I can attest to this as being true. I had a 2008 Sequoia with the 5.7L towing 7k trailer but loaded full of family (and dog) - through Utah/Wyoming rockies. It behaved much like this. That 7.3L is incredible that it can do this given the gearing etc. The only thing that likely would slow it down would be a tall travel trailer (likely lighter for sure) but with added wind resistance (which changes things big time), but you could easily just get the steeper gears and likely would help mitigate that issue...

My colorado 3.6l pulled about 3,700lbs from Vegas to Salt Lake City and back. On the way back I was floored at ~5krpm barely holding 60mph. I can just imagine this big 7.3 probably wouldn't have changed the shift pattern 😅😅

Hi there from the Western Slope of CO! Thank you very much for sharing your towing experience with the 7.3l gasser! I am really glad to see it is doing well for you. I have one on order with the 4.30 gears. We have a 26 ft travel trailer coming and I didn't want to do a marginal tow experience with the 1/2 and 3/4 ton series. I also didn't want to spend the $$ for the diesel option. I did have a 1ton ram diesel a few years ago. Wished I still had it, but this gasser should serve well. Safe travels!

Thanks for a great video! You’re right about diesels and all the emissions nonsense! You have convinced me whenever my 06 Cummins dies a 7.3 gas will replace it. If you do the math based on the cost of diesel vs gas and the mpg differences the cost per mile is not that different. That doesn’t even take in account the diesel engine purchase price, extra maintenance costs and DEF fluid. Unless you really really need a diesel, nowadays it’s just not worth the huge expense.

You hit the nail on the head, the 7.3 is not comparable to any recent gas motor offered in an HD truck, I'd go even further, paired with the 4.30 and the 10 speed, it's in a class of it's own for a gas truck. It'd be interesting to see that same pull in a 6.0 Powerstroke, wouldn't be surprised to see the 7.3 outrun a stock 6.0. You're pulling about double what the average guy using pulling a TT or 5th wheel will be doing, IMO, the 7.3 is an excellent choice for most truck buyers out there. Thanks for the video

I agree totally. Not a giant Ford fan really...BUT this truck seems like the IDEAL option for people who wanna tow, and tow quite heavy. BUT also want a reliable (to be determined...but it's a gas engine so...) not all that garbage emmisions and DPF poo. The power from it, the gears and the trans (with the awesome tuning that was done to it) and the thing just does. I'd love to drive one and see how it is, but they seem like a pretty darn good truck.

You're CORRECT......the Ford 7.3L gas with 10R140G and 4.30 gears is in a class of its own! Compare the 7.3L gas engine to the 6.0L diesel engine? I just sold a VERY NICE 2006 F350 CC Lariat 6.0L 4WD SRW 172 truck that had virtually every option. I worked it hard, but it was super clean...95 percent both interior and exterior. Yeah, it is possible to work a truck hard and keep it nice. Most of these trucks had the 3.73 gears in the differentials. However, Ford offered 4.10...and 4.30 gears. The 6.0L with a load in tow and the 4.30 gears.....will run up Eisenhower Tunnel or Vail Pass like it was a Sunday afternoon drive on I-25. The 6.0L diesel would out tow and out perform the 7.3L gas with the 4.30 gears. However, I'd bet the 7.3L gas with the 4.30 gears would out perform the 6.0L diesel with the 3.73 gears. If the 6.0L had the 4.10 gears...probably be close toss up.

