Let’s talk about plastic. This always comes up with videos like this so I wanted to cover some things for those of you who may have concerns about using plastic in growing food. Plastic isn’t great. That’s true. We personally have been making strides in our household to eliminate as much waste as possible. Not only are studies showing that plastic can be unhealthy over time for those using it (especially consuming food and drink from it), there is the glaring truth that humanity cannot hope to carry on filling landfills at the breakneck speed we have been. So, if that’s my take, why would I suggest something like a plastic pool to grow food in? Because, I genuinely think the gain outweighs the risk. Here’s why:First, lets talk about health. I DO NOT suggest you use one of the floppy inflatable pools to grow food in. Those are largely made of PVC and are the highest off gassing plastic currently on the market. When exposed to heat (which obviously, pools are), they can release endocrine disrupting phthalates, and they really aren’t a great choice at all, even to let your kids swim in. The cheapo hard plastic pools like the one I used in this video are typically made of low density polyethelyne (LDPE), also called #4 plastic. If you have a recycling facility that will process plastics, this is one that is more commonly recycled. It is also one that is considered lower risk and safe to use. It’s the same plastic milk cartons and water bottles are often made of, as well as the little hard shell containers baby salad greens and disappointing store tomatoes are sold in. Could there still be risk of leeching? Maybe. But my humble opinion is that if I grow tomatoes, peppers, herbs and radishes in a plastic pool in my yard, and those plants make a 50 foot journey to my kitchen, where they will be consumed by my family NEVER having come in contact with processing facility, equipment, or packaging and NEVER having used a drop of fuel to transport or grow and NEVER having come in contact with any chemical pesticide or fertilizers…..isn’t that better in the big picture? This is why I choose to use reclaimed materials like metal in my garden beds and things like cheap plastic containers to grow. Because honestly, it’s what I can afford to do and I have to believe that, in the long run, its better to grow resourcefully than to throw my hands up and not grow at all. Thanks for listening to this little spill. I hope it gives you peace if you weren’t sure about this decision.

Jess, my son has picked me up several of these kid pools over the years free by people throwing them away. We've grown strawberries, dill, parsley, radishes, spinach, and asparagus in them so far. I also have my kids old turtle sand box and we grow cucumbers in it every year on a trellis. We just amend the soil each year. I'm a disabled widow on a low income so I just use whatever we can find. We also garden in an old tractor tire, old car tire, cattle feed containers, totes, lots of five gallon buckets, a broken Rubbermaid mop bucket, an old trash can, & 55 gallon barrels cut in half. We may not get garden/yard of the year but at least we have fresh veggies.

I headed a research project in college which had the goal of bringing affordable produce to urban food deserts through gardening and we tested all kinds of container gardens (I even grew onions on a blanket with no soil using a wicking system!) but these kiddie pools as raised beds as well as as a hydroponic system (using gravel and a five gallon buckets drip feeding the system) was by far our most successful! One tip though, especially if you live in dryer climates, don’t drill holes in the bottom of the pool, drill them in the sides about 1.5 inches from the bottom. This will create a reservoir in the bottom and allow for less frequent watering and will keep the bed from getting too wet.

Can you imagine a few pools in different colors, flower pots in different colors and all kinds of plants. It would be an exquisite blast of visual happiness!

I'm thinking PIZZA GARDEN! Divide it up in slices, each slice growing a different pizza ingredient--bell peppers, dwarf tomatoes, basil, onions, etc.

As a senior citizen I have a kiddie pool on top of a large discarded spool from local electric company. No bending. Great option for me. At end of season these pools are much cheaper which is also an option.

An idea to cut the cost of the soil-if you can plan ahead from the fall, fill the pool with fall leaves (maybe chopped with the lawnmower), the dirt from any potted annual plants, collect anything (even vege clippings) that will happily decompose over the winter and I'm betting you'd be able to reduce the cost of the soil in the pool. See where you are in the spring and buy soil to top off all the natural stuff you've already composted in the pool.

I used a plastic shoe organizer for herbs. Hang it in the fence. Punched holes in each pocket

I picked up some “raised bed garden soil” open bags at Lowe’s for $1 each last week. You gave me the perfect idea 💡 thank you being a great human. And your thoughts on the plastic is so accurate.

Want it mobile? Add castor wheels! Buy a piece of cheap, thin plywood and roughly cut it to the size of the pool's inside bottom. Drill your drainage holes through both the wood and the plastic, and flip it over. Put at least 4, maybe 5 castor wheels on the underside of the pool, using some hardware like washers to keep them anchored well to the wood. You'll want to space them out evenly around the outer edge and maybe put one in the middle if it's a larger pool. (The wood is supposed to provide support and help with the sagging!) Then flip it back upright and fill with dirt and plants! Voila! Mobile mini garden! I plan to roll mine into my garage when the first big snowfall hits, here in upper NY.

