Kansas City Royals 5 at New York Yankees 4 F -- When the Royals visited Yankee Stadium in late July of 1983, everyone assumed that the Independence Day celebrations were over. However, George Brett provided some fireworks of his own with a controversial game-winning home run off of Yankee closer Goose Gossage. When home plate umpire Tim McClelland declared Brett out due to an excessive amount of pine tar on his bat, the Royals superstar flipped his lid and ignited a brouhaha that took nearly a month to settle. When the dust cleared, Brett's home run was allowed, although it wasn't until August that the two teams could finally complete the contest and make the "Pine Tar Game" part of history.

He'd said in an interview that he didn't remember charging out until someone showed him the video tape. He'd also praised Goose Gossage in this interview as being "one of the all time greats."

Awesome! Never been there, but a fellow I know in my hometown made a model of old Yankee Stadium (pre-renno look) and brought it with him to The Bronx when he saw the Yankees for the first time there. The office staff was so impressed with it, they offered a trade: his model for two game used Yankee uniform tops. I've seen them and as far as I know, they're still hanging proudly on display in his basement. I'm a Twins fan, but I'm impressed by how the Yankees treated my friend. With respect.

What's interesting is that George Brett has since contended that the Pine Tar Incident was a blessing in disguise because before that, he was constantly being clowned on for getting hemorrhoids during the 1980 World Series. Still, I do find it a bit ironic that probably the most defining moment in the career of undoubtedly the greatest or most iconic player in Kansas City Royals history is him running out of the dugout at Yankee Stadium like a maniac to confront the umpires.

You're right. We were also at the game on the third row of the top deck directly behind home plate. We were bewildered as to what was happening. All of a sudden, the PA started playing "New York, New York", and the security guards came onto the field. We could only speculate that it had to do with a corked bat. It wasn't until we turned on the car radio that we found out.

According to the book, "The Baseball Hall of Shame", Billy Martin knew weeks before the game that Brett used too much pine tar, but he waited for the right time to tell the umpires. So after Brett hit the homer, that was when Martin sprung into action, and as the saying goes, "All hell broke loose".

@@jakejp74 From what I understand, the primary reason the rule about excessive pine tar was put in place had to do with the pine tar causing baseballs to get scuffed up and they therefore had to be taken out of play sooner. AL President Lee McPhail felt that Brett was entitled to the home run because the pine tar didn't help the ball "go beyond the fence."

I think that Graig Nettles had already put it in Billy Martin's head the idea that George Brett was using too much pine tar on his bat. Because I think that Nettles was playing in the game while as a member of the Minnesota Twins where Thurman Munson was was called it for doing that.

For us Royals fans we Thank God this happened and Brett even got his home run back. For the most part this ended the KC vs. Yankees rivalry that started back in 76..for the most part we went out on a winning note but those Yankees were almost impossible to beat so many great players!

Yeah - makes you nostalgic for the days when the game moved at a somewhat more brisk pace between pitches. The games are on average about a half an hour longer now than they were then, and a lot of its due to all the little fidgety routines the pitchers and hitters pull on the mound or in the box.

I watched the whole game on TV. I was 13 then. When George Brett charged out, I was thinking, "I'm glad I'm not in Yankee Stadium right now." It was scary watching him. In a fairly recent interview, George said that he didn't even remember charging out like that until someone showed him the video replay.

The rule was not to call him out. The rule only stated that the illegal bat be removed from the game for a substance being too high on the barrel. THAT'S why the home run was later upheld.

I have always been fascinated by this game. Even now, only 30 years later it still generates some controversy. Talk about saving the best for last! Interesting that the Royals protested the game to the AL, the result noted here where the Yankees win was overturned, the home run allowed and the game was completed to the end a few weeks later with the Royals winning 5-4. One of the commentators pretty much implied that when you come out to a ball game, you never know what you will see. He was absolutely right - and this game is a perfect example.
@fuckyougoogleplus8667
@fuckyougoogleplus8667 8 жыл бұрын
+gcbrown1956 There is no controversy to anyone with a brain. The umpires on the field called it wrong, Plain and simple. Not only was it widely known that the rule was not to be enforced anymore (even Billy Martin knew it) but even when it WAS still enforced (to save baseballs) it NEVER called for the batter to be called out. The only thing that happened was the ball was taken out of play and the game continued. So any way you look at it, the home run should have stood.

Just finished few hours watching the bash brothers Oaklands late 80s heyday.. Conseco and Mguire were some kinda a site to see bat in that era. Wow. Absolutely staggering batspeed and homerun power. I was 13 when I watched the pre-Pine Tar Game on TV. When Goose Gossage came on to pitch to George Brett at the top ot the 9th, I thought as Frank Messer said, "This will be a challenge." When Brett hit the foul ball, I thought, "He's going for it;" then "Uh oh! Uh oh!" I was glad I was about 10 miles from Yankee Stadium when Brett charged out of the dugout yet I'd thought he had a legimate gripe--how did pine tar affect the ball's traveling? Who'd have thought this was baseball history in the making?
