About the Śmigus Dyngus, it's not actually just a "folk thing". We still do that, at least I've never met someone who doesn't do that. We love pouring water on each other on Easter Monday, especially between siblings and friends. You should watch out though, while going out on Easter Monday, because you can still get VERY wet randomly on the street. People just pour water on other people, that's the thing, so usually during Easter Monday there are no people walking on pavements

In my town there is unwritten rule to ask elder people first if you can pour water on them. Also you can do this only before noon. Pour water on someone afternoon is tactless here.

As for celebrating name day, it's so popular because Poland is traditionally a catholic country. In Catholic Church, for each day there is a particular saint (or more), that is remembered and praised specially on that day. And because most of the children used to be named after saints, the day of their patron - "the day of their name" - was celebrated, often as even more important than birthday. I hope that makes sense😉
@nadajniczek

It's popular in maybe 50% of Poland - some areas on the east and some areas on the west where people from the further east were forced to live after the WWII. I personally don't like the name day - it's like celebrating a day of thousand another people. It's leveling down the individuality ;)

In Sławomir Koper's book (he's a historian and he wrote plenty books on the Second Polish Republic's history) I've read that the Name Day was purposefully made to be more popular than Birthday. Because Birthday came with German culture and people during the partitions were trying to distance themselves from that. So during the partitions up to the Interwar period and later Name Days were celebrated a little bit more to oppose the Germanic influence.

Śmigus dyngus was also a great fun in 90s in Warsaw. Imagine group of kids armed with water guns and bottles fighting against another groups. Every year the base was in the house of another person. When "ammo" was refilled we were caming back to the battlefield (like a park or playground). Gosh, good memories. These days I don't see any kids playing on Lany Poniedziałek. They have no idea what they are missing.

Śmingus dyngus this is a very old custom. Formerly stags were looking for brides with red beads around their necks, which symbolized their desire to get married. Pouring water over them was symbolic and heralded a quick marriage. it is a tradition associated with Mazovia. It doesn't matter that much in our time. Everyone will be covered with water.

Trevor, you refer to Malbork castle:): it was built by the Teutonic Knights. It is fascinating. The Teutonic Knights (Krzyzacy) were brought to Poland by one of the princes to fight with pagan tribes (the prince was Konrad Mazowiecki); they were given land on which they built their castle...and more. They grew in power so much that they became a threat; they were defeated by King Wladyslaw Jagiello at Grunwald (Europe refers to it as Tannenberg). Polish Nobel Prize Laureate for Literature Henryk Sienkiewicz wrote a novel titled "Krzyzacy"; director Alexander Ford made a film based on the novel in 1960.

So interesting to know your opinion about my homeland! A few comments: 1. You make a very good point about the variety in a (relatively) small package. This is something many people don't realize 2. There is photographic material and video footage of the wartime damage of Warsaw and other towns. Some of it is available on KZfaq. A real eye-opener! 3. I cannot be absolutely sure, but I think Smigus-Dyngus is a pre-Christian fertility ritual. Hmmm... 4. My American mother used to say that name-days are an insane institution. Some names have more than one patron saint, so you have to know which name-day the person celebrates. My name has, I believe, three name-days. I celebrate the one one on March 13th, if you want to know. The person in question is not usually going to tell you. You have to scope it out. Also, he or she is not going to invite you to celebrate but simply set out the booze and cake and wait. God help you if you don't show up because you didn't know! And you are right, Trevor (a Celtic name, I think?) does not have a name-day, unless you discover that there was, in fact, a Saint Trevor and find out which date is dedicated to him. 5. As a matter of fact, the ONLY time Malbork Castle was ever taken was in 1945, by the Soviets, who used "Katyusha" rocket launchers. As a child in the 1950s, I visited the place many times because my family lived in Sopot. I remember that a large part of the castle was in ruins. Even in the 1960s, sight-seers were prohibited from going around without a guide because some areas were still dangerous. I remember having to explain to my American relatives (who started visiting about that time) that this prohibition was not some devious Communist plot to prevent them from seeing something they shouldn't but simply to prevent them from breaking their necks or encountering an unexploded missile.