I've been growing in these for years now. I've done peppers, broccoli, salad greens, watermelon, the list goes on. It was way cheaper than buying the large raised bed smart pots. They hold up well over winter as well. My first pools is about three years old now and still going strong.

My husband almost brought my sons' kiddie pool to the dump yesterday because it has some holes in it. Glad I told him to wait! I'm going to give it a second life now =)

Hehe you wouldn’t believe it but now with the pandemic on, I had earmarked a raised bed to get, the next day sold out ... so I bought 2 kids pools 4ft x 4ft 🙌 ... you my friend are a superstar! Thank you for the great suggestion

Being a sr. living on ssi aka uncle sam crumbs 😆, but also being a country girl & wanting to garden & give my grandkids that knowledge along with fresh food, I have to do it on the cheap. Since I'm starting my first garden with them this yr. it's quite costly. I can put sooo many more plants in a $7 pool than I can in one $5-6 5 gallon bucket. Thanks so much for this $ saving idea. Oh yeah, my grandson said to thank you for cutting down on his lawn mowing duties. 😆

When I was a kid, my mom took our old kiddie pool and cut the entire bottom off, scalped the grass with the weed eater and added compost/soil to the pool and grew strawberries in it for several years.

Great information Jess. You can also make bags out of dog food bags! A layer of straw in the bottom of the pool will save on the amount of soil you need. It will compost.

The kiddie pool is a great idea. Just a tip. Walmart had a "end of the season" sale on these little pools. I was able to pick up 2 at $3.00 each. I used them as a pool for my dogs to enjoy. They ended up being small ponds with hyacinths. :-)

Storage tub gardening tip: They are usually pretty deep and will use quite a bit of soil to fill. I have a lifetime supply of leaves at my house. I also could have a 3 acre garden if I wanted to but but my land holds water and doesn't drain efficiently, so you can wait quite a while for it dry up. So I container garden. Fill the storage tubs with leaves first...all the way to the top. Then put you soil on top of the leaves. The solid will weigh it down and you're looking for about a 50/50 leaf/soil ratio. Don't mix them..just leaves on the bottom and soil on top! The leaves will naturally start to compost down during the growing season and when growing season is over, I dump all the contents of the tubs into my compost pile and start over. I have 2 piles, one currently composting and one that is ready to use. So I basically reuse everything year after year! This method really cuts down on the amount of planting soil you have to buy. I usually buy a bag of good potting soil (preferably one that's made for container gardening but it's not necessary), a bag of garden soil and a bag of manure fertilizer soil and mix it all together! Do this mixture until you get all your containers filled. If you start composting, even on a small scale, you will only need to invest in the store bought soil 1 time. After that you will will be reusing and making your own soil from that point forward!

I've been growing in kiddie wading pools since 2009! Over time I've decided that they are really ideal for growing sunflowers, zinnias, and strawberries, but I like the idea of growing greens or herbs in them. Last year I made a presentation on growing strawberries in wading pools for two Master Gardener events. I have used bags of potting soil and compost to fill the pools in the past, but now I make my own "Mel's Mix" to fill the pools. The cost for a potting soil and compost mix is just over $3.50 per cubic foot and for homemade Mel's Mix is about $4.75 per cubic foot. The good thing is that "Perlite is Forever". Once you buy Perlite or vermiculite and use it in a mix, you do not have to replenish it. Peat only needs to be replenished every few years. Add a bag or two of compost every time you replant the bed, or add a few handfuls of compost when you add a new plant. The kiddie pool is bloody brilliant. I've got an idea. I feed feral cats and noticed the bags are like woven plastic. I've got 16 lb and 32 lb. Another thing to keep in mind is that you can get free pallets everywhere (Craigslist too) and putting them under your container will improve air flow, drainage, and most importantly ---->>> your back.

I've lived in a yard where the landlord had put all rocks on one side and mulch on the other side of the lawn. I got multiple plastic storage totes for free on Craigslist over time. Some with cracks already in them which was perfect for me! I've grown plants in them for about 5 years. Knowing that our house was an old tear down, I was quite happy that I was able to move most of those containers to my new place and incorporate some of the lively plants/soil and friendly insects that I had encouraged in the last home into the currently poor-quality lawn environment for my new place. After 5 years, some of the older ones with cracks in them didn't do well in the move (and goodness were they heavy to transport!) but I was able to get the plants out of the broken containers once they were at my new place. I saved the still sturdy containers for plants such as raspberries that would spread too much outside containers and keep my favourite perennials like a 1 year old rose bush in their container without damaging their root systems and soil environment.

