Being in the U.S. Coast Guard and being stationed on a cutter, if the seas are rocking and rolling or your prone to motion sickness it is best to get a cabin in the lower deck, the higher you are the more swaying you will feel. The next is to get a midship or more in the "middle" of the ship; the more closer you are to the bow or the stern the more you will feel the waves as well going up and down. So remember lower and center is best. So I wish you fellow cruisers fair winds and following seas.

When I first started cruising, I wanted the cheapest rooms & I never had a problem with any cabin, because any day on a cruise is great. That is until until someone took me on a cruise with a balcony & I’ll never have an inside cabin again. There’s nothing like walking out on the balcony first thing in the morning & the last thing at night. Eating a danish & drinking a cup of coffee on the balcony while you’re waking up enough to get dressed to go eat breakfast is the absolute best & it’s worth EVERY SINGLE PENNY!!😀

I so agree with you, especially with itineraries like Alaska, Scandinavia, or the fjords. No sense freezing on deck at places like the glaciers when you can be on your balcony and just step into your cabin for a minute to warm up. 😊🧥🧣🧤 edit for typo

On our last cruise we had a guaranteed cabin and we ended up in the first cabin forward on the fourth floor of the Nieuw Statendam. It was the worst cabin we have ever been in after 30+ cruises. The heavy steel door which led to the Officer’s Bar was right outside our door and as staff came and went to the bar, the door slammed behind them. The staff also were talking very loudly as they passed by, obviously having had a good time. We heard that door slam on average once every five minutes until 2:00 am. At which point I went down to guest services. I was told nothing could be done about it that night but to come back in the morning. Thankfully the next morning at 7:30 am we were changed to a beautiful, mid ship, quiet cabin. I will never purchase a guarantee cabin again…not worth it.

A balcony on VV is the only way to go for me. I'm an early riser, and my husband sleeps in. Every morning, I ordered breakfast, sat in the hammock, and enjoyed quiet moments at sea. We also sat on the balcony late evenings, and there's nothing better than the sound of the waves. We just talked for hours. I even took naps in that hammock! Lol Looking forward to a repeat.

I did a last minute balcony, unassigned until arrival. As a solo and a balcony hey $650 for a 5 day balcony it was worth the risk. Attendant told me bording it was a partially obstructed view. Trying to take pictures and videos looking forward sure was. Looking aft was peachy! I met and hung out with two women a few doors down from me. Their cabin was $2700 booked a year in advance and two passengers. I booked 3 days before departure and all they could do was assure the cabin type. Free at Sea, 4 specialty dining, $100 to shore excursions at every port, it rocked. So what was the horrible obstructed view? Bulkhead support between my cabin and the one forward of me. I was expecting a lifeboat blocking my view. Lol

Solo traveler cabin...dont. I booked one to see what it was like. Shame on me, i didnt realize the "Solo passenger bar and dancing" was 20ft away. Kicked off about 9 went to 2am. I went to customer service the following morning and demand to move. The upgrade cost me $100 but it was a Jr Suite in Haven. Wow...that is unheard of luxury for a person like me. What, no one to feed me grapes and fan me? Those cabins $4000 on up double occupancy.

You mentioned liking aft cabins. I couldn't agree more. If you go with MSC Seascape or Seashore, the definitely go with the aft. The wraparound balcony and layout of everything are simply amazing. They're also right next to the aft facing, glass-walled, elevators - which are amazingly the least used and fastest ones on the ship. That said, next year we're booked on a forward cabin on Seashore. It's the same layout as aft with wraparound balcony with a front and side view. I hope it's not like a rollercoaster ride while we're sleeping. I'm not one who gets seasick, but I don't want there to be a first time.

