In a world of deception, how can we accurately discern what is true, real, good, and right? I had the pleasure of consulting one of America’s sharpest modern intellectuals for guidance. James Lindsay delivers a working education of the psychological warfare that plagues our modern social and online environments. Drawing inspiration from his background in fields as disparate as martial arts and mathematics, James helps us identify and defend against the myriad ways psychological warfare permeates the culture around us. Tune in as James helps us find a roadmap on the journey to a free thinking society.
Dr. James Lindsay is an American-born author, mathematician, and professional troublemaker. Dr. Lindsay has written six books spanning a range of subjects including religion, the philosophy of science, and postmodern theory. He is a leading expert on Critical Race Theory, which leads him to reject it completely. He is the founder of New Discourses, a political commentator, mathematician, and conspiracy theorist.
In this episode, we mentioned several books including James’s co-authored work with Peter Boghossian, “How to Have Impossible Conversations: A Very Practical Guide.”, amzn.to/3OgkKCQ , and “The Marxification of Education: Paulo Freire's Critical Marxism and the Theft of Education,” amzn.to/3OaJigF . We also mentioned, “Art of War,” by Sun Tzu: amzn.to/43vwRQR . Each of these are available via these Amazon affiliate links or in my bookshop! www.sometherapist.com/bookshop
In our discussion, James also mentioned some of his recent podcast episodes on New Discourses including “This is How you Fight and Defeat the Woke”: • This is How We Fight a... and “How to Prevent Revolutions”: • How to Prevent Revolut...
Finally, I mentioned an educational podcast, Huberman Lab, that discusses the benefits of ice baths. Find “Using Deliberate Cold Exposure for Health and Performance,” here: • Using Deliberate Cold ...

YES. all correct! Merriam-Webster's definitions of demoralize : 1. to cause to turn aside or away from what is good or true or morally right : to corrupt the morals of 2a. to weaken the morale of 2b. to upset or destroy the normal functioning of 2c. to throw into disorder

This is such an important discussion. Thank you both. Psychological manipulation is widespread and has been for years. Remember Adam Curtis's documentary "The Power of Nightmares"? We can all learn a lot from James and his invaluable podcasts on New Discourses - for example how to survive struggle sessions. See also the new book: "Free Your Mind" by Laura Dodworth and Patrick Fagan for information and techniques for countering manipulation and persuasion.

1:01:10 I never realized how much what James just described as a struggle session actually is similar to the book of Job, where the accuser comes after Job and then his friends try to convince him that he is in the wrong. But Job will not agree to that which he is not guilty of. Job is learning how to discern his own heart rather than sell it as what others try to put in there or claim in there. God rewards Job for maintaining his integrity.

nice correlation! i really do think - in a fractal-based kind of way - that the Bible tells ALL the stories. The One Story. not too much to remember to do and not do - it's all there in that book. i don't remember a time when i was NOT going to Sunday School. i was happily soaking up everything laid out in the Congregational church my family attended and was completely immersed in - we were friends with ALL of the families who attended and did all the secular things (Labor Day BBQs, 4th of July celebrations et al) alongside the church events (Spaghetti Feeds, Pancake Breakfasts, Rummage Sales etc). i was not, however, a practicing Christian who at least went to church every Sunday as an adult. but damn it (haha) i never lost my faith nor my approach to living, especially in the way i value and treat others. i got hung up on the concept of "fractals" 'randomly' one day in the midst of a life-transforming separation and divorce that was quite dramatic and psychologically damaging. it stewed on the back burner for quite some time and, more recently - especially since exploring Dr Linds' podcasts and OnlySubs content, particularly beginning with his podcast on PRAXIS - i have come to think of "fractals" as The One Fractal. there is One shape, infinitely duplicated, at all angles in relation to each other, all colors and hues, solid and outlined etc - like a 3D+ landscape. the fabric of existence. One Fractal. and then with the help of Jordan Peterson's Biblical Studies, Jonathan Pageau's Symbolic World, and remembering all of my Congregational learnings and my Intellectual History education [i have a BA in it, with a minor in German and focus on Italian and French], i have began cross-applying these knowledge and skill sets and weaving them together. The Bible is the thread. so glad you commented with this! Job is often referred to, but rareIy is the Book of Job deeply explored past his life of struggle. i think he is one of the figures who answers the call to the Hero's Journey. it's not an adventure through foreign geographical terrain, dealing with strangers in a strange land, burning bushes, floods, and tablets from On High. his journey is through the world of personal strife. that's some kind of miracle to survive! ❤

i used to think they were interrupting - esp JBP. i realized it's the result of reaching a plateau of understanding sumultaneously, almost like completing each other's thoughts. because they are exploring in real time this plateau of understanding. they have reached via differing paths to this destination. be patient with them. some vibrate at higher RPMs, some are long-wave pulses, i guess. 😊😉❤

20:03 I had to pause a second to share my own observations on this. It’s an amazing aspect of hypocrisy. Janes is right, we are sensitive about hypocrisy… those of us who aren’t hypocrites, that is. You know who couldn’t care less about being called out on their hypocrisy? Hypocrites. Go ahead, try it. Never fails.