@@baileyhatfield4273 ***Maybe you will become a Ford fan.*** You are CORRECT...the Ford Super Duty with the 7.3L gas engine, 10R140G and 4.30 gears IS the IDEAL truck for many people. I have had diesel trucks...and they "launch the load" from a stop...and pass with a load very good at highway speeds. However, I now tow lighter loads and less frequently. The 7.3L will still tow heavy loads...and more than Ford states...just not quite as easy and efficiently. These are the main reasons I just ordered on March 30th, a 2022 F350 Lariat - Ultimate Package - Black Appearance Package - Tremor Package with most all options. ***I have always like the GM gas engines. BUT, I absolutely and completely HATE the Chevrolet and GMC trucks....especially the 4WD trucks. In short, 4WD GM trucks are PATHETIC off-road...especially on uneven terrain in mud and or snow. These trucks always get stuck. Why? IFS Axle instead of Solid Front Axle and...Low Hanging Frame Rails cause the following ------------------> 1. POOR Front Axle Articulation off-road on uneven terrain 2. POOR Approach Angle 3. POOR Departure Angle 4. PATHETIC Breakover Angle (GM trucks "High Center" off-road and become "teeter totters" 5. Square / Rectangle Wheel Wells with Little Itty Bitty Tires. The proverbial "round peg in a square hole"...Stupid engineering for a 4WD truck. Lift? It takes either a 4 inch or 6 inch depending upon desired tire size......messes up the "Center of Gravity". People who own and drive Fords and Dodges can get 37 inch tires with Level Suspension System (Carli Suspension). AEV gets a 40 inch tire under a Dodge with a mild 3 inch lift. 6. Solid Front Axle better for towing...more weight up front...better balance. That said, I have seen to many people driving a Ford F250 and towing a big 5th Wheel...with rear suspension sag...NOT safe. If I was a Highway Patrol...I'd pull these people over...write 'em a ticket and tell them to install Air Lift, Firestone or Hellwig air bags. If they can afford the rig, they can easily afford the air bags. 7. Ford Super Duty trucks have Fully Boxed Frames that are e-Coated. 8. Ford offers more and better amenities and options. Plus, not many "option restrictions" like Dodge and GM is the worst...want or get a certain option...cannot have one or more other options. GM wants "assembly line efficiency" more than "customer satisfaction".***

Great video. I own a landscape company in CT with multple trucks for the past 20 years. All our trucks are Fords 03-08s and well maintained. 1 is a 05 6.0 the rest are 5.4s 2 and 3 valves and 1 04 v10. The gas trucks have had the lowest cost of ownership and best reliability to date and are all still in service along side the 6.0. When my 6.0 was out of warranty and the 5th dealer replaced Egr cooler broke I dropped 12k to fix it right. 6.0 is a great motor once you strip the garbage off it and put good quality parts back in their place. Haven't had any major issues since. The gas trucks have only needed the normal maintenance no big chunks of money thrown at them like the 6.0 needed on top of its regular maintenance items. I tow mostly in the 10k-19k range daily to jobs using conventional and goose but have towed 20-25k. The 04 v10 Srw 350 crew 8ft bed with the 4R100 is my favorite truck. I use it as a personal/work truck still and over the years made some upgrades the biggest being the headers and exhaust to let it breathe and changed the 3.73 gears to 4.56 gears. 4.56 was the happy medium to keep the rpms down enough for highway driving and still great for towing based on my needs with better mpgs than going with the 4.88s. If I was to buy new today especially after watching this my next truck would have the 7.3 with 4.30 gears or steeper. I use the 6.0 dually and the Srw v10 to haul the heavier stuff. I prefer using the v10 to the 6.0 the V10 imo is an absolute beast. Watching this video is almost identical to how my v10 using 4.56 gears pulls a 18k goose on inclines 3300 rpm shes puller in 3rd gear. Steep inclines she will drop to 2nd gear and roar at 4600 but will hold 50mph or gain back. Not to many people realize how reliable and torqy the v10 really especially with the steeper gearing. People had always told me I'm crazy for pulling anything over 12k all these years without using a diesel. This video helps put that to rest LOL thanks Colton! From my experience if your towing 20k+ diesel makes sense. If your 19k or less where i have been mostly towing I'd go gas with 4.30, 4.56 or 4.88 gears all day long its a cheaper cost of ownership and still gets the same job done.

