I planted potatoe chits early, in February, prompted by internet info. Freezing weather hit twice. I was fortunate that thre out of seven chits sprouted and are healthy. Next year, I may try again in February, as an experiment, but inside a high tunnel where it will be better protected. I didn't plant on planting potatoes until mid March, so I consider them bonus potatoes. It took a month for the first sprouts from February's batch to appear, and two week for the March batch, so the time gain was only about ten days.

Here in the eastern US, the weather has not followed our rules. We keep getting these arctic air masses coming down after a week or two of nice spring days. I think hoop beds are on the list for next year. The last three years we have had cold winters and unusually warm springs, this year it has been a mild winter and now a cool spring. The "blackberry winter " kicked in after 2 weeks of nice warm days back in April. The banana peppers are looking very stressed. The tomatoes are doing fine so far and are flowering. The leeks, garlic, and onions seem unfazed.

I was past my last frost date, I waited 5 days and put out some tomatoes that I started way to early and they needed to get out. I was keeping them under a plastic tarp so they were warm enough. Only to find out that tonight it will get down to 28 degrees. Im glad they are in containers, so they can be brought inside. Looks like another opportunity to learn in my second year of gardening.

The tree is planted in the backyard and surrounded by lawn. It is watered by an automatic sprinkling system which waters the lawn. It also is fertilized by the lawn fertilizer only.

Scott, I have transplanted carrots by taking as much soil as possible with a flat spade & gently lay the spadeful of soil & carrots flat until I get to the destination. GENTLY stand the carrots as close to vertical as possible, then pack the spadeful of carrots FIRMLY upright. I then water the soil GENTLY each time until the tops stand erect. If there is too much top during transplanting I trim the biggest leaves to help the plant. CHEERS, from AUSTRALIA.🥕🥕🥕🥕🦘🦘🦘

One mistake I've made a couple of times: Don't put nitrogen rich mulch around the stem of the plant (especially in wet, humid environments). You can create a rot around the stem that will kill your plant within a few days. Grass clippings & coffee grounds are some examples. Leave a small gap between the stem & the mulch so the roots are covered, but the stem is free. I use arborist wood chips as my primary mulch, but will add in some greens when I replenish my wood chips (I live in Hawaii and the woodchips break down relatively quickly).

Scott, do pole beans transplant well? From a previous video (I saved your list of indoor vs indoor/out, riskies, and outside only from a previous video), you recommended them being outside only, but I also see other folks growing in peat pots or just regular pots so I got confused. I experimented this year and started some in Styrofoam cups, and loosened/disturbed the roots for some of them when I transplanted, and left others alone, and they still are all growing OK, I can't tell which is disturbed vs not. Am I just lucky because that's my only mistake, or are (pole) beans more transplant-friendly than we give them credit for? Maybe next year I'll experiment growing some indoor vs direct planted beans, always looking to learn and see how much punishment plants can take :)
@GardenerScott

They can be difficult to transplant, but I don't think that's necessary because they grow so quickly from seed. You may have been gentle enough that your beans appreciated the effort.

You probably have clay soil which holds a lot of water. You're doing the right thing by checking the moisture level. Stop watering every day and only water when you detect that the soil is beginning to be less saturated, but you don't want it to dry out. Lightly moist is what you want so it may take time for you to figure out the best watering schedule and the proper amount.

Scott... can you comment on the Dow Chemical persistent herbicide (aminopyralids) compost and mulch disaster that can ruin one's garden soil for up to five years? I just became aware of this, and a full night of research makes me believe it is still a threat in the U.S. What do you hear in CO?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 жыл бұрын
It is a threat and one of the biggest problems is that retailers and free sites that produce compost don't know the source of their material. I've asked some local sources and they don't know if the manures they use might be contaminated. It's always best for gardeners to know what products they use, where they come form, and if there is doubt about contamination to avoid it.

I even had an experience where I specifically asked someone giving away composted horse manure if the horses are grazed on pastures treated with Grazon or any similar product and the guy said no never. I took a 5 gallon bucket to do a pot test and noticed no worms or anything like that ( first sign ) mixed the compost with soil transplanted a tomato and days later the leaves are all curled and crazy looking and a week later dead. Since then I stick to rabbit manure (Prefered) or chicken. That stuff will wreck your garden!!

I noticed in this and other vids that you have at least one bed made from concrete block. Have you ever noticed any problems using concrete block/cinder block for a raised bed? Lots of information on the web stating that not only can concrete blocks make your soil too alkaline, but also that they are made with fly ash which has a nigh content of metals. Asking manufacturers if their blocks contain fly ash is useless because they tell you "they 'may' contain fly ash, depending on the batch". :/ So you never know if the blocks you buy are from a batch made using fly ash or not. Same goes for the retaining wall blocks. I want to build a concrete block bed (because it's the cheapest way and most durable material), but I'm very confused and "scared" about it.

Watering...I don't have enough pudding! Seriously, you must have a tough time watering in all that wind and dry air. I don't like using overhead sprinkler. I catch all rain water I can in cow tanks with screen to keep out animals. I bought a larger bilge pump this year in hopes I can transfer faster. To water by hand takes a long time in a.m. and looking for a faster way. I have a small drip line kit I tried last year--its ok, but it doesn't really soak but 1 area. In sand even with bark ect. It goes straight down when it's so dry. We have drought in zone 5a South central WI. The soaker hose you can only hook so many feet together and tends to puddle in areas. We set 5 gal pails up high and hooked drippers to last year for squash as we could not walk through them and worked ok, but still feel it wasn't decent coverage. Trying to save money and resources watering by hand with rain water and soaker won't work with that system. What do you think is best way to get watering done b4 the sun goes down?

It does take a long time to hand water but I like spending the time in my garden. It depends on the weather, but watering at dusk can be a good time to do it.

@@GardenerScott I also love spending time in the garden, but the heat sets in b4 I'm done. Not fond of evening watering here as we get quite humid. That is one great thing for you as the air is so dry.

@@GardenerScott Ok great just wondering so I can look up the weather conditions there. I'm experiencing a snow storm at the moment here in New Brunswick CA.

I was enjoying the video until an add derailed the presentation: "If playback doesn't begin shortly, try restarting your device." Nothing quite as demotivating as an add that requires a system reboot.