"a watched pot never boils" plus "the pot calling the kettle black" plus classic projection and diversion tactics, right??? i find often that 'nicknames' - and sometimes actual given names - either spot-on describe EXACTLY what the person is/does or the complete opposite. it's actually quite amusing when it's the latter. 😉 and when the former is so blatantly true, it's a side-stitcher! 😂

You need to do more reading on the human condition; they don’t care because EVERYONE is a hypocrite. It’s a part of life. They don’t care because you’re self righteous if you think you’re actually not a hypocrite. It’s like when people say they aren’t a liar because they don’t lie every day. They definitely lied before and there’s no magic line in the sand where if you haven’t lied in a week you’re not a liar. Not to mention you probably do these things without realizing.

Stephanie I concur with your observations about other therapists and how they can behave in ways that are incredibly political, aggressive, disrespectful and unprofessional! I’m often shocked that they have such little self awareness or ability to manage their own feelings yet they’ve achieved a qualification to practice!!!

A big theme in my life has been learning to recognize psychological warfare on an individual level. In fact, “psychological competition” might be a better term than “warfare” in this case, to avoid treating playground tactics the same as prisons and torture. A a kid I wasn’t mentally fast and hence an easy target for insults. For example, I’d freeze, blush, and believe the insult, and feel the intended shame. In a way, that seems to be the point of an insult: to sneak a negative belief about a person past their mental defenses and evoke shame. Perhaps an evolved behavior? And isn’t sneaking beliefs into others’ minds also at the heart of so much adult conflict? Ideologues, politicians, cult leaders, zealots, advertisers, salesmen, manipulators, gaslighters all essentially saying “believe this” (because it’ll benefit me).

James's young rattlesnake metaphor and his comments about coming into your power before coming into your ability to integrate and be responsible with the power had me thinking about those ideas in my life. I see these ideas at play with my spirituality. Coming into adolescence brings the power of the intellect but not wisdom. The young intellect looks around at the world that surrounds him or her and begins to pick apart the status quo. In terms of spirituality in my life that status quo would have been organized religion. I rejected and rebelled against the organized religion I was brought up in. Decades later I have the life experience and a more powerful and nuanced intellect that can examine Science's origin story of the entire cosmos and all the laws that govern it bursting out of nothing. Or the miracle of a single cell as complex as the city of Tokyo that has the ability to reproduce itself, spontaneously arising from prebiotic chemistry. Or the irreducibility of consciousness to matter. This knowledge in conjunction with personal life experience makes my previous rejection of spirituality look like hubris.

There are times where I have been going about my own business but I was open enough to what was not within my reality tunnel, as Robert Anton Wilson would put it. I noticed something significant calling to me and humble enough to pay attention to it and that's where I encountered "God".

I think psychological warfare is the correct term bc what Lindsay is describing is the catch 22 of the contemporary age
@derekww4844
@derekww4844 10 ай бұрын
Catch 22 only works on those who haven't worked on themselves and who only believe there're two ways of feeling either feeling good or bad when a third option is feeling of indifference. When one has a positive feeling about what's been said it's because deep down they know what's been said is true and consciously they also agree. When a person has a negative feeling about what's been said like being offended or hurt because deep down they know what's been said is true although consciously they don't want to accept it. What proves this is a saying that goes like this "when you point a finger at another theres three fingers pointing back at yourself so whatever the reason for pointing it has more to do with you. Those three fingers represent three options once one has found out what the truth they don't want to accept is to fix the issue and or second to accept it or keep pointing the finger. If one dies either the first to options or both they become better versions of themselves and when confronted with another saying what once brought about hurt it no longer a flicks them as deep down they know theres no truth to whats been said and consciously they also know theres no truth so now they are indifferent to wants been said.

So far, the part that stands out to me is the "orchestrated image of controlling perceptions" the part about "you were not wanted here, we chased you out of here," and how people were trucked in especially so it appeared the neighborhoood had more detractors than it really did. This is the 3rd or 4th time I've heard people say that protesters from out of the area were brought in for a protest AND that aspect I think should/could really be expanded on. I actually bought in partially to the idea that some neighbors made M4L "not welcomed."

