How Queen Anne of Great Britain Looked in Real Life. I recreate her portraits to see how this English Queen might have looked back in the day. Queen Anne of Great Britain (1665-1714) was overweight and according to everyone, not a great beauty. She was sickly all her life and survived smallpox.
Her father was King James II of England. Her great grandfather founded the Stuart reign in England as King James VI and I. Queen Anne was the last Stuart monarch to rule England. With no Protestant heirs, the throne then passed onto her great aunt's side, whose male line began the Georgian Era with King George I.

I think Anne is a very underrated British monarch. She provided some badly needed political and social stability that helped England prosper. She also helped get the Union between England and Scotland across the finish line. To do this while going through unimaginable personal tragedy just goes to show what a strong woman she was. May she continue to rest with the angels.

It was also an era that did not have the so-called "miracle drugs" (antibiotics) Infant and maternal death rates were very high Back then (no matter one's wealth) only one of every four people born, survived to adulthood.

Don't forget that a great deal that is known about Queen Anne was written by her enemy, Sarah Churchill. Sarah Churchill was originally a favorite having lived in the same household when Anne was a child of six. Sarah Churchill was very rude to Queen Anne which made the queen get rid of her. Sarah Churchil wrote the memoirs of Queen Anne and she didn't write anything to the Queen's advantage.

Poor Anne... hard life, even for the royals, back then. Thanks for another great peek into history!
@BeckBeckGo
@BeckBeckGo Жыл бұрын
I think life has always been difficult for royals. Today, it's probably a bit better for them, but historically, sure, you're well fed, housed, and clothed, but you're also highly likely to be beheaded by this rival or that, blamed for war, be the cause of a war, demanded to produce sons, denied a normal healthy childhood, always wear uncomfortable clothing, I mean the list is just neverending. One of my favourite book series is the Gormenghast Trilogy, and it chronicles the most recent generation of a fictitious royal family. And one theme that winds its way through this weird, twisted series is the amount of tradition, most of it nonsense, that has to be strictly adhered to every day, and is so abundant and time-consuming, it's pretty much the only thing members of the royal family have time to do in a day. And sure, it's a very bloated, warped, and bizarre portrait of royal traditional activities, but it really does illustrate just how much time these poor people were required to waste in order to honour the Family and the House. I really felt sorry for royals after reading these books.

Miscarrying 16/17 times is not normal. I’m inclined to think she had some degree of fertility issues (Ovarian cysts, PCOS, endometriosis, predisposition to ectopic pregnancy, or else undiagnosed cervical/uterine cancer). The fact her only surviving child also passed away _as a child_ indicates she passed on her poor health to her children. I usually have little sympathy for royals but nobody should have to suffer that much loss, especially not their own babies. Heartbreaking.

I was thinking that,too. In some of her portraits,you can see that she had hormonal imbalance. The shape of her face,the flushing. She had childhood arthritis,among other things. She doesn't look like an ugly lady to me by those recreations. I think she would have been pretty if she were thinner and her skin was more clear, being pregnant seventeen times and seeing all her children die before her, wouldn't have been great for her health or looks, her giving up on life, locking herself away and indulging on food from all those tragedies is understandable to me. If only they had the skincare treatments we have today back in her times. Also I think her critics bashed her too harshly they likely over exaggerated her negative traits, not understanding she had a difficult life.

I have great sympathy for poor Anne.Her life was so sad.In fact none of the Stuart's really had much luck.To lose all those children must've broken her heart & Sarah Churchill whom she loved dearly,was a fair weather friend out for what she could get.Are there any portraits of her son,the one who managed to make 11?Surely it's a strong possibility that Prince George may have contributed to the fact there were so many miscarriages & early deaths among the children?He was definitely overweight with all the problems that can cause.

Prince George was overweight and that contributed to Anne’s miscarriages? What?

Yes, there are a few portraits of Queen Anne with her young son Prince William, Duke of Gloucester. He was a very sweet faced little boy. It's sad that he died so young.

Ah, she had lupus. That explains her weight to some extent. Lupus causes depression and makes loosing weight difficult. Being heavy and depression makes lupus worse. Depression makes loosing weight difficult. I have run myself down keeping my weight where it needs to be and keep muscle on. It is well worth it but difficult. I couldn't imagine a spoiled British royal putting that kind of work into anything tho.

Seventeen pregnancies, and in an era where physical exertion was frowned upon for women...I don't think she had much chance of gaining muscle or physical fitness. And yeah, chronic diseases suck.

This is honestly heartbreaking. Losing 16 babies and a child - the toll all those pregnancies must have taken on her body, the hormonal chaos, the unimaginable grief. Nothing to help her with the depression. The feeling of being physically broken, not good enough. And people judge her for being overweight, just wow.

I'm 55 now and life has taught me that beauty works from the inside out. I've met plenty of women that at first appearance were not "great beauties" but the more you get to know them, the more beautiful they become. The reverse is also true. I've met gorgeous women who's beauty disappeared the moment they opened their mouths.

There’s a consensus among medical historians who analyzed the records of her illnesses that she suffered from lupus and an associated disorder that many with lupus also have called antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) which caused the miscarriages, stillbirths and mortality of the one living child. You can clearly see the “classic” butterfly rash in many portraits Lupus is a complex and until fairly recently a debilitating, painful and often fatal disease-it’s astounding that she lived as long and accomplished as much as she did.

I subscribed. It's so amazing to see these historical figures brought to life! What a very hard toll. 17 pregnancies, no children, bad genetics and I'm sure the hot chocolate she loved was loaded with sugar making things worse. Looking forward to seeing others come to life. Really amazing!

Because she wasn't "beautiful" or bombastic she's been ignored. That's a shame as she really worked hard to bring her Country together, despite poor health. The insults hurled at her were disrespectful and uncalled for. She did have a supportive husband and a good friend. It was enough to keep her strong. Admirable woman who deserves more attention for her accomplishments. It had to have been a hard life full of losses.

Actually she lived kinda long if she had Lupus, and 17 pregnancies, overweight. If she had Lupus she may of had debilitating arthritis, causing her to be unable to walk very far. Add in the weight of the clothing, poisonous makeup ingredients, and maybe she had high blood pressure. It would be no wonder that she felt unwell for the bulk of her life. Add the duties of queen, no real friends, and all 17 children dying, the depression had to be very crippling.
