GROW UP MAN!

GROW UP MAN!

Күн бұрын

In today's video, I'm sharing 7 compelling reasons why growing Nepenthes, those captivating pitcher plants, should be on your to-do list this year. As someone deeply passionate about tropical plants, I can't emphasize enough how Nepenthes have become a standout in my collection.
Join me as I reveal these reasons that have me hooked on Nepenthes, but stay tuned because, at the end, I'll explore why some might still hesitate to take the plunge into the world of these incredible plants.
Here is a taster...
1. *Unusual and Impressive:* In 2024, Nepenthes are still considered unusual among non-specialist growers, making them conversation starters with their beautiful yet deadly pitchers.
2. *Fascinating Story:* Nepenthes have a captivating origin story of evolution and adaptation, enticing insects and small mammals with scent, patterns, and nectar over millions of years.
3. *Easy Care:* Despite their exotic appearance, Nepenthes are surprisingly easy to care for, thriving in varying household conditions. They require no special care, just proper watering and feeding.
4. *Natural Insect Control:* Nepenthes help keep insects at bay, making them perfect for homes prone to fungus gnats or unwanted intruders.
5. *Increased Availability:* In 2024, Nepenthes are more accessible than ever, with even garden centers jumping on board alongside online sellers.
6. *Diverse and Beautiful Pitchers:* With a wide range of shapes and patterns, Nepenthes offer a variety of options, from smaller hybrids to impressive, slow-growing specimens.
7. *No Overwatering Concerns:* Forget about the dangers of overwatering! Nepenthes prefer to stay moist, making them an excellent choice for those who tend to be a bit heavy-handed with the watering can.
*OBJECTIONS AND MYTHS:*
While these reasons make Nepenthes seem like the perfect addition to your home, I also address common objections:
- People are wary of the unknown, but Nepenthes care is well-documented.
- Their appearance might be intimidating, but looks can be deceiving.
- Feeding concerns are debunked - they don't need live prey.
- Humidity worries are dispelled - they're more adaptable than you think.
- Potting mix doesn't have to be complex; simplicity works well.
*CONCLUSION:*
If you're considering growing Nepenthes or have reservations, watch till the end for valuable insights. Share your thoughts in the comments, whether you're a seasoned grower or contemplating adding these fascinating plants to your collection.

I think an additional objection is that they can still be quite expensive for a plant. And they can take some time to grow so growing them from seed is a long commitment. So nepenthes can be an investment. And , on the other hand, an 8th reason is if you are serious about them, they can become addictive.

I agree totally to all your points! This is why I prefer to buy plants that are at least a few years old - older the better to be honest. But that does increase expense. In the uk I’ve seen a drop in price recently so hopefully that trend will continue as they become more popular.

Fabulous - another convert! 🤣 It would be preferable if the garden centre plant was labelled so you can look it up - as obviously if it's a lowland plant it would need different conditions to a highland plant. If I was to take an educated guess - it would likely be a highland hybrid (far more numerous) so should be able to cope with a wide range of temperatures. Good luck and I hope it grows well for you - just give it as much light as possible (not full sun through glass).

When watering a nepenthes do you use Purified water or Distilled water ? And when some of pitchers turn half way brown can you cut the pitcher off or cut the brown part off ? Thanks .
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 4 ай бұрын
I use rain water! It's free and in plentiful supply around these parts. It's also completely without nutrients. And yes when the pitcher starts to turn brown you can cut it off where it meets the leaf at any point you like. I tend to wait till it's about halfway too.

Whilst I’d agree that your average supermarket special requires little to no specialist care , deference should be given to species VS hybrid . In many cases nepenthes are far more robust than we give them credit for , however I guarantee if you overwater a veitchii or villosa for any length of time they will develop root rot readily . But i do applaud you for putting nepenthes into the spotlight , I think the biggest faus pas many first time growers make is they will have seen a toothy hamata or similar online and inevitably go for that particular species first , when the shipping pitchers die off and then the plant refuses to produce anything further due to low humidity and terrible lighting they never touch a nepenthes again . Humidity isnt the be all end all but lighting is 😉
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 6 ай бұрын
Yes I agree with your first point - definitely hybrid is the way to go for new growers. Making a video like this aimed at new growers is always going to involve some generalisations - otherwise it would have the opposite effect of what I'm after. For the most part, when compared to other plants grown in the house, Nepenthes are difficult to overwater - and I stand by that statement. Of course, there is always nuance, which would become apparent to anyone who delves into growing the species. And I agree with lighting - all other factors being equal - lighting is key to pitcher production.