The worst cabins we ever had- there were 2. One was an adjoining cabin with 2 hearing impaired women beside us. They talked very loudly day and night. We were so annoyed the entire cruise. The other one was on HAL Oosterdam. We booked a guaranteed cabin, and at the time I was having severe mobility problems. The cabin was very far forward away from any elevators. The ship hallways on some of the levels would be obstructed and we had to re- navigate a route to the room. It made for a very unpleasant and uncomfortable experience. I always choose my cabin, and I’m very picky! 😊

I can see where one may not be as happy with the bed closer to it. My last cruise for my husband and I was a guaranteed inside cabin just like the photo on the left side of your video except the beds were pushed together. The Pullman beds made for a very tight squeeze to get in on the side of the bed. We basically shimmied up from the end of the bed so we wouldn’t bump into them. I don’t know why I thought they would be more flush to the wall. The room felt so much smaller because of that lost space. Never again!

I would refuse or try to change any connecting cabin or hotel room unless family is in the connecting room. We had a horror show in a hotel when the party started next door after 10 pm!!! We tried to sleep but the bed was on that wall as well. In the middle of the night, 2 am-ish, someone tried to come through the door, it even sounded like they were trying to break the lock!!! We called the desk and started talking really loudly next to that door that we were calling the police. Gradually the noise next door quieted down. When we checked out in the morning the desk clerk/ manager said when a staffer went to the room that night the tenants said WE were to blame!!!! Never again.

An Infinite Veranda Cabin seems to be a cabin where you have an Ocean View Cabin where uniquely the window opens and unlike an Ocean View Cabin your flooring near the window is not carpeted.

Worst room was on carnival ecstasy it was our honeymoon in 1992. We had a porthole room in the front of the ship that was directly over the ship’s thrusters. Ever Port those were being used to dock the ship. One heck of a wake up call. This was our first cruise and had no idea. We went through a travel agent that didn’t say anything about it.

We had the most forward outside cabin on an older Carnival ship on deck 2, port side. The anchor chain was right in front of this cabin. It was definitely loud when it was deployed in Grand Cayman! Had a lovely porthole though. We laughed and enjoyed our cruise anyway.

There's almost always a room next door unless you have an end room, then what are you going to hear, people walking by or on stairs? The fact there are connecting rooms is less desirable than a window that is blocked & a bunk above your bed is crazy! There are connecting doors making them connecting rooms all the time in hotels, it's not a problem. Even if there is no connecting doors, one on each side, you can still hear people in the next room. 🚢

I actually like the connecting cabin because the door makes a great metal place to put the wall hanger (shoe rack). The connecting door is clean metal so the magnets have a stronger hold.

The cruise planner once booked our cabin above a lounge. At 0430 one day the band decided to practice. A trip to guest services later that morning ended the practice sessions for the remainder of the trip. We now make certain our cabin is sandwiched between 2 passenger decks!

@bobettern I think of any tip worth sharing regarding cabin selection, between two passenger decks is THE most important one. Fairly easy to do that on all of our Celebrity cruises, but found it a little more challenging choosing our cabin on Royal Caribbean. Found a great mid-ship balcony cabin, though, so all was well. My favorite stateroom is a sunset veranda at the very back of the ship; sadly, none were available that trip. Yes, it's a hike, but the size of the veranda and the view are well worth it to me. 🌊🌊🌊

We have twice booked interior rooms that were at the end of a row. One we were told was at a bend in the waste lines so when there were clogs they had to open the wall outside our room releasing sewer odor right next to our door. The other we were under the galley for the buffet and the last 2 days of the cruise the odor from the grease trap was getting into the room.

The only time I had any issue with a cabin was on The Elation, which is a smaller ship. We were near the front of the ship, in January, and it was fairly rocky. I was still recovering from eye surgery, so that probably had a lot to do with it, but I definitely had to keep up on the Dramamine. Still, I didn’t actually get sick, and we had an awesome time.

The worst cabin I had was on my first cruise on Song of Norway Christmas of 1993. Had an inside cabin with bed up against wall. I had to climb over my husband to get out of bed. Lighting was bad and no closet just a bar to hang things. My favorite room is a handicap room, more room area and a walk in shower. Only twice in the 27 yrs I have cruised were my husband and I given a handicap room.

