If you remove it completely it will overheat since the fluid will return to the transmission and not going through the cooler itself. Some later models have an aluminum plug with a stem to do exactly what Flippin the valve will do.

I did and have done so two times since. Works fine……BUT…..Superior does sell a valve that’s a little more “professional” if you will. May use it on the next if I can get it. Two of these I have built have gone in the newer Transit vans. Not fun or simple to get the pan off (or the trans in/out either). I think the bypass is definitely the way to go on them. I would know by now if it had been a problem.
