Very happy to see How to Make Friends and Influence People in the list! I’m trying to become a firefighter after getting my BS in mechanical engineering and am reading this book rn. So many good stories and examples that put that book into perspective. Highly recommend to read more than once so it becomes part of your mindset. It will do yourself and everyone around you so much good. Thank you for your videos!

If you haven't come across them, I found these two books very informative." Fire Crew" is by a wildland firefighter, telling the story of his 6 or 7 years with DNR. "The Fire Outside My Window" is a great book about wild fire from a victim's perspective. Both are well-written, and make the reader think about the fire service from new perspectives. I enjoy your videos, and find them informative. Bill in Renton

I'm going through the hiring process of my city's fire department. I highly encourage you all to read. I bought the book "Firefighter Exams" to prepare myself for the hiring process. It really has helped me. But what i want to leave behind is that when i met the Chief of the fire department here he asked me "what are you doing to prepare to be a firefighter" i told him the truth about the book i was reading and following all the tips on studying, exercising, and even how to behave and act as a firefighter. The Chief was impressed by my response that he said, "I wish I could give uou the job right now. You're preparing yourself for the actual academy not just the hiring process." Obviously i need to complete and pass the rest of the hiring process, but thanks to reading the appropriate books the chief already knows me as a candidate.

I would suggest Dennis Smith Report From Engine 82 and his Report From Ground Zero. The latter I believe is the authority on the sacrifice made of those in the FDNY that day.

Awesome recommendations. I would also suggest “What Brothers Do” by Michael Everett Brown, about the legendary Captain Patrick Brown of the FDNY, killed on 9/11. A portrait of a truly heroic man.

It’s always good to see someone I respect (Mike) endorsing other guys I respect, whose books I’ve read (Goggins-who just put out another book-Pressfield, and Peterson). I grew up with Carnegie, though I’m sure it’s worth revisiting as an adult. There’s a significant (or at least noisy) faction against Jordan Peterson, but I believe that if one applies the rules he outlines, they will become more confident, accountable, and productive, which will enable them to be more useful, positive and generous. Those who would silence him either aren’t listening to him, or actually wish for others to remain physically and mentally weak and lethargic, just as they are.

Hey I don’t know if you’d be open to this, but I really could use help with the IFSTA 7 book. We’re rocking through fire dynamics (a 70 page chapter) right now at academy, and I’m having trouble identifying what information will be the most important. Thanks as always!

Cant Hurt Me is my #1 recommendation. Its kinda newer so its not as well known. David Goggin’s story is amazing though. Best life/leadership/“self-help”/discipline/control/ whatever else you call these, book ive ever read. I think its more impactful because it isnt as instructional as 12 Rules For Life. The author is mostly recounting his life story and the big points where he became great. Guy also became a wildand firefighter as well!

I have a really hard time with goggins. Seems to be just a bit.. much? I did read the book, it was a good one. I just think I heard/read too much about his career and the communities he pissed off through the course of it.

@@hicksonff3459 what do you mean “much?” He cusses, but thats pretty all someone can do to piss people off or make then feel uncomfortable. If you mean his online community, “Goggins Clips,” then yeah I agree that its “much.” Its pretty basic and generic “dOnT bE a pUsSy” BS that anyone can say. Its just stupid really. His inspiration is in his life story, not the small dumb quotes the Clips page posts sometimes. The podcasts are great too if youre new to him. I have ADD. I cant read. Without the podcasts I wouldn’t have read Goggin’s book. Best book ever. Just conpleted SEALFIT 20X several hours ago. I feel amazing. Hoo-yah fellow firefighter.

@@grantwalter2243 I think moreso I meant his own communities. Not that I have any actual knowledge so it’s basically just listening to guys like Jocko talk about the team mentality and in contrast goggins talk about his personal battle and growth/achievement. Who really knows what the guy is like. I agree his story is wild, I just can’t imagine being on a crew with the guy. I think he would piss everyone off on a daily basis with his bravado style/over the top alpha. As far as cussing.. I cannot judge there nor can most firefighters haha. Cheers brother 🤘🏼

Question I want to join the Military, but at the same time I want to be a fire fighter. I was stressing a few seeing and reading all about EMT since school's are far from were I live. Like I literally need a car. As I kept searching I run into an army fire fighter channel on KZfaq. Will going for this reserve or active duty help me later on once I'm out of the military work in a local fire department?

Firefighting MOS is ok. Yes you'll learn you won't get fire 1 and 2 or emt for the outside world. Honestly most departments didn't care as far as points go. That MOS has limited promotions. I wouldn't reccomend. I had a DS in basic ranger supper airborne. Only an e5 all of this was things he said.

I am a recruit for my local fire department going through training to be a paid volunteer there. It won't be much longer before I am able to come on for full shifts and am in a position to work my job schedule around the fd. My question is, is it possible to volunteer too often? I aim to volunteer at the fd at least 3 shifts a week and want to know if this will come off in any negative way
@danieltakawi9919

I personally am not a firefighter, but I don't think it could come off as a negative. On the contrary, volunteering often will help the community and the station greatly. However, you need to be wise and not over work yourself.