My sister had a cabin that had a post (some type of support beam) at the end of the bed. She was afraid of getting up during the night and walking into the post. Her husband is tall and his feet reached the end of the bed and touched the beam at night. We joked that she could perform a pole dance. This was not mentioned in the cabin description.

We booked room 12329 on oasis, which is the last interior balcony room, at the rear of the ship, overlooking boardwalk. Great content! As for the Infinite balcony we have a hold on one right now on deck 9 mid ship port side zero obstruction in a prime Aqua Class on Celebrity Asent we are trying to decide if we want to try it out or a different cabin being on a edge class ( our first sailing on a edge class ship) for October 20th 2025 out of Rome Italy for 11 nights in Europe. We are trying to get a good cabin for rest relaxing and a few amenities we like since it's a 11 night cruise. So we are willing to give the Infinite veranda a try possibly since we have another cruise booked on Ascent for mid March 2026 again for 11 nights to the Panama Canal and Southern Caribbean. We booked a Aqua Sky Suite on deck 10 port side for this and obviously it does come with a true balcony and it will be our first experience with being in a suite and all the amenities it comes with. Thank you again for sharing.

One more thing we had a forward facing balcony on liberty and it had the rounded glass on the balcony and actually it made that slightly larger so we were very happy with that! The worst is always when you’re not sandwiched by state rooms. There’s always going to be noise.!!

Agree with the connecting rooms. Had a connecting room one time and heard the next room playing music 24/7. Dude literally stayed in his room the entire cruise, for whatever reason, and played music. Not necessarily crazy loud, but noises travel thru those doors very easily.

We've done a balcony and a suite on deck 15 forward below the gym on Caribbean Princess. We heard chairs being put out, UT don't sleep that late anyhow. We've also done 2 full aft suites and an aft side mini. I found the vibration and up/down more annoying than the up/down forward. Mostly, we are always in minis center/center near the elevator and love it. I was in an obstruction ov re entry and thought I'd hate it. It was okay.

I was on the Edge last year with an infinite balcony. I do NOT like that style balcony. I felt that I was still inside the cabin. I very much prefer a standard balcony and use it every day on a cruise. We prefer the bed next to the balcony. I enjoy the quiet of the ocean, but hubby likes to take a nap in bed. So we can talk until he (or we) fall asleep. Also, he only partially unpacks and keeps his carry-on on or next to the sofa, which is more convenient near the closet and bathroom.

I am in a wrong cabin right now. We are in an 11 day cruce to Alaska and back to San Francisco. My cabin is a balcony cabin in Baja deck 201 (deck 11) is one of the furthest cabins forward…from there to the buffet is a 950 ft to the rear…maybe 900 ft to the last elevator to the Horizon buffet. Not only that, all the other places a far like the atrium, we are using room service for our breakfast to save a long walk.

Last year I was on ships on three different cruise lines (Saga, Oceania and Viking). On the first two I was given cabins with connecting doors and was very anxious about the potential for noise. Happily, it was never a problem in more than 5 weeks onboard. In fact, on the Saga ship, I initially thought there was no one in the cabin next door.

Just booked a guaranteed obstructed ocean view cabin because it was just $100 more than an inside cabin. Saw some photos of this kind of cabin on this ship, and the obstructions are mostly lifeboats. Looks like it will have a walking deck right outside. I was mostly wanting a little natural light - inside cabins can be VERY dark. For a view, I'll go outside. But I'm a bit worried about noise.

On Wonder of the Seas our family had 3 cabins. Balcony on the water, below pool deck seating area - great! - Balcony on Central Park, deck 15 below kids play area. Noisy all afternoon with music, quiet at night, so no naps. - Balcony on the sea just below the Mason Jar. On (3) nights they had music until 1am, then clean up of the floors after. So much noise we couldn't sleep! Avoid being below the Mason Jar. Also for this 3rd room, the smoking area was up the stairs and our room aligned with the stairs (midship). Each time we entered the hall we smelled smoke. We are not smokers.