I understand that they cannot tolerate tap water. I give my calatheas water from the dehumidifier as they hate tap water. Is this an option or would i need to buy distilled water?
@Grow_Up_Man55

Yes that would be fine - providing of course that your dehumidifier isn’t mouldy. Or rain water if you have a means to collect it.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 unfortunately collecting large quantities of rain water isnt an option to me, but my dehumidifier is definitely very clean! Mouldy plants are sad plants! Xd i have 10 prayer plants so untreated water is already important lol, i tend to think all plants prefer water that isn't chlorinated or full of heavy metals from the pipes but i do prioritize.

I have been thinking about trying one in the spring...They are so weird and cool! I think youve talked me into it. I have been admiring yours for a very long time. What type do you think a beginner should start out with?
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 6 ай бұрын
Do I have a convert??😁 What you should buy depends on what you can source and what your conditions are. For a temperate climate I'd go for a hybrid that has a wide range of temperatures it can cope with. Something like Nep. 'Gaya' or Nep. ventricosa - there are LOADS more which are very tolerant of fluctuating temperatures. Make sure it's labelled as a 'highland' plant. However, if you live in a warm country, or will be keeping it in a room that rarely drops below around 18°C, try a Lowland hybrid.

Yes, you have a convert. I should have said, I'm in the NE US. I first saw them at a botanical garden in Florida, then I began seeing them in the background of your videos and though YOU CAN GROW THOSE AT HOME??? 😂
@cooper9658
@cooper9658 5 ай бұрын
Nepenthes are very easy to grow as long as you set up their growing area correctly and make sure the species/hybrids you're growing have temperature requirements you can meet. And for most nepenthes your conditions don't have to be perfect. Better conditions may cause a plant to grow faster, but most typical hybrids are very forgiving. Long fiber sphagnum moss mixed with perlite for the potting medium, window that gets a decent amount of sunlight or a cheap grow light, distilled water and water regulrly, a pot that has drainage holes, and reasonable humidity (45%+) and most cheaper hybrids will be perfectly happy! When you're sufficiently hooked then you can start dropping big $$$ on grow tents, humidity systems, etc. :)

@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 6 ай бұрын
High humidity just slows them from drying out - but providing you can keep the media moist it's not that big a deal. I used to have a hydro-fogger going day and night - then I simply stopped it. Nothing happened. High humidity might help a bit - but it's not absolutely essential. (The caveat here is that low humidity - say, below around 30% , 'could' cause an issue with some species - but most hybrids are tolerant of a wide range of percentages. Just my opinion of course!)

OK Tim - I take your point. The thing is, there are no absolutes in any plant care, something I'm normally at pains to point out. This video is aimed at those who've never tried to grow Nepenthes, to encourage them to do so - not at the enthusiasts. In my 4 years of growing them, I've never had a single one get root rot, so it's certainly not an easy thing to do, given that I have low temperatures AND high humidity, normally the best combination for encouraging root rot. That's not to say it's impossible - nothing ever is in plant care. I accept I should have said, 'On the balance of probabilities you're not going to over-water them'.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 it's generally a good thing throughout my collection.... Except for the nepenthes 😭 They are also struggling with the cold this winter, it got down to 5°C in the room they're in one night, now showing lots of stressed leaves
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 6 ай бұрын
@@roisinmclaren8475 Yeah I agree for the majority of 'houseplants' - but for Nepenthes it very much depends on which hybrids/species you're growing as to how well they'll take temperatures so low. Also how long they're exposed to it - it terms of individual hours, but also in terms of months. Mine don't go lower than 12°C and are all Highland nepenthes hybrids, so they don't really slow down all that much even through the depths of winter. Take a look at this website: tomscarnivores.com/resources/nepenthes-interactive-guide/ Tom has made a guide for species and hybrids so you can look up your plant (or one you'd like to buy) and see how low in temperature it'll go. Might not help your current plants but worth knowing for the future.
