What I absolutely loved about Portnoy's cover is that he didn't have the kit (or time lol) to really recreate what Danny did during the whole breakdown / bridge phase, but he came up with something that was both close and made it his own. And maybe in some context someone could read that as a bit of a slight, but it's nothing short of incredible what he did in just a few hours.

I haven't learned this song but for what I understood, the main riff is 33/8 (hence the 33 on his jersey) split in measures of 6/8 and 5/8. The whole song plays with sections of 3 and polyrhythms in 3. Portnoy had to record it in parts because he couldn't do it in one take. That's how complicated this song is. He did an amazing job.
@cedricyoung4974

@@thornecroft3509 it counts easier as 33/8 imo but I'm also not a drummer. The song is so annoying to count how it's written on the sheet music that I just tell people to count it however they see fit. I actually believe that how these are set up is that the drummer who is playing in the video has no knowledge of how the drums should be played for the song. So they listen to the song and put their own beat on the track. So everything he's playing here is his own playing. Just his interpretation of how to play the song if he played for Tool instead of Dream Theater

@@user-jp1hs6sl3h Most of Drumeo's videos are in that format, but in this Portnoy was explicitly allowed the freedom to listen to the track (with drums), read the transcription, and watch a playthrough as much as he wanted. Pneuma has a strange time signature that once Mike thought he'd found the sequence he had a lot more success, treating it as comninations of bars of 6's & 5's but the order of the bar counts over the length of the piece evolve as it continues, hence we have one of the hardest drum tracks to replicate, but in the time he had, Mike killed it. I guess for a pro covering this piece at a moments notice is NO Biggie .Mike does a great job. Now we get to the master. Danny kills in this video, no prisoners! He does so well and is SO relaxed and calm! You'll see. For Danny this first section is his warm up. O. K. Sammus we are almost to my favorite part. Danny says I'll show you something NOW -- beginning at 18:49!!!!!!!! You said is he getting faster? He is launching into the brain melting part!!!! I LOVE it................ Was that good for YOU? I'm exhausted............ They both did really well. Danny is a wizard!!!!

11:45 Yeah, he did that for an extra mandala pad on his left. He said the main challenge was to find a remote that had the same feel as a direct hi hat pedal.

This really messes with the internal metronome!! Great vid! I'd love you to see you react to some of the Top Secret Drum Corps stuff. Very different but it's some precision drumming!

Great choice of video comparisons - I love it. You should make this a series. Joey vs Jay vs Eloy The Rev vs Mike vs Brooks There are others, but I’m sure you get the idea.

saw the video on drumeo when it came out, also the original drum by Danny carey with excellent quality and Id'say Mike is doing an awesome job mastering this very difficult song, the time are weird, it's long and has very complexe fills, he nailed pretty much everything

I love what Mike did there. He’s a monster and it’s nothing short of incredible. And I find it so amazing that he’s down to having the whole struggle filmed. Also when comparing the thing is that Danny plays the song differently than it’s on the album. The 4 on the floor on the Hi Hat for example.

The sustain and sound is tightly connected to the thickness of the shells. He talks about it in his video with Rick Beato.

Dude, you HAVE to watch him learning it, and all the takes it took. It's fuckin HILARIOUS! Dude is cussing Danny the whole time "in a loving way of course lol" he's cussing the drumeo guys for making him do this song, he's getting his ass kicked, and having a ball doing it lmao.

Portnoy is Portnoy, right, but Danny Carey has a unique way to play the drums of this song. Those strokes between the cymbals and drums and the crescendo, the impact is almost like an logarythmic function, every beat has an ease to it, a modulation, that is much more pronounced in the later's way of playing.

I mean to be fair Portnoy had a day with this song. Danny wrote it probably over months, refined it and also drew from decades of playing this feel he pioneered in Tool.

Rytm is one thing but bringing musicality into drumming is an artform on its own and Danny is in the top leage (if not the master). Mike being able to reproduce this for the most part is amazing💪
