I just wanted to thank the channel and everyone on it. I started flying again this year after a very long 17-year break with PP-SEL and 85 hours. I have to say that the content and comments on this channel helped me greatly to get back into flying and training safely. I'm at 230 hours and with IR and MEL done while working on my CPL at this point, and I still come back to the channel for more every chance I get. I also hope to own an airplane in the near future, and you covered the various aspects of owning vs. renting very well. Keep the videos coming! Thanks again!

The checklist item is so important. It's a point in a flying career that you have to make the mental checklist to slow down and do the checklist. Maybe you get away with it in a trainer with fixed gear. But when you move up to more advanced and faster airplanes, it's easy to forget important tasks. Lots of perfectly great airplanes have been landed without the wheels put down because someone didn't follow the checklist.
@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing and I totally agree. I'm still flying pretty basic aircraft but even then it's easy to miss important things. Best to just have the habit of always using the checklist.

Charlie, I have told you this before but I believe it is worth repeating again. I can’t wait for the day when you get through the CFI course and are working with pilots of all skill levels. I know that the flying community is going to be much better off once you get this rating. You are already a great teacher and if your patience level is always like what I see here, you are going to be a great blessing. Thank you for your ongoing inspiration.

Keep up the great work and stay safe!✌🏼️

Plus an IFR rating can turn many no-go situations into "go" situations. Maybe the ceiling is low at your airport, but ten miles away it's clear. Very common for that to happen in Alaska.

@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks and I'm glad you found it helpful! I agree... even if you don't get your instrument, maybe take a few IFR lessons and learn how to read approach plates so that if other aircraft are in the VFR pattern with you but on the approach you'll be more familiar with what their position and intentions mean. Looking back I wish I would have been more exposed to it even during my PPL.

Subscribed! Your personal minimums is a huge one I’ll agree with. Ironically mine have changed to be more restrictive since I got my license, after an uncomfortable flight in some thick haze. Lots of great points here, and still working on the confidence to leave my 50nm bubble. I learned to fly under the class B shelf of LAX, but fly in dead airspace and land of nothing in the desert. Definitely losing the confidence I had to fly in the busy airspace down below, crazy what 30 days will do to confidence on the radio.
@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brad! Pumped to have you here. Definitely agreed on the personal minimums. And I hear you on feeling "rusty" - maybe consider listening to ATC stream of the airspace you normally fly in and get some mental reps in. I enjoy doing that in the car.

Good question... I have not really found a great solution other than turning their wifi/bluetooth off which helps a lot. I can usually get about 90 minutes that way. Some of the other aviation youtuber's I see will plug in external power to them so that it's not an issue. It just get a little more complicated when you want a strut mounted camera as well :)

I'm intrigued, I've been working since I was 11 years old to get to a major airline. Finally made it, and all I want to do is to buy an airplane to fly for fun and remember why I love aviation. Looking forward to watching your videos. If you need a ride when you fly into KJWY send me a message.

Thanks Chad and congratulations on your flying career! I have met many airlines pilots that still say their favorite plane to fly is a super cub. So having a plane on the side to fly when you aren't in the big jets seems to be a common thing.

I think you are right with the top two. Radio is one I have picked myself up on recently, my method of fixing it is to actually ask for a service rather than just going onto the monitring squawk (that might not be something you have in the USA but we do here in the UK when you put in a squawk code to tell ATC that you are monitoring the fequency). I live off check lists so have one for when I fly with a others, to make sure I check them out as well (it covers ask how they feel, what they want to see or do and also what I would like them to do, such as tell me if they see other traffic and how to do it, when not to talk and to ask questions). On your number one, even though I have a fair number of hour, I still try to keep up with keeping on top hence I subscribe to your channel and others with connent that helps me look at what I do (this gives me a chence to reflect on what I do, which is also the reason I video most of my flights and share so others can give their views or talk about the content and learn).

Thanks for the content. I'm taking my second crack at my PPL (ran out of time & money 10 years back), communication is definitely where I find myself working. Have found a lot of benefit listening to LiveATC to hone my skills and use more concise phrasing. The additional ratings bit I've already fount true. I started with a glider license, which is a great foundation for energy management. First time my CFI pulled power to idle in the 172 for a simulated engine failure it was a non-issue for me.