I knew I was onto something with Stephanie's podcast - Lyndsay is a necessary guest, and coming on a show that doesn't have HUGE numbers shows true grit. He's based, but strategically. We really do have to be good shepherds in order to convince those who will listen; it looks too much like team sports just bashing everyone else over the head with the truth. They don't care about the truth; we're fighting an enemy that WANTS to believe certain narratives and lies - like 'we wuz kangs', 'beauty at any size', or 'whiteness is evil'. They've left copium behind - they're on copentanyl at this point. These lies stick because they are EVERYwhere, and without good people and information, we will ALL lose everything we've built. It's their country too - it seems like they can't realize that. The real epidemic is solipsism - we should stop putting our brains in everyone else's heads - it's just NOT THERE.

I've heard it described as they will only engage in an argument from a place of victimhood. This is the same philosophy taken by the critical social justice movement. This way, if the argument does not favor them, they play their victim card, and the argument becomes not about who is right or wrong about the issue, but who is the good person and the bad person within a greater meta-conflict.

''there are a lot of people who don't want to see themselves as so naive but it's important to recognize that we can be duped''. Naivety is not a virtue. Stephanie Winn is describing (at length) a predominantly middle class female psychological condition which is one of the reasons why women should not be on the boards of companies nor involved in politics. I don't know how much time and money my wife has wasted on crooked tradesmen just because she tends to believe everything they say, as 'experts', especially if they present themselves politely. My wife tends to give ME a hard time after they leave just because of my perceived 'unfriendliness' towards them just because I tend not to take them at face value and I ask tough questions.

People are starting to understand the gravity of the situation. But more attention should be paid to the conditions that lead people to engage in this mindf*ckery in the first place. Therapists, at least one's that are still sane and reasonable, have a place in sorting through and aiding to heal the damage that's been done. And above all, parents have to be parents, in order to prevent the conditions that make societal upheaval an attractive goal.

I disagree with both on how to deal with a struggle session. It needs to be emphasized that like everything with these people, a struggle session is based on false authority, in this case false moral authority. The only necessary response to these people is, "you're not an authority, I'll take it up with my God." End of discussion. You cannot rationalize with these people, it is a waste of time because it is based on a false construction.

Nota Bene! def 2a. so : 1. to cause to turn aside or away from what is good or true or morally right : to corrupt the morals of 2a. to weaken the morale of 2b. to upset or destroy the normal functioning of 2c. to throw into disorder

i appreciate what both of you do and this conversation was very interesting. my only real problem with what James is saying is that he seems to be ignoring the elephant in the room: the fascist element of what's happening. i don't think we're facing a communist takeover of the world, but rather we're already neck-deep in a corporate fascist takeover. i think that the communist/socialist activists/academics are simply being used by the corporations and uber-rich to finish the job they've been working on for decades. i mean, we can call this whatever anyone wants, but to suggest that the role of Gates, et al. isn't actually more important seems very short-sighted. the leftists were shrieking at us for being unvaccinated because the elite were telling them to do so. the trans nonsense and even BLM is coming from the top as much as the bottom. here in Canada, Trudeau appoints women to half of his cabinet _cuz patriarchy_ but then proceeds to take away actual rights from women. he's "supportive" of the alphabet soup mafia but then bans conversion therapy that will guarantee the transing of children who would've simply grown up to be gay. when the promised 2nd pandemic comes (that will kill children much more than adults, as per their simulation) it could get incredibly ugly. will people be killing their own neighbours who are unwilling to submit? where will the Moms for Liberty stand then? i really wanna be optimistic like James, but i'm apparently seeing/acknowledging a larger picture than he is. there's a massive corporate train barrelling down us and i have no idea how it could ever be stopped because they actually know what's happening and hold all the technological cards

The root for communism and fascism is the same. People have to understand this, because the way out from both is the original American style spirit of individual liberty, mixed with aspects of Christianity and it's like. You DON'T want to run from fascism/communism to another flavor of fascism/communism. That's what happened with Germany and some other countries, and they get caught in a never ending cycle of hell.

@@sirellyn Well said. That's why billionaire fascist corporations and communist wannabe-revolutionaries are fighting as allies -- they both want power and control over the rest of us who want freedom and individual liberty.