I have 6 gutted boxfan frames in my yard. Just had to look in the garage!

I tryed grow'n my own veggies last yr 4 the 1st time and was pretty successful. I'm a widow on a fixed income so when I can save durn'n the grow'n season I'm truly THANKFUL... and I'm truly THANKFUL that GOD has given ppl like u the ability 2 teach ppl like me. We are planting in pallets this year, talk about ready made square foot gardening!!! We found a carpet company that practically begged is to take every pallet they had, also there where carpet reminants that could be put under planters to suppress weeds as well!

Jess, I think it's a great idea! I highly doubt it's any more leeching than the plastic flower pots....saving money is always good! I made a little pond in my garden from a kiddie pool too for about $150 cheaper than getting a real pond liner! It not only looks nice but the frogs, birds and other critters love it too. In turn the toads eat the bad bugs in my garden...nature's pesticide! :)

I picked up a kiddie pool from the neighbor's trash and have it sown in salad greens right now. Great minds think alike! And mine is hot pink, too!!!

I love these! I have 3 in my backyard. I set them on top of pallets because over time the pool gets brittle and one wrong move with a weed eater and we had a bit too much drainage. 🤣 I am always looking for inspiration on how I can create something amazing while spending little to no money at all! Hi Jess! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this great video! I am one of those folks who has to live with limited yard space, but I have huge dreams for a homestead one day. It is videos like this that really help to make us think outside the box for those who have limited space. I just moved a year ago to my smallest yard yet. But I must grow fresh food! I spoke with my landlord and he agreed I could use the black grow bags much like what you have shown here to create a garden space that goes around all sides of my house. I purchased x36 15 gallon grow bags and x30 25 gallon grow bags from Amazon. Purchasing the bags was about $250, not bad! The soil though.... to get good yet fairly priced soil (compost, sweet peat, vermiculite) to fill these bags cost me $900 plus I have to mix the dirt myself. But in my eyes, absolutely worth it to see beautiful plants and be able to grow fresh food year round. These grow bags are great for small spaces and truly affordable! For those who rent, when you need to move you can take them with you, or dump out the dirt and fold up the bags (though you should really try to keep the dirt too due to expense). Biggest downside to cloth bags is they do need more water than your normal growing container. If anyone plans to use these, make sure to keep them close to a water source because you will water once or twice daily depending on weather. Also make sure to put them in weed free areas or on top of landscape fabric. Do not use a weed whacker near them! Thanks again Roots & Refuge team for the inspiration and positivity. When my nana hurt her back and could no longer get into her big garden, I bought her three big plastic totes and put them on her deck. We poked holes in then filled them with soil. We planted peas and salad greens in one and tomatoes and herbs in one and green beans and potatoes in the last. She loved it and kept them going for almost five years. Changing them with the seasons and never having to hurt herself. It was perfect lawn chair height.

This was my first video about gardening. It is the one that started me on to a wonderful adventure. In 2014, I became disable, i am 58 now but I find 10, 15, 30 minutes here and there to grow in container. Kiddie pools, yay! Also, use fabric shopping bags. I can not believe this city gal, who doesn't like getting hot or dirty is growing food. I live on ssi so money comes up short and some days I cant move. I have chicken feed and dog food bags that I use for several things. Grow bags and shelter for my animals. They last about a year. I've used kiddie pools for years and aluminum boats boats, I've used every container you can think of, even sinks and coffee containers. Where there is a will, there is a way💕 It's something I learned from my Daddy💕💕💕 Flowers in the garden help with pest control😍

I am renting & the very first "patio garden" I planted, (which was 5 years ago,) I used a kiddie pool for lemon cucumbers, storage bins for tomatoes, 5-gallon buckets for peppers. And whatever else I could gather for flowers and herbs. I've been hooked ever since!!! #NOEXCUSES #IMUSTGROW ... thanks for bringing back great memories!!

I actually made a raised herb garden using an old wooden picnic table . Added wooden sides all around and landscaping cloth stapled inside to help hold the soil. Still working great after 10 years !

And THIS IS IT!!! 🙌 Now I can slowly aquire the cynder block & rebar to build nicer raised beds, and the t-posts, and cattle panel to build pretty canopes (other great ideas I got from you). Even these cheap materials are a bit steep for us right now. Right now, kiddy pool is just our speed! 👌

Love this! I did this 20 or so years ago when my puppy didn't take to the kiddy pool. So instead of giving it away, I just set it in a convenient spot and planted flowers in it. I used it for several years before it disintegrated into pieces. Just used a jumbo nail and a hammer to make my holes. So yes, rescue those pools and upcycle them!