First time I have ever gone for a Hail Mary like this. Some old guys buy Corvettes. I’d rather drive this. Im currently on a vacation trip using a similar truck only it is a Lariat. Ford gave our company this truck and said it was experimental. Won’t tell us what that means. But they just want it driven. It has telematics on it. My CEO authorized me to take it because he thinks this will convince me to back down to an F-150 again. Haha. I drove it 680 miles today from southwest LA to Smyrna TN. All smooth highway. Truck is a dream on the highway. Impressed with the engine. Tomorrow I’ll calculate mpg at the pump but the truck says it did 15.7mpg on the trip. This truck has mild mud terrain tires on it that aren’t great for highway. They are noisy. I’m sure they have a lot of rolling resistance. I was in ECO mode the entire day by the way. Great truck. I’m convinced I want to keep my 350 order intact. Why did I go 350? Slide in camper. Slightly better payload. I ordered it derated to 10k GVWR and confirmed with State of LA and my Progressive insurance Agent that I won’t have to worry about it being classified “commercial”. Everyone says it will ride hard. Sick of hearing that. The 250 I drive today feels like an F-150 from a couple decades ago. It’s a TRUCK. It’s a Super Duty. It’s no toy.

FYI, the 7.3 Godzilla has a cam phaser. Great content. I've been looking for a new truck. I'm probably going to buy a SD with a 7.3. I sold the last gasser I owned in 1999, 25 years ago. I sold my F350 during COVID because I got a good price for it. I'm sick of owning diesel trucks. I think Ford knocked it out of the park with the 7.3 and the 10 speed. I watched your other videos... my F350 needed a high pressure fuel pump and the rest, luckily it was covered by warranty. I also plugged the DPF on it. Luckily I found a used one for not too much. The turbo failed just before I sold it. It was a nightmare to work on. First step to doing anything under the hood was to pull the radiator. I must have done that a dozen times. I totally agree that the 7.3 is cheap to replace if anything goes wrong with it. You and I think alike. I love that you don't have to pull the cab to work on the 7.3. I love how Ford set up the 10R140 with 3 OD ratios, closely spaced. Great for towing and great for MPG running empty. Even better than a 13 speed, which usually has just 2 OD ratios, 12th and 13th. I totally agree none of the pickup gassers prior to now have been suitable for real towing. They also didn't have a decent transmission with enough speeds. I've been debating the 7.3 or a diesel for a couple months. Your videos were very helpful. A couple advantages you didn't mention... the 7.3 will start way better than a diesel and warm up faster. And tolerate idling a lot better. And the 7.3 package is about 600 pounds lighter - lighter long block, lighter fuel injection system, lighter exhaust system, smaller cooling system, etc. 600 extra pounds of payload is very welcome - will save me from having to go with a dually. Jacobs builds a stand alone butterfly exhaust brake for the ISC (8.3). I wonder if it would work on the 7.3 ? BTW, my family had a road construction company. I've done a lot of welding and wrenching on heavy iron. I like your FL80. That boom must be incredibly handy in the field. Keep up the good work.

@@adamant7146 I’ve got several trailers but only one of them has about a 2000 pound tongue weight for conventional towing. We don’t tow very often so the diesel was not a choice because I did not want to spend the upfront money the cost of diesel DEF fluid and additional oil changes. It would’ve taken me six years of driving to make up the difference in the cost of diesel. Yes I know when you resell your truck you can recoup lots if not maybe all the money but I did not want to spend the amount of money upfront. With all the reviews I knew the 7.3 with the 430 axle will definitely do the job and it does. As far as 250 versus 350 can’t remember now but I believe they might be the same. The choices were very slim when we bought it and there was very little inventory in the state of Texas. Wasn’t looking for the Tremor but we sure like it and it gets a lot of attention. The stock tires have been great with no issues and they are relatively quiet. No death wobble no problems at 15 months old and 25,000 miles. I’d have to look inside the door at the payload but I do believe mine is about 3600 pound payload. Transmission and engine work fantastic. I suppose if we lived up in the mountains or engine braking would be extremely helpful then I would’ve opted for the diesel. The brakes are fantastic. I think you can only get the 430 rear end on the trimmer package. Get the 250 or 350 and you would be happy. Not sure if there is a difference on the 2022 models versus the 2020 which is a minor. Look up the specifications on the Ford website and you would be able to determine the difference between 350 and 250. We’ve got the camper package 11,500 GVWR and heavier front Springs. I didn’t buy it for fuel economy and I really don’t care. This is our daily driver. How do you suppose if money was not an option I would get the diesel but the problem with the diesel is it is a lot less payload. Good luck

