Overview and install of the Rade Garage small air box and storage kit on my 2021 KTM 690 SMC-R.
I wish I had done this first. Would have made the install of the Wings Exhaust and Power Commander much simpler.

The SAS delete removes the pair valve which injects air in the exhaust stroke for emissions like an egr. It helps more than you know for cooling exhaust when deleted.

I have a touring bike as well which I use for longer rides, so didn't feel I needed the tank. The storage is super handy. I hate riding with a backpack and the storage is pretty big. Water bottle, wallet, rain shell and some snacks. I can also through a few small pieces of camera gear in there. I am happy with the storage.

Great video! I’m stuck between getting the Rade intake or the Rottweiler intake. Both offer extra storage solutions. Any recommendations?
@CTPSupermoto
@CTPSupermoto 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on how much you will use the storage. The Rottweiler adds a soft bag whereas the Rade is a hard shell which is much larger. I put camera gear in mine so like the added protection. Both companies in my experience are great. The Rottweiler intake is a work of art. So if that’s important to you might be the way to go.
@geneshaw1234

I have the Rottweiler on my Super Duke and Rade Garage on my 690. From my experience Rottweiler is a more premium solution with more responsive support. Support questions sent Rottweiler are answer the same business day. Rade Garage is much slower in getting back to you. However the Rade Garage setup you get more storage space and easier filter cleaning. At the end of the day both are great options so you can't really make a wrong decision.

How did the bike sound with rade intake over stock? Any better throttle response? Thanks!
@CTPSupermoto
@CTPSupermoto 2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t notice any difference to the sound. Although I added the wings exhaust first and it’s pretty loud so that may drown out any sound improvement. Performance gains after the rade intake were noticeable but not dramatic. Wings + PCV was a huge jump in power (based on feel).

Hey man, I know you posted a while back but still hoping to get a response.. thanks a lot in advance!! I am torn on this step, I have a 701 enduro from 2020 (EURO4) with an Akrapovic slip on. It has been like this from day 1 (first owner bought it, put the exhaust, sold it to me after 1000km). No issues for now but I don't have much power down low, just my perception I probably need to test another 701. I just mounted a rotweiler fuel dongle and di not notice any increase in power or torque. Do you think it is safe to but this airbox to my bike? Do I need a power commander or dyno? Thanks a lot, G
@CTPSupermoto

@CTPSupermoto
@CTPSupermoto 3 жыл бұрын
Power is way up after the mods - exhaust and intake. As far as sand/dirt - do you mean getting into the engine? If so, that shouldn’t be a problem. I have run twin air filters on other bikes with no problem. If you mean performance in the sand/dirt - I only ride the SMC R on the street. Thanks for watching.

This is great info. Is there a con to removing the SAS canister? You also had to include a fuel dongle with the power commander right? Thanks
@CTPSupermoto
@CTPSupermoto 2 жыл бұрын
I suppose there might be some marginal environmental impacts of removing the sas canister. From my understanding there is no real benefit other than asthetics either. Yes - fuel dongle is required to ensure the closed loop system doesn’t return the power commander values back to stock. I purchased my PCV from Rottweiler and they include the dongle for free. Others have commented that this system will not work on the European models. Although I can’t confirm that.

What made you go with the Rade Garage air box over the Rottweiler air box? I am trying to decide myself. The lower price and extra space that you get with Rade is very nice. However the Rottweiler seems a bit nicer made product. I also have experience with the Rottweiler as I have it on my other bike. Does the Twin Air Filters come pre oiled and ready to go or is there prep involved like the Rottweiler? Thanks!
@CTPSupermoto
@CTPSupermoto 2 жыл бұрын
It was a tough call. The rottweiler piece looks amazing! The Rade garage could almost be stock with the way its put together - but its under the seat anyway. I wanted the storage space and the cheaper price sold me. The twin air filters are also much more common (cheaper) for replacement. The Twin Air filters are pre-oiled and the kit comes with two. The are washable and once washed would be the same process as the rottweiler filter. The oiling process is easy - just wear gloves.

Just a follow up I finally got my 2022 690 in (US Spec) and went with the Rade Garage Air Intake. Just did the install and it is different than what is shown here. The setup now uses a different Twin Air filter with a rubber plug in the middle of the filter. There is a metal internal frame that you put inside of the filter and then a big screw pinches the filter down on to the air box. I am guessing this is an update to their design. The instructions haven't been updated so I reached out to them to make sure I got the correct kit.
@CTPSupermoto
@CTPSupermoto 2 жыл бұрын
Thats interesting. I found that the storage box didn't quite line up with the frame on mine. Not a big issue, but wonder if the kit I received was for the previous model. I also asked them about that and they said mine was the correct kit...

