I've killed over a dozen deer using 154gr sp and had almost all of the jackets separate from the lead. ending up staying in the chest cavity while the lead kept going. Not that it made a difference to the deer, it still died

Tulla or wolf?… I’ve never had a tulla come apart unless it did it within 50 but I wouldn’t know cause I haven’t found one after that close. Which still means it probably didn’t come apart. They are both hollow base though. One hog shoulder made one shed about a 1/3ish stopped in other shoulder.

Excellent test. It would be awesome to see what these bullets do at range. Set the gel block out at a hundred and fifty yards, and see how the bullets react under actual hunting conditions?

I have the same rifle, and plenty of AR 7.62x39 mags, I swapped out the mag well with Ruger American ranch 556/223 mag well and now run my AR 7.62x39 mags with no issue. The best part is when I called Ruger and and told them what I had and what I wanted to do they sent me the mag well a new magpul AR mag and new screws for FREE.

I owned this very same rifle for two years now. Boy did I get picked on for buying a 762x39 bolt rifle. But let me tell you, THIS THING IS AWESOME. I shoots cheap ammo amazingly well at 100-300 yards. And now for the past two years its my go to everything rifle. Great deer and hog rifle.

It's a great round. I only pick on the soy boyz for snapping 7.62x39 barrels onto their ARs. It's like they know AKs are better but don't want to admit it. I have AKs but would love to get a bolt action 7.62x39. Nice choice!

@@theroller5673 If a garbage mugging and drive by gun AK is so great then where are they at the greatest shooting match's like Camp Parry where the AR and M-16 compete. The AK is a criminal's gun with shoot from the hip accuracy. Also, the AK is inherently a jamamatic - fails often to fire and blows up often garbage gun. I've been watching Ukrainian soldier in trenched in fire fights having to unjam those trash AKs and talking the AKs apart to fix them right in an assault on them by Russians. One of the captured Russian officers stated he was the only survivor of 100 Russian soldiers because their AKs kept jamming up and some blew up when assaulting the Ukrainians in the trenches.

@@Lure-Benson wow you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. I have both an AK and several ar15s not a problem with either. They are both great rifles in their own right. @@codyworley5623 I just wrote to you very technical information that doesn't come from where you get all of your gun information from KZfaq, so you care to take back that crap you wrote? I am 63 years old with I've been hanging around a local gun shop from age 16 when this shop was making High dollar custom rifles. I am also since 1978 a professional hunting guide in the Pacific NW - Alaska - and work in Romania. What I know about firearms comes from the say been there done that ! I am sure you have no idea how far 500 yards is really a long way and if I asked you to show me 500 yard you would point to the end or 2 city blocks. So let me turn that around on you, never run that PUNK mouth to an adult man that builds custom rifles, is also a professional hunting guide when all you know is coming from KZfaq videos. @@Lure-Benson Must be a troll comment, if not, then all I can say is bias perspectives negate facts or truth in order to believe whatever fiction they want in order to feel good about themselves or something they like or have been taught. It does nothing beneficial for you because you miss out on the truth due to your own bias opinion which literally stands in your way, which you allow btw, that deflects truth so you live blind by choice, it says a lot about ones character which is clear and obvious. That being said, Ak's are in a lot of matches but the inherent design is for war, not shooting matches lol. There isn't a whole lot of special ammo out there for them here in the states, it's hard to get reloading stuff for them, they are not super popular like the AR due to obvious facts such as we are in AMERICA and it's a soviet weapon lol. After market for an AR is endless and by design the AR comes more ergonomic (which AK's now days are coming that way as well) Also the other thing is because of the bigger bullet it has more recoil so target acquisition while firing and moving is harder. There are a lot of gun matches all around the country where people run 5.56 aks' 5.45 ak's etc. and a lot of them take 1st place, but so do ar's, also some 7.62 ak's take first as well. AK accuracy is actually really good despite people's myths which came from the middle east where all the barrels are pitted and worn out, neglected for 50 years, rusted, never maintained etc. etc. which btw, they are still functioning which goes to say at least something haha. Same with the AR getting a bad rep during Vietnam, which those problems have been fixed which is why I don't hold that opinion. 7.62x39 making 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches at 100 yards is great accuracy and that is what these AK's are capable of. Anyone who brags about 5.56 accuracy negates the fact that anything over 200 yards has such little power on target that you would be better suited with something else. Would be like using a .22 at that point, check the sheets on it. That being said, the 7.62x39 accuracy is good up to 300-350 yards, 400 is pushing it (still has power, but environmental effects really start pushing the bullet such as wind), but typical battle range is 300 and under which means technically speaking, the AK has the advantage when it comes to stopping power if it's a 5.56 vs 7.62x39. If you like AR's which i'm assuming you do because of what you said, good for you, but whatever you just wrote was honestly embarrassing due to the fact that the truth on these matters have already come to light, and has been available to the public for some years especially since the popularity of the AK has been on the rise.