I have a 04 Chevy 3500 8.1 (496ci) with a Allison transmission 4.10 rear gears. The truck weighs 8,800lbs crewcab long bed 4x4. I pull heavy loads of hay weighing 22,000lbs that is 30,000lbs total the 8.1 is pulling I live in Kentucky so driving up and down hills and around curves is a daily thing. The most gas it used is 5.5mpg but a lot of time it will be in the 6.5 mpg range. Empty it gets 11mpg hwy and 9 mpg city. I have a very nice 01 Chevy 2500HD Duramax that get much better fuel mileage and has more toque. But I use the Chevy 3500 8.1 dually to pull my gooseneck and heavy loads because it can handle a load better with 6 tires on the pavement the feel of better control over a 3/4 ton.

@@nicolathonathan770 It is impressive...especially with the 3.55 gears. What is shocking is Ford building Class 2 and Class 3 trucks equipped with gas engines and the 3.55's...even with a 10R140G transmission. From what I have read on forums and comments on KZfaq videos...the trucks with the 3.55 gears do not get any noticeable or significant better mpg's on fuel. Personally, with a new or newer Super Duty and a gas engine, I would not want any gear ratios with a gas engine except 4.10:1 or 4.30:1. Ford does not offer and has not offered the 4.10 gears for a few years. Not sure why as it would be a great gear ratio for many truck owners. I sold a 2006 F350 CC 6.0L 4WD SRW 172 that had 3.73 gears, ARP head studs, SCT with 395 HP, BTS, PacBrake PXRB exhaust brake and all Bullet Proof Diesel parts. It was slow pulling loads up Eisenhower Tunnel, Vail Pass, Monarch Pass, Wolf Creek Pass and Rabbit Ears Pass. I regret not ordering the 4.30 gears in that truck. As for the 6.7L in the F250 or F350.....don't want and no longer need a diesel, but if I did...I would prefer 3.92 or 4.10 gears and would not want less than 3.73 gears. I don't care what the engineers in Dearborn say.....they are not pulling heavy loads in hill country in the "little mountain" states just west of the east coast, the Midwest.....or much less the long steep grades on mountain passes in the Rocky Mountain states. Guarantee the powerful 6.7L...with 3.55 gears just towing 20,000 to 25,000 pounds will slow down considerably going up Eisenhower Tunnel, Vail Pass or Rabbit Ears Pass.....or numerous other mountain passes in other states.

