@@bostonrailfan2427 One problem, is at least with our water, after a couple of years, the inside surfaces of the silicone trays get 'etched' by the hard water, and are no longer non stick. I'd rather have the old metal trays that last, well, forever than have to keep replacing my ice cube trays. no reason to fill up the ocean with plastic ice cube trays that no one will use once put into the recycling bin.

The hexagonal prism tray was hard to get the ice out of because it was rubber. All rubber ice trays are like that. Plus, who ever needs all the ice at the same time? It's more convenient to be able to remove one ice at a time than have all the ice fall out when you're trying to get a few pieces for a water bottle.
@SDM17RG

When he said the hexagon tray was difficult to get them all out, I laughed. Who would need that many at one time? Only for special events, but even then.

They're easy to get out if you use a little bit of brain power. After you hit the bottom on the counter, with the lid still in place, flip it upside down on the counter and push on the bottom. Flip it, take the top off and pour them out.

He missed the point on the honeycomb one. Most people don't take the ice cubes out all at once, they individually take one out for a drink and this is perfect for that because you individually push the base out of each one while the others stay inside.

@starrysock
@starrysock 5 жыл бұрын
but... you can easily take just one icecube out of the others too? Just hold them right side up when you crack them so they don't fall out. Icecubes stay in place and you're free to just pick them up with your hands, or if you really need to, dump all at once. Never heard of a person who struggled with taking one icecube out of a normal tray The hexagon one isn't perfect either. A bunch still fell out when he turned it over so it's not like you can just hold it upsidedown and push them out one by one, because they're probably going to spill

Shoot, I've got my grandma's old trays. They last forever. Could you tell the difference between the old ones and a brand new one? In fact, I've also got her even older ones that required a hook-like thing that released the ice, 2 cubes at a time (it works kind of similar to the handle he pulled on his metal one, but doesn't release the whole tray at once) . That said, I like my trays similar to his dollar store ones best, and am only saving the metal ones for the antique sale value someday. My hands hate the metal ones now, but I did use the metal ones until a couple years ago, when my carpal tunnel started acting up.

The stainless steel tray is one you have to know how to use. You are supposed to run water over it and then use the handle release and it will work perfectly well. By far the best of the bunch in my honest opinion. I miss that contraption of the past except the older ones were made out of aluminum. Many of the kitchen contraptions were made out of aluminum in the past.

We always had to run water over the tray, wait and then commence to fighting to get the ice out. The honeycomb one is perfect for storing excess fresh herbs. Put them in water, freeze and you always have that fresh taste available. The fact they don't come out easily is an advantage if you only want to pop out one herb. The icenator is also great if you want ice on hand to soak your feet.

The silicone trays like the hexagon shaped one would empty easier if they didn't make the walls of the individual ice cube area 90 degrees. Have them angled to a little more of a "V" shape and it would help a lot. Just like the OXO and dollar store models. More angle = easier to get the cubes out of the tray.

Nice review, just about icecube trays, but they are a thing so it had to be done :-) About OXO, I work in the medical field and they design their gears for people with disabilities or lower stress on hands and joins. The ice tray seems to follow that same principle. Covered to avoid spill for people that have trouble staying stable, and zero effort emptying for the same reason. I have their salad spinner and it's honestly terrific for drying off produce. For science I threw a wet rag in there for a spin and was pretty surprised at how much water it got out. It's also really easy to clean, and the giant button is kinda fun to mess with. I don't buy all OXO, since they're 7/10 for pretty much everything and I can often find a better brand for individual items, but if I don't care to dig through reviews or just want to quickly grab something at the store OXO is pretty reliable.

@Roonasaur

I bought a pair of silicone ice trays not long ago . . . the thing doesn't have a raised lip around the outside, so I'm always spilling when filling. And the ice chambers are using a common wall, so there's not nearly as much play to twist the thing and get them to pop out as you would think with silicone. Furthermore, the water would expand irregularly into the flexible walls, meaning that the cubes would bulge into the neighboring pockets and make removal difficult. Each cube fit into the next like a key into a lock. And - as if that weren't enough - with no void space between cubes, just the one silicone wall, there wasn't enough play in the tray to get air in behind the cubes, so they got held in by suction. I literally had to push and pull each cube out individually. I went back to my cracked, leaking dollar store tray after just one batch. :/

13:50 ... To be fair not every one wants all the ice out at one time, some people like to use a few cubes at a time and leave the rest in the tray and just have two trays, one for use and one for freezing while the other gets low, Silicon molds are great for that purpose since you can easily control how many you get out at a time and don't accidentally dump the entire thing onto your counter when all you wanted was 4 cubes for your drink. Between all the ones in that video if I didn't have an ice maker in my fridge I would have 2-3 of the dollar store ones and 1-2 of a silicon mold one, the 2-3 cheap ones for when I have people over and need more ice at once, then the 1-2 silicon mold ones for normal use for just myself when I want a few cubes and not a full tray. I have a pumpkin and skull shaped ice trays that are silicon that both make small cubes that work perfect, I think my sister got them from a dollar store during a Halloween. That's just personal preference, then again when I get drinks from fast food I either ask for no ice or light ice, I am not a big ice person.

Yeeees! I hate dumping the entire 20 cubes onto my counter, floor and glass and having to pick up cubes that slide to the other side of the kitchen before it will let you touch them

The oxo is good for this with the rounded bottoms. You just push on one side of the cube and they rotate up for ease of access.

I'm in Northern Michigan, all I have to do is go outside in the winter months and my drink will stay cold lol. I think the simplest design is the best design. Others are cool but just can't go wrong with the dollar store one.

The water bottle ones sound like a good idea until it falls out and hits the back of your throat while you are drinking. That sucks.

If its a hot day, they'll probably melt long before they become an issue when you're drinking. Also you could always just stick your tongue in front of the hole to prevent the ice from getting into your mouth.

I'm amazed that the design that existed when I was a kid and was a major pain getting ice out of is the most expensive. The plastic "twist and flip" trays were such a game changer when they came out.

I can't believe I watched a 16.10 second video on Ice cube trays LOL!! Well done!! I actually have 2 old school (some kind of metal) tray with the lever (yard sale find) like that $29.00 one! I hate them now because it's a work out to pull that lever and they finally warped and can not be stacked.

Dude, you took them all out of the freezer at the same time, then marveled at how the 5th one released the cubes so easily.. They've been melting for several minutes. Of course they just, "fall right out"!!!! Cool video!
