There are several foods that should never be given to children under 4 years of age because they present a significant choking hazard. One of the most common situations where these foods are introduced without parents realizing the risk is baby led weaning, though it can happen regardless of the method used to introduce solids.
In this video I walk through the 7 foods that present a high risk of choking in babies and infants up to 4 years of age. These foods are really common, and often surprise parents when they're told about the risk.
I hope this video helps you choose the best food options for your little one after watching!

When I was six y.o, I had a full peanut stuck in my lungs. I was eventually sent to the hospital. As it was 30 years ago, it was a big deal in terms of medical help. After that event, it was easy for me to have flu for some time. Food is not a toy! Please require your child to sit down, calm down and concentrate. It’s no joke.

I am so sorry you went through that. It would have been very scary! Great advice about sitting down and concentrating when eating food! It is so important to get the child to sit down while eating and take their time to properly chew the food before swallowing!

I wish I had seen this months ago. My husband was eating an apple and gave to our baby under 12 months to get a bite. She got a couples bites and chocked. It was a terrible experience! I hugged and kissed her so much after she went through it and started breathing again… I still cried many times when I remembered this episode. Thank God she’s fine and we don’t give her anything we are eating anymore. Just her baby food I make blending steamed vegetables with water in a Baby Bullet.

I need to add a warning to everyone that you should be wary of display foods, like fruit bowls. My friends lost their 5 yo when he took some grapes from a fruit bowl he managed to reach. They will never be the same again. I just can't look at a grape anymore without him coming to mind. It's one of those dangers hiding in plain sight.

My little one is almost 8 months and still has no teeth. Choking has always been one of my biggest fears and whenever someones coughs while eating I get a chill down my spine and sometimes get a bit nauseous. The thought of my baby choking on anything gave me anxiety before she even started eating and she´s only eating purés at this point. Very much appreciate these videos Emma so I can introduce and give my baby good foods in a safe way :)

Niemals unbeaufsichtigt essen lassen.

I worked at a daycare for 2 and a half weeks. I was hired for the preK room and I was liking it there. Then they moved me to the toddler area. They asked me what I thought and I was mentioned that choking hazards shouldn't accessible to this age. They told me I didn't know what I was talking about. They told me those kids better just learn to keep their hands off the choking hazards. (broken pieces to something sitting on a bookshelf and sensory bins full of bins that the kids could get into without an adult taking it out for them.) Then I mentioned that this age should not have raw carrots. They said "says who???" to me. To which I replied that it's in the NAEYC handbook. They told me that they were members even though the daycare was not accredited. (Yah so am I, did they not notice that on my resume?). I get random parents not knowing this stuff, but states aren't even making sure daycare directors know this stuff.

I would highly recommend solid starts as a resource for any parent starting solids. They break down and provide visuals for how to cut/serve lots of types of foods. Solid starts has feeding therapists and other baby/toddler experts on staff so it's reviewed by lots of people who know their stuff! They even talk about how to safely introduce high risk foods because you don't want your kid to be introduced to it outside of your care! Also apples are usually cut in wedges which makes it even more dangerous! A whole apple is actually way less of a risk! Thanks Emma for this informative video!

I literally ate all of these foods except whole nuts, seeds, popcorn, and candy before I was 2 years old. I always thought it was common sense to cut up ALL non-pureed solid food to tiny pieces to feed to your baby, toddler, or young child. Like why would you let a 1-year-old bite into a hard fruit or a full-size hotdog when they only have like four teeth?? Do some parents really not think about these things??

One of my friends who’s a nurse allows her toddler chew big carrot sticks independently and says it’s good for her to do so. I asked if she’s not worried that she can choke on the carrot. And she said it’s normal for light choking sometimes and that it helps their development to chew food properly….am I missing something? Why is their an opposite teaching on this? I still don’t take the chance though especially since my toddler once choked on an apple and it scared me too much. Thanks for the video!

For an adult 50 gram processed meat (a half hotdog) per day increases cancer risk by approx. 20%. Including the high salt and saturated fat content males it just the worst food availabe.