Wow. A "new" 2021 a "quarter" before 2022 production starts and a "1-ton" you had to special order as Ford apparently sits on a trainload of $7500 "crate motors" that are only "Ford Performance" OTC to retail customers and all the "swappers".getting them free but are "service replacement" in the Ford dealer parts system. What's the holdup? The "Ford" 10-speed automatic transmission for that "big-block".or the 3.73 "Ford" rear axle in that "one-ton" or the fact that your "special order" is a really goofy way to order a "1-ton" and you're A-OK with paying all the taxes, insurance, registration etc on a "brand-new" truck that will be a "year old" model year wise about 2 months and a day after "delivery" and you're going to pay 2022 taxes on it twice is one "calendar year"? Let me guess. You're paying "MSRP" too. And.maybe a "premium" for a light-duty axle ratio in a "1-ton". And a "Chevy" ratio at that. I had 3.73s once. In a '69 Chevy C10 Custom light-duty half-ton that left the assembly line with a 307 and a 3-speed on the column. My 1-ton has 4.56s. '85 K30 4x4 dually regular cab-chassis with a flabed and side boxes. A "mild" 10:1ish early 70s 454 "car motor" with enough cam to lope a little, Edelbrock 2-O intake, Holley 750 double-pumper that's going bye bye for a Q-Jet or EFI when the motor gets "freshened" up again and maybe finally sees a boring bar and hone after 150,000+ miles "towing" a TLB on a 25-foot tandem dual flatbed for a concrete crew, headers and a Holley blue pump and about 4.psi to the.dual feed. SM465 behind that needing 3rd-gear synchros "already" with somewhere north of 300,000 miles on it. "Direct-drive" NP205 behind that without the.pesky "coupler" from trans output to T-case input. Good old 14-bolt behind that and a REAL Dana 60 up front. Stack of leaves on each side in the back thick enough when "sled pulling" and wiping up the "stock class" it barely "squats" even with the hitch in the highest receiver (got a stack of 5 or 6 tubes in the rear bed "skirt" tied into the whole main bed frame and gooseneck hitch so zero need for "drop hitches") hole I can put it in and keep the front wheels on the ground untll she "powers out" 25-100 feet ahead of the "first loser" and then there's a good six inches of "overloads". All factory and straight-truckesque. I've been told it's more like a 1 1/4-ton being a cab-chassis with no worry from/by the factory about "overloading" a pickup box and tailgate. Dual tanks. 12 mpg if "adult-driven" with occasional bursts.of "WOT" up to wherever we get beyond 85 mph. No tach. No need. I keep my foot in it until somebody gets scared I notice the oil pressure needle is starting to "flutter". Pretty sure somebody stuck an HV oil pump in it back in the day and with 6ish quarts in the pan and some in the filter I figure about 60 seconds at 6000ish RPM is about what it takes to pump most of it "upstairs"and start sucking a little air. Probably go back to stock when it gets "freshened". I figure she's good for an honest 375ish horsepower at the flywheel at 6000-6250ish RPM. And at 7000ish pounds with 6 on the ground and stock size "all terrain" tires at that she always powers out before she spins out. Low range 2nd gear; high range1st gear, even high 2nd with a "light" sled. She'll go in about any gear you can start it in and still whip most everybody even it's too high. Sad to say she hasn't whipped nearly as many Fords as Chevys or even Dodges. And she's spanked a badass 440 and even a genooine 426 Hemi in front of a Torque-Flite. Last season I pulled right after buying her and getting her out of the weeds and back on the track for the first time in probably 15 years. Forst pull we were having neglected fuel system issues and running like crap and got beat pretty bad by that 440 Dodge she used to spank. I Holly blued and dual fed and adjustable regulated and filtered her and got one tank cleaned out and drawing good and threw some plugs and a timing light at her. The next weekend the tables turned and we went from about 30 feet behind the Dodge to 30 feet ahead when I shut her down "early" because she was bouncing just a little. Enough the front tires were a foot off the ground. Repeatedly. She didn't break. About any other truck would have. After that we ran the table at three more pulls and I "made money" and paid for my fuel and fuel system parts and beer. Only had one "scare". Very stock-looking 2000ish Chevy K2600HD with "8100" badges on the side and a bone in its teeth and 42 cubes on The Dually. I don't think he had 4.56s and I know we had probably 500-600 lbs. outright and that again in hitch height/distance advantage on him. I had maybe .5 mph on him when the pan dropped at 3/4 track and a few more Rs maybe. Probably not much more "horsepower". But a different "ECU" behind the wheel. 25 feet seemed close after putting 50-75 easy on everything else. I got a feeling "Godzilla" would be Rat turds in no time if your "1-ton" and my "tonner" ever got together. I just don't know of any really "strong" factory "bjg-blocks" that need more transmission "speeds" than any pickup truck in history BEFORE you get into the transfer case. "Godzilla". Typical "Ford power". Complete science fiction.