Dr Linds' addresses this OFTEN - it's a recurring theme! - in his New Discourses podcast. one of his main points lately is that these younger generations of activists WILL BE thrown under the bus. first against the wall, as they say. or Dr Linds' says "the first sent to the re-education camps". they are expendable. the thing is, about the 'corporate fascists' : they may seem confident in their plans for world domination, total control of all resources and necessities i.e. "the means of production". but they are NOT confident! Dr Linds' has read many a source document from WEF, UNESCO, and the like [see podcast!] and they APPEAR confident at first glance, but all of their citations refer to their own advertising-campaign-style publications, and there are very few of those as well! it's quite incestuous. and they make these definitive claims that, upon a closer look, completely lack substance. in their own publications and literature they outright say in plain English (whe you look past the smokescreen) that they have no idea how they will actually implement and achieve their aims. i was flippin scared and worried prior to listening to a few of these podcasts of his in which he READS the literature TO US (often times with a *.pdf etc link so we may read along). they speak and write in a coded language. it SOUNDS like regular talk, but it isn't. as soon as i was able to see "the secret image behind the picture" (like those of the mid to late 1990s where you stare at them for a few minutes until your eyes adjust/relax and allow you to see the image within the image) i am no longer afraid. i'm not overly confident, neither!, but I AM NOT scared of them. their master plan is crossing their fingers and hoping and praying (to the frickin devil or some ancient Thai daemon) that we're all gonna fall for it, go along with it, and never look past the green curtain to see them just hiding and waiting. seriously. they are Farce incarnate. the tragedy lies in the real world damage they conjure with their grift. sickening.

We need laws that ban punishment for therapists who use a variety of therapies to he!p people accept their sex and gender roles (which are incredibly versatile in today's world, deal with toxic family and peers and find healthy peers and school environments. It's terrible to outlaw gender affirming care without offering these people access to professional help to accept their bodies and gender.. Usually these clients have a plethora of co-morbidities and social problems. Churches can help to some degree, but many of these people need professional care, but therapists are restrained by "anti-conversion" laws.

A therapist told me that if she mentioned to a client that gender dysphoria sometimes resolved on its own (very true), that can be counted as “conversion therapy”.

The nice thing about religion is it can give a society a moral absolute. It's difficult to use some of these psychological tactics when the target does not answer to their peers, but rather is accountable to god, or some higher truth. It's kind of a positive (if the belief structure is good) fanaticism that is difficult to break. No doubt this is why communist regimes typically denounce religion and try to discredit it.

When the nazis were in power in Germany, it was the law that all nurses had to belong to a Professional nurse’s organization. Most nurses belonged to the organization of their religion (Lutheran nurses, Catholic nurses, etc). The government recruited nurses for the hospitals among the secular organizations, because it was easier to talk them into participating in euthanasia and abortions, but the religious nurses were extremely resistant.

All of what James describes in Philly is all too true. Philadelphia is in the throws of a narrative capture. As a long term Philadelphian, the waste and dysfunction are remarkable in spite of people who want better. The whole Kensington zombie thing for the world to see is an iceberg tip. Been going on for decades really. I cannot figure it out.

I think "demoralization" as "de-MORALE-ization" may be a misinterpretation of what the Marxists were doing. "De-MORALITY-ization" may be a better read. By eliminating the ability to tell what is true or real, you make everything subjective and prevent the ability to utilize a moral system. The elimination of that moral system allows subversion by totalitarian systems. This was both the expressed reason for and danger of the rejection of religion and normalization of atheistic, materialistic, and areligious beliefs.

All deception, calling it gaslighting or some version of persuasion, relies getting consent. This will always fail in time as the truth comes out and regret turns to anger. I have Ytube video series 'Myths in so-called Christianity' which there to persuade, however it is by open minded conversation not cohesion, as I found the truth but it is everyone's right to truth.

have you seen the film Gaslight? 1944, i believe. with Ingrid Berman and Charles Boyer. it was first a play. there was one previous film made. i have not seen that one, as i think the 1944 version is sooo geniusly played! it's also where the term originated. regarding the consent factor : i would have to agree, but with distinction -- it's a passive consent. and i would argue that because of it's passive nature, this consent is not actually given. it is taken and reigned in before it IS given. very slight distinction. and very good point! 😊

Hi Leonard! Just so you're aware, the inclusion of "conspiracy theorist" is a tongue- in-cheek reference to James calling himself a conspiracy theorist recently. We got James's explicit permission to include it here. James is a friend of the show and an accomplished academic force with a well researched and thought out perspective on the culture wars which is why we invited him on. I hope you find some solace being in on the joke! Thank you for tuning in. I hope you continue to do so!

James you’re a national treasure and a true warrior in many ways, no doubt. However all my bullshido senses tingle when you talk in more detail about your martial art. I truly hope I’m wrong and whatever you practice is legitimate. But make no mistake: there is no secret ultra powerful technique in Chinese martial arts or otherwise that comes anywhere near mastered disciplines such as boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing, wrestling, judo, BJJ, etc. Professional MMA has separated the wheat from the chaff when it comes to the faux mysticism that once surrounded martial arts back in the king-fu movie, secret dojo, and pre-internet days. If your art is so powerful we’d see literal domination in pro circles utilizing it. Soooo, idk..
