Also, "I am a new person" makes sense if I am, for example, a new person in a place (a new colleague, or visiting the place the first time) "Oh, mä oon uusi ihminen tässä koirapuistossa"

This method of opposites is a good one because it focuses on what words have in common, since they are opposite points on a range, rather than just the difficult or unique meanings. It's better to have and integrated understanding than a comprehensive one.

@@marin_1441 So easy to get right, and yet, so easy to get wrong. That's because when people make mistakes in how they approach learning languages, they often don't realize it until they end up with some kind of obsessive disorder psychologically. So then if they still don't identify the faulty method they can also run into the error of assuming it's something intrinsic to reality that's causing problems as well rather than themselves.

You are a good teacher by holding up items in conjunction with the word. And showing the puhekieli words is very helpful. If someone ever says to me, "You don't sound like a talking Finnish dictionary like may foreigners do" I will give KatChats the credit.

I'm pretty sure "gepardi" and "leopardi" are etymologically the same. Finnish borrowed it from Swedish (I would imagine), but there's a long train of borrowings before that: Finnish-Swedish-French-Latin-Greek-Persian.

You could say "the new kid in class" or "the new man on the job" or "I'm new here." The meaning is slightly different than "young," of course--it means one is new to the situation, not new in absolute terms. How would you say these things in Finnish?
@mikahamari6420

English *new* vs. *young* and Finnish *uusi* vs. *nuori* go 1:1 in every case I can imagine, they are very similar. We would say for example: *Luokassa on uusi oppilas* 'pupil' *Olen uusi täällä* As you said, here *uusi* doesn't refer to person's age, but to his/her situation, so it is the correct word, as *new* in English.

Katya, hi great video as usual. I was wondering...combining the tunteet and this, would I say "Minua vahna" for "i am feeling old?"
@KatChatsFinnish
@KatChatsFinnish 2 жыл бұрын
Oh you picked a fun one! In Finnish "vanha" isn't used as a feeling in the same was sad or happy are. So how I would say this phrase is: "mulla on vanha olo" = I have an old feeling