Figure the most weight I’ll ever have will be comparable what you have in the video, but mostly would have 3 cars loaded on it. I’m thinking a F550 with a 5 star tune to bring it to pickup hp/tq levels and the 4:88’s should be a decent rig for this kind of weight. Not going in the mountains all the time. About 30-40% of the time around Black Mountain/ Monteagle type passes. I think it would eventually take its toll riding high rpm like that, but if that were to happen at over 100k miles, engine replacement would still be cheaper than a dpf or injector job on the 6.7.

Just imagine the godzilla with a turbo. I bet you could make one of these make like the diesel torque. But also trucks are heavily detuned to stay reliable so there is many more potential to be unlock and there is people already making over 1000 HP and torque.

Yup. I’d even take the 5.0 Coyote with a turbo. I know everyone is raving about the 7.3 but I wish it had another 100 ft lbs of torque. I tow in ID and MT during the summer. I think this truck would struggle a bit.

@@jjsemperfi I've towed 10000 lbs with it and even had max payload in the bed of the truck and it didn't complain or struggle once. I have the 3.55 differential. But I should of just gotten the 4.30 and be done with it. You only lose like 1 mpg by getting them.

Been watching your videos to help with our purchase decision. Currently driving a 2020 Ram 3500 Cummins. With only 9300 miles on the truck, on a recent 16 hour trip, it left us counting down to limp mode 6 hours from home. Luckily it happened close to a large city. After 3 dealers refused to help us, and standing to lose a $2100 weekend, the 4th dealer we contacted got us in right away. Had us back on the road within 2 hours. Issue was a stuck DEF tank level indicator. We use the truck mostly for snowmobiling in the mountains in winter (450lb sled deck plus 2 snowmobiles 500lbs+ each loaded over the rear axle). We tow a 7' x 14' enclosed 2-3 times a week April through October, and plan for a 7000 - 8000lb bumper pull camper within the next couple years. With the remote areas we frequent, these unreliable emissions are unacceptable, and I'm reluctant to delete a brand new truck. Can't imagine the long term cost of keeping emissions on out of warranty either. With crazy headwinds, we averaged 11.5 mpg on that 16 hour trip and used around 5 gallons of DEF. I'm pretty sure I can get as good economy from a 7.3L without all the other diesel expense and hassle. The local dealer made a very good offer for the Ram on trade, so the order is going in this week for a 2022 F-350 7.3L. Only thing is I'm kind of stuck between 3.73 and 4.30. Will never be towing even close to what you do, but thinking if the MPG difference between the two gearings is negligible, then maybe I ought to let the seven three be all it can be and go 4.30?

Get the taller gears if you're going to be towing under 12k. The fuel savings is worth it.

I'd go with the 4.30s I don't believe your towing mpg will change much but it will be better to have the closer trans ratios with the 4.30s when your towing that often.

@Colton Brown The order went in on Friday. F-350 Lariat, 4x4 crew, 7.3L, 4.30, LWB, Star white, black appearance package, FX4.... Now the long wait 😔

Thanks for the real world video. Did you have it set on cruise at 3:50 when it slowed to 50mph? Or were you on the pedal?

From your experience, I’m going to be ordering the 7.3 gas engine. Should I go with a f250 or f350 and a 6-3/4 bed or 8’ bed. Looking to haul a gooseneck trailer roughly with weights around 10 pounds. That’s trailer and loaded together

I'm my opinion I'm a long bed guy especially for pulling a gooseneck. Gets your cab farther away from The trailer.

This is an Awesome engine but let's Not forget the Chevy 496 8.1. I had a 2500 Suburban with it weighs 9,998lbs and would pull ANYTHING you could hook up to it.
@ColtWR
@ColtWR Жыл бұрын
The problem with the 8.1 in the suburban is you couldn't get it with the allison. You only could get the 8.1 and the allison in a pickup.