Concern on the jacket shedding and remaining in the bore: My money says the expansion in the gel affected the bullet structure more than passage in the bore. Without the expansion - in the barrel - the bullet was still integral. Does not seem an 'issue' to me. I do like the video. (I saw the accuracy test video with the same rifle and selection of ammo first.) Straightforward presentation of events and clear descriptions. Perfect. By the way; I bought three boxes (sixty rounds) of Tula made 154 grain soft point bullet ammo at a gun show a week ago. I haven't been able to find any either, I think that was the last of the breed in the Western World. Then I found where an online business is still advertising it. Details on request. ALSO, I've worked up a 150 grain load using 150 grain .303 British bullets. They are (officially by maker specifications) .001" too large in diameter. I've shot more than a couple and they don't seem to be aware. Details on request. Disclaimer: I have not fired either the Tula 154 load or my load into gel blocks. The Tula product chronographs 2164 fps. My loads run average of 2225 or so. Both are accurate for deer about as far as a .30-30 Winchester.

I love my Ruger 762x39. It's a great lightweight rifle. I've had mine several years and it had replaced all my other rifles for hunting deer. I've killed several deer and recovered the projectile under the skin on the off side. The Hornady Black is an awesome round in this caliber (same projectile as the red box Hornady you tested but with a brass case and twice the price). The 154 grain wolf sp is a hard hitter under 100 yds. Even the heavy subsonic loads shoot well out of the Ruger. They are really quiet with a suppressor too.

Excellent video. Greetings from just across the TN border. I used the Sellier and Bellot 125 grain JSP last year to great effect. High shoulder "lightswitch" shot passed through both lungs and destroyed the spinal cord, the buck was DRT. One of the most accurate factory loads I've found for 7.62x39, but the price is there too. I had had great success using the Sierra 125 and 150 grain .311 bullets for handloading in this caliber in terms of consistency. They were more consistent in weight when I weighed them than the SST I love so much, so give them a try if you have a chance. I get sub 2MOA performance out of an RD 702 and a VEPR FM when used with about 29.9 grains of CFE BLK, #34 primers(love them for inclement weather), and Norma brass. Good enough for the edge of the effective range of this caliber, but most of us aren't taking shots at 400 meters.

I just found 110 rounds of 154 grain wolf soft point after 2 years of looking. Ironically I found it at a rummage sale. In my area. I haven't shot it yet but I believe I will use it in my 7.62x39 10.5 inch pistol for deer season and sight it in for 100 yards.

I've been a little distracted with my ARs lately, so it has been a while since I shot a lot of x39, but I believe some of the Wolf HPs were loaded with the Uly 8M3 round, which is a good bullet with consistent upset and accuracy. I have always thought the x39 out of a short bolt gun would be interesting. That Ruger American looks neat, and probably serves really well for pest control around the property. Good test.

@@joemoment-o1275 No. It is hard to find curved magazines that function well in an AR. And I think 5.56 has a lot of advantages over the x39, so it hasn't been one of my priorities.

I’d take the SST for deer hunting. Like the wound track and penetration. The Federal would be my next choice. Second and third for self defense. First one as last choice. Thanks for some good science!

Basically, the Russian hollow points are a FMJ bullets with the tip opened up, expansion is hit or miss depending on range and velocity at time of impact on target. Core separation from the jacket is only been apparent are far as my observations on recovered bullets, and I've never seen or heard of it happening in the rifle's bores, as the steel bullet jacket is strong enough to retain the lead core to keep that from happening.

Great video man! 7.62 is one of my favorites, but I don't ever say anything negative about 5.56 like Ammo fan boys do. That Gold Dot is something else though!! Any of the results that you showed were things that surprised me as well. I have a crap ton of 125 SP rounds that I saved for a rainy day, but none heavier. Hi Jim, This is my first time watching, and the subject matter was spot on for what I was looking for today. I just started shooting/reloading 7.62x39 and wanted to see the SST performance as I found a box of 100 projectiles. The Varmageton was also of interest, but wasn't looking, so Bonus. FYI, I use the 75gr Speer Gold Dot for my 5.56 loads using 8208xbr and they are a home run in 5.56. (Not 223 as I don't reload for 223 pressures). Are you located in TX or OK?

I got good results with the Hornady SST and they were quite reasonable price wise (came in boxes of 50 rounds). However, I don't think they make them any more. Now they have the Hornady SST Black. Brass case and definitely more expensive (box of 20 rounds). But I still get the same accuracy with the Hornady Black that I did with the standard SST. And coming out of my Ruger American Ranch, it's consistently right at 1" groups at 100 yds.

Tul154 or 3371’s. Heavies are .5-.7” out of that gun and better body shot rounds to 200. 3371’s are also .5’s not hollow point though hollow tip. And basically match ammo. Yes they explode within 200. Which is why I use them in shorter sets for head/neck shots. That’s actually a sub moa gun. Sight the 154’s at 110 and the 3371’s at 125 and both 70-80 yard arches will still be within 1” high.

Wolf hp is absolutely nasty on deer-sized game; it stops deer literally in their tracks if you do your job with bullet placement. If it encounters bone it basically explodes into sharp pieces, cutting multiple wound channels.

Barnaul is very accurate, Tulammo is accurate enough. Never had an issue with either. I have read comments from many hog hunters down south that they prefer SP to HP in 7.62x39. No.. That round was made for shorter barrels such as AK.. You might gain a little more with 18 or so but most people don't use this round for long range past 250 yards for hunting and that is pushing it.. Don't get me wrong the round has been killing people in every war on the planet out to 400 odd yards for 75 years but not for hunting or PR shooting!!