Thanks for the comment. I haven't yet flown a glider but I imagine that is the masterclass in energy management! And communication gets easier with time. Listening to ATC app is so so helpful and I still do it regularly. Check out the other ATC videos on this channel if you'd like more on this. Hope it helps!

It's spring time here in the Patagonia and I'm super happy to finally get rid of the sweater. I would add mistake #-1 (pre-pilots make the most): thinking that a pilot license is too expensive and too difficult to get.

Hi John - that must be awesome to fly down there, wow. And we're ready for some heat relief here in TX.... I agree with you, sometimes the idea of getting your license gets prematurely thrown out the window due to costs, but there are more and less expensive ways to enjoy aviation. I've done some content on that and plan to do more so that people don't write it off too early.

Airspeed management for sure, always keep an eye on that. Another thing is getting out of your flow, make sure you are robotically consistent in the critical points of flights, and on the ground. Being aware of what is around you, especially when you are at a new or unfamiliar airport, is key.

@@AirplaneAcademy Thanks Charlie. I dial in frequency changes and run my own navigation congruent with the magenta line. VFR route planning with an old school flight computer is extremely rewarding. I've been binge watching your videos tonight as I just discovered your channel and it is AWESOME!!! Well you are awesome at this and just a great guy all around I can tell. Anyway I wanted you to know that you are providing a great value to anyone interested in GA at probably any level, most of all those just getting started. I've not only subbed to the channel but I've been saving all these videos as they are so full of great reference info for later to look back on. I'm not even close to being a pilot but a lifelong enthusiast since my earliest flying experiences as a kid. I recently re-caught the bug of planes and flying and I wish I had someone like you to teach and guide me in my younger days to show me it was possible to actually get a license and even my own plane without having to make 6 figures a year. My dream was pretty much crushed early on by mere myths and bad info from those that really didn't know what they were talking about. That happens a lot in life unfortunately. Well for now I am living a bit vicariously through people like you until the day I do this myself. Sorry for the long winded rant. Just wanted to say thank you and I am very happy to have found you. :)

Hey Charlie, I'm a 16 year old student pilot from California and I'm getting pretty close to my PPL. I watch a lot of aviation youtube channels and this is definitely one of my favorites, I hope your channel gets millions of subscribers like it deserves. Recently, I've been trying to convince my mom to let me have an introductory flight to aerobatics for my birthday (just a one time thing). My mom thinks it's too dangerous and I've been trying to find good resources to prove that it isn't as dangerous as she thinks. I read your article about aerobatics which helped me understand what it is, I was wondering if you knew of any sources to help me out. Thanks! Keep up the good work!

@@Joesofly1 Hey Joseph, I haven't had my first cross-country solo yet. There's been a lot of wild fires in California as I'm sure you've heard and it's delayed my flying by about a month. Aw, mom, it isn't dangerous under the guidance of a good instructor. And aerobatics is yet another way to improve ones proficiency as a pilot. Learning 1G rolls, stall-spins, split-S maneuvers, etc. all reinforce the capabilities and performance envelopes of an airplane. Let her read that. :) Good luck with your training. I've had a few lessons in an C-152 Aerobat. It's scary fun. And really, like so many other extensions of ones training, it does improve your flying skills. If you go on for your commercial ticket, there are maneuvers there that will benefit significantly from aerobatic training.
@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Timothy - congrats on preparing for your PPL! That's awesome. I've only done aerobatics once, but it was completely amazing. I think basic aerobatics can be extremely safe (loops, rolls, even spins), and they do make you more proficient (especially spin training). You might try positioning it as that and really focus on spin training (easy to let stalls turn into spins if you're un-coordinated) and then do a loop and a roll at the end of the flight. But at the end of the day if she's your guardian then that's how it needs to be for now. You have the rest of your aviation career still ahead of you and aerobatics will always be there. Good luck! And thanks for the compliments on the channel, glad you are finding it useful!