Hi Emma, firstly thank you so much for such an important video on this topic. I think it's important to emphasise though that round, soft foods like hot dogs and grapes and blueberries etc should be cut into quarters if given, it's not enough to just tell people to cut them into small pieces. There's a little clip of someone cutting sausages into smaller pieces in your video, but they're still a big hazard that way because they're cylindrical, so the clip is very misleading, and I don't think I heard you say to cut them into quarters. Any cylindrical shape is a choking hazard for babies, no matter the size. Whoever edits your videos should remove that clip of the sausage being cut. x

Hello! I hope this helps! DO NOT preform these steps if the infant is coughing hard or has a strong cry. Strong coughs and cries can help push the object out of the airway. If your child is not coughing forcefully or does not have a strong cry, follow these steps: Lay the infant face down, along your forearm. Use your thigh or lap for support. Hold the infant's chest in your hand and the jaw with your fingers. Point the infant's head downward, lower than the body. Give up to 5 quick, forceful blows between the infant's shoulder blades. Use the palm of your free hand. If the object does not come out of the airway after 5 blows: Turn the infant face-up. Use your thigh or lap for support. Support the head. Place 2 fingers on the middle of the breastbone just below the nipples. Give up to 5 quick thrusts down, compressing the chest one third to one half the depth of the chest. Continue 5 back blows followed by 5 chest thrusts until the object is dislodged or the infant loses alertness (becomes unconscious). IF THE INFANT LOSES ALERTNESS If the child becomes unresponsive, stops breathing, or turns blue: Shout for help. Give infant CPR. Call 911 or the local emergency number after 1 minute of CPR. If you can see the object blocking the airway, try to remove it with your finger. Try to remove an object only if you can see it.

Hello! I have a 9 month old and have been doing Baby Led Weaning (BLW) since 6 months! My daughter just recently broke through 2 bottom teeth. But I definitely recommend looking it up! It’s amazing how well they do on their own! Just make sure to know the safety precautions in order to take if the child chokes. My daughter choked on watermelon at 8 months due to them not being cut correctly and took a bigger bite then expected. But remember gagging is completely normal for babies while eating! Also pretending to chew and showing my daughter REALLY has helped with her chewing her food. Best of luck! Oh and you can always add water and mush anything if you don’t feel comfortable!! ❤

@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
Hi Suma, it's hard to give you a solution as there could be many reasons your little one is waking during the night for a bottle feed. It's important to work out why your little one is waking during the night. Your little one might be waking during the night for feeds because that is how she has learnt to fall asleep. If that is the case then you will need to gradually reduce the amount of milk your little one is getting through the bottle to gradually stop the bottle, while she increases the amount she eats in the day. And if your little one continues to wake when you have reduced the bottle feeds then you will you will need to switch out that bottle with another sleep association which is something you can fade. For example, you might swap the bottle with patting your baby while she she is in the cot. If your little one needs a feed to fall asleep for all feeds then helping her learn how to fall asleep without a feed will help. There are lots of sleep training methods which do not have to include letting your little one cry. So if it is something you want to do with your little one just choose the method which works for you and your family. I hope that helps!

Mine got her first two teeth at 4 months and she now has 12 teeth at 13 months old. And she already has 2 top molars coming in. Which is good because she’s been on solids since 5 months old (purées, but now actual solids) and she wants to try everything and gets very mad if I’m eating something she can’t have, lol. She gets lots of squished blueberries. She will eat them all day if I’d let her. 😆

@@KeraJaay Yes! Nuts are an allergy and can be given in smoothie if baby isn’t allergic but honey unfortunately shouldn’t be given since a baby is at serious risk of getting infant botulism. Babies under 6 months of age are at the highest risk. While this condition is rare, most of the cases reported are diagnosed in the United States. A baby can get botulism by eating Clostridium botulinum spores found in soil, honey, and honey products. So it’s best to wait until baby is a year. ❤️😁

Wow, we’ve been giving our baby whole raw apples, blueberries and cherry tomatoes since 10 months old. No problems so far, but good to keep in mind. Not sure how to cut a blueberry into quarters, though, as they’re already pretty small!

Giving a pacifier to baby reduces SIDS by 72%! ❤ If you are breast feeding i recommend using your breasts as a paci it will also build your supply. If bottle feeding I would recommend giving paci during any sleep! ❤️

I use stock footage to visually represent the things I’m taking about, as this often helps the viewer more than simply watching me talk. This stock footage is existing footage that we licence from 3rd party providers. Just to clarify, we didn’t give these foods to babies and film it for the video. Hope that helps 🙂