I was reminded of my father in law. He lives in the city of chicago and I think that man would grow a garden in cracks in the pavement. Its awesome. I'm about 9 hrs south and get to have a garden so when he comes down he spends time just looking at it.

I was always taught to keep your crops together by my grandmother. Mixing plants was never good. But watching your videos I now understand that crops Can mix once you learn their growing process. Gardening is work in itself, I've learned so much going through the process. It's amazing how 1 little seed, can feed, humanity.

Made my kiddie pool garden tonite! Was SO very proud; a purple elephant head on one side, repurposed it found on the curb. May have overplanted..lol. good video, I paid $.40 for (4) kiddy pools@ the end of summer clearence. I dropped potatoe buds in my boxes, great idea to use them to cover plants in winter. I put my tomatoes close to the little chained link fence in the yard instead of trellis. so far the tomatoes are growing well up the fence. my family laugh when I planted in the pools a few years ago. but it was easier to take care of. looking forward to seeing your next video. thank you.

Hi Jess, It is possible to set.up this kiddie pool in combination with the black grow bags and have a subirrigated garden. You leave the pool empty and drill a set of holes only around the sides at 1/4-1/2" from the bottom. Fill and plant the grow bags and place the in the pool. Buy pea gravel and cover.any exposed bottom of the pool with a light layer just higher than the holes and fill the pool to just until you see a bit of water leaking out of the holes. There should be no standing water above the gravel. The self wicking grow.bags will take up the water needed and you will have no mosquitoes since there is no standing water. A float valve and water source can ne used to make it maintainence free if wanted, otherwise just ensure the small bit of water is replenished daily. This is a method created by Larry Hall from MN and has worked well for many of us. It saves.on total soil cost as.well, however you will need an intact kiddie pool.

I have been using the pools for about 16 years now for my flowers. I have voles and moles underground in my yard, and the first year I moved here I found out the hardway that they love eating the roots of my flowers. I usually put brick around my pools to try and disguise them. I have a lot of shade area so my Hostas do really good in the pools. I have had people to come up in my yard and ask if they could go swimming...lol. A small pool here cost $8 and takes about $40 in potting mix. A little expensive but works and looks great. I usually tier mine by setting a 2ft 4x4 in the middle and putting a big flower pot on top with flowers. Have one with pedestal bird bath in center. You can decorate them so pretty and they will keep for years. Tfs! Love your videos!

Your videos are so satisfying to watch. The next best thing to being in the garden is watching someone else in their garden! I live down in Hope, will be moving closer to Little Rock at the end of the year, and it's really helpful to see how someone in my climate does things. I have a retired kiddie pool that I am going to plant rice in this year :)

Hi Roots, Have not even started the video and want to thank you for putting this out. For awhile now my used baby pool; which I had some goldies and little water plants in for a well but my cat got into the pool way to easy. Lets just say Ssh-kabob goldies all 5. So went out and got a 150 gal pond from Lowe's and the sits in the garden area doing nothing but taking up room and collecting unnecessary amounts of water in Florida not good to do. Now, this pool/pond I have been thinking maybe the trash, sell or give away. But for a split second I thought why not a garden bed..Ugh huge, and would need dirt big pain to do because I have many gardens beds in my yard all I have to do is plant right into ground with hardly any needed work stuff grows. So I am going to see if I am inspired by your idea and let my spinning wheels begin and Here I go on too watch. Let you know when done; and what happened to the baby pool. City gardening is tough sometimes all you can do is read because you can not grow. Try Hydroponics in painted glass jars and grow in your windows or on your porches..

The pool garden is seriously so cute. I have one my chickens pecked holes in last summer, gonna have to give this a try. Thanks for inspiring me to try a container garden this year, I wasnt thinking I'd be able to get anything done this season.

I love using these swimming pools for gardening beds. Last year I grew peppers eggplants cucumbers. In the larger ones I use to grow squash.

Strawberries are good for those. I did that last year with mine.

Great idea & I just wanted to add, since you poked holes in the bottom anyway, 3 more holes from a tomato cage is nothing. Of course you'd only be able to do this if the pool was sitting on grass or dirt as the spikes from the tomato cage(s) would need the earth below the pool for stabilization. I think it would be perfect for tomatoes. Even in the size you have there, one could do 5 cages thru the bottom and then tie them together for further support, a little chicken wire inside the pool but along the outer edge would offer further protection/support. Just a thought........ :-)
