The fish and chips coating you had is battered. There are options for breaded fish and chips as well. Mostly those are fish fingers. But there is a clear difference between battered and breaded.

The Americans coined the name “French fries” when US servicemen discovered them in Belgium during World War 1. In Belgium they are called frites. The British, although not the inventors of fried potatoes, named them chips. In the UK they have a worryingly high number of words for different types of potato foods. They call French fries just fries, and thicker-cut fries that come from a chip shop are called chips. Also in the UK, Chips are generally much thicker, the kind of thing you'd get from a chip shop or pub. Generally they look a bit more irregular/less uniform than fries and are normally softer on the inside because they are larger.