Thanks for the video! Your bike looks great. All that EZ access extra storage post airbox removal is sweet indeed. Bonus, you can have warmed by the engine heat lunches trailside if you wrap a sammich in tin foil in there! For those with the stock airbox, pulling the battery and putting a little Windex on the boot makes re-installing it much easier, to the point where is only a 3.5 out of 10 on my personal logarithmic pain in the ass scale. It is more than worth the nominal extra effort to pull the battery, as you are right, putting the stock airbox back in is otherwise a nightmare with the battery in the way. How is the intake noise with the airbox mod when under throttle? That is what I am most concerned about. Have owned bikes with airbox deletes in the past and didn't like the "bicycle card in the spokes" intake honk they made under throttle. Currently have a '10 slant engine Husaberg FE 450 which has a similar no airbox setup from the factory, it can be pretty annoying intake sound wise at lower RPM with some throttle to it, but once it is revved and on the cam, the intake sound is pretty glorious too. The other concern I have with the airbox replacement mod is removing the airbox's ability to isolate the intake stream from really hot air coming off the engine and radiator under slow trail riding conditions as I also have an Enduro and it sees slow tuff sstuff single track type riding off road use at times - I ride it like a dirt bike and sometimes forget it weighs well over 300 pounds. Currently running a Yosh can, and like you also the Rottweiler fueling dongle/SAS & cannister eliminators. Running a twin air oiled foam panel filter in the stock airbox. The other "engine mod" is a KTM 80/85C (185F) fan thermo switch, I highly recommend that as the stock switch comes on at 102C (215F) which is just stupid hot. AOMC has the lower temp fan switch. The charging system is robust and running the fan more is not an issue. As luck would have it, my Rottweiler mapped Power Commander is in the mail as I write this 😁 Have run PCs or had ECU flashes in past machines and always enjoyed the results. Will consider the airbox mod, but I want to see how she runs with the PC mapped for the stock airbox and can configuration. It sure sounds great with the can on it, and even without the PC optimization (the fueling dongle O2 sensor eliminator richens it up and really helps part throttle response) the bike already has loads of power. The extra storage sure looks nice though...

Im looking at getting a 690 in the next couple months. I really like the idea of extra storage. What scares me is hooking the laptop up for I guess mapping. If I just did the airbox and a slipon, is the computor maping required? (I suck at anything todo with a computor)Thanks
@CTPSupermoto
@CTPSupermoto 2 жыл бұрын
Slipon is usually ok without fuel management, but opening the airbox you will need to. If you purchase the slipon and a power commander from Rottweiler Performance they will load a suitable map on it for you for free. So get your aribox from Rade, and rest from Rottweiler. I have no affiliation with them, but have been really impressed with their service. Or - you get get a dyno shop to tune it for you (best option but more expensive). Or - ask a friend to help you out.

I ended up buying the storage compartment for my KTM 690 SMC R 2019. I just got it and have taken apart my bike to get it fitted in. When I took the OEM airbox out I noticed it has two air hoses coming out. I see it has included the hose for the left side of the bike but there is also a hose coming out of the right side of the bike from the airbox. I do not see instructions on what to do with this hose for the right side. Also, the new airbox I was sent has a cage that I need to assemble myself and I'm having a hard time putting it together. I run an Arrow race exhaust and fuel dongle and stock airbox. It has plenty of power in mod2 with abs and tc off. It’s funny how KtM has a lot of money in R&D yet people think they no better with lil to no R&D. Buy a SuperDuke if you need more power. More $ than cents comes to mind.
@4sstylz
@4sstylz Жыл бұрын
You're comparing two different ECU. They work differently, that's a nonsense. Yes KTM do a lot of R&D… to be able to register their engine with the EURO5 label and pass emissions tests. That's why the bike run poor on a big part of the curve. Especially on open loop when the lambda is used (idling, low RPM, and same speed for a long time). The LC4 have now less performance than the 2016 version because of this. It's not to get some additionnal 5hp that people chose to map their LC4, but just to get a better curve, and it's very important to maximize the mid revs torque. If you're happy with the actual level of performance of your engine, then don't change anything. But people love to be able to have more torque to pop wheelies with higher gears.

With my riding style on the SMC-R I don't foresee issues (knock on wood). I ride it predominantly in fair weather and given the easy access will be cleaning and oiling regularly. It's a very fair point though and should be considered by anyone going with this setup. Thanks for watching and your comment.
