pedal to the output of the TM-6 Pro for whenever I feel like I want to loop like a shaker or Tamborine....

The lights on the Alesis strike multipad are lifesaver in dark environments. The biggest issue with the SMP is reliability of Alesis gear, if you buy one buy brand new and get the extended warranty. Currently my SMP is having trouble freezing during start up. The SD card either has come loose or has a bad corrupted file. I have to take it apart and take out SD card maybe replace sd or reseat in card slot. Right now I kinda wish I had Spd-sx due to Roland long term reliability.

Real interesting, it happened me once live that somehow my bass drum pedal went straight through a 20 pinstripe and I didn't think it would ever happen cos I don't do metal. It wasn't fun using the floor tom cos I lost those hi hat options I always use. Now I want that Roland foot pedal, what a great option to have. I am a big fan of mixed cymbal brands. Choice is great and inspiring.

F' Sakes bruno... Ughhhhhhh .. When I hear he got the "look of death, why'd you miss that?" It pisses me off... Bruno should look at his brother and laugh and point, but not be mad.. This whole way of thinking is f'd... These are your friends and this case family, trying their best.. Pink has a line in one of her song "Why so serious?" I loved my band that when we would catch a member making a slip up, we'd laugh and point because we know they're talented enough to get it right, but if something happens, we're human, and we chose to laugh with it.. It's music, not the military Bruno/James Brown/Prince .. All the people I despise for treating other musicians/people like crap.. Such a let down when you like someone's music then you hear they do sh'' like that..

It's a different story with us amateur musicians who pay to play compared to musicians who are paid to play. Eric would fit in the sessionist side of musicians where you are REQUIRED to not fuck up. Like a live orchestra to a movie, or a live big band to something like American Idol/X-Factor. The musicians there are paid to play. Unlike us tiny musicians.

If I had to guess I would say working professional drummers from all genres get payed mainly to keep time. I would guess keeping time is 80% of their work and any other skills make up the last 20%. However, don't take it from me, go ask a working professional. I'm only basing my opinion on the hundreds to thousands of articles, clinics, interactions, etc. I've had with working drummers over the last 45 years or so. I'm 55 and started taking lessons when I was 10. My instructor was a true working professional that wore a suit to teach kids on Saturday mornings!
