I think Greg Biffle should be recognized more. Mainly because even though he never really won a Cup Series championship, but from 2003 to 2013, he racked up 19 wins and stayed consistent during that time. Even though his final year in 2016 was awful, he still came back in 2019 and won in the Truck Series in that one-off event at Texas.

He won the truck and xfinity championship though, and most of the reason he fell off at the end was because Roush as a whole fell off. If Biff had jumped of the sinking ship a few years before his retirement, he probably would've had a resurgence and been around a few more years

Bobby Labonte was a driver who wasn’t flashy by any means. He had some of the best equipment and consistently ran up front with JGR throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s. A solid driver. As for Sterling Marlin He was a championship level threat with Ganassi in 2002 before his injury derailed it. Yeah he occasionally ran well after but he wasn’t the same.

I remember when Bobby was very young, in the Busch series & first came into the Cup series, he was something of a hot head and showed flashes of temper, the opposite of his brother "the Ice Man". He got over that pretty quickly and you didn't see much of that as his career moved on. Maybe if he would have kept up with the hot temper, he'd be more remembered as a "colorful character", like Tony Stewart.

Mark Martin is not even close to underrated, but SlapShoes said it best about him, "Mark Martin had the unfortunate reality of being a great driver surrounded by the greatest drivers." As for who I think is actually underrated, Michael McDowell has been showing why I've been silently cheering him on in the last couple of years. Sure, it can be argued that for all its majesty, anyone can win the Daytona 500. But even after that one, he was very consistent that season with Top 10s very often. I'm hoping he can bring that back again.

Harry Gant. Didn't race in Winston until his mid-30's or full-time until 40ish, six top five points finishes in just twelve seasons racing every race, oldest driver to win a Cup race @ 52, exceeded in lesser funded equipment, hardly ever crashed himself out, four seasons with over 1K laps led, won nearly one in five Grand National / Busch races, the original "Mr. September." Not NASCAR-related, but he won an IROC championship and was arguably the best short track driver ever w/ HUNDREDS of track wins all over the U.S. One of NASCAR's greatest drivers all-time that's barely in anyone's greatest NASCAR drivers all-time.

One driver that deserves recognition is Ricky Rudd. Even though he never won a title, he did win a number of races including the Brickyard 400 & what makes that win remarkable is the fact that he won that race with his own team. He is one of the last owner-drivers to win in NASCAR. Now when it comes to other series, one driver that deserves recognition is Gil de Ferran as he is one of a handful of drivers to have won in both CART & the IRL as the peak of his career came during "The Split" & he won the 2003 Indy 500. He also set the fastest ever speed at a closed track (which still stands today) across all series in 2000 at Auto Club Speedway when he went 241.4 mph.

Hylton certainly deserves way more kudos than he gets. He actually holds the record for most weeks leading the point standings of any non-champion. 49 total if memory serves. In his prime, he was absolutely one of the most consistent drivers ever. After 300 starts, he had 224 top tens! That's the highest of any driver at that point in their career. His top ten percentage was almost equal to Lee Petty's by '71-'72. If he'd ever been in half-decent equipment, he'd be easily winning as much as say, Benny Parsons.

James Hylton was an independent driver for almost his entire career. The fact that he was able to consistently finish in the top 5 and top 10 speaks volumes about his ability. If he had factory support, he would have won a lot more than 2 races. That being said, his points finishes prior to the Modern Era (pre-1972) are a bit misleading, as a lot of the factory teams didn't race at the smaller tracks, therefore they weren't championship contenders. But even taking that in to consideration, he was still one of the better drivers of his era. Just not one of the greats.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels Front Row Joe Nemechek gets overlooked. His Cup career wasn't fantastic, but he did spend a lot his career drivng for average teams. His Xfinity career, however, was really good. 126 top 10 finishes isn't to bad. Roughly a quarter of his starts, with almost all of those starts coming in a NEMCO Motorsports car. James Harvey Hylton deserves way more recognition as well. At least the ARCA broadcasts always made a note to mention James, even still today with Brad Smith running his 48 car. Off topic, but it applies to two guys mentioned, Bobby Labonte and Sterling Marlin both deserved better send-offs than what they got. At least Terry got the special tribute scheme at Talladega in his final race, even though NASCAR had to be such butts about the car.

Yeah I think Bill Davis didn't give Randy enough time in that 22 car, as he was fired after only 13 races. Aside from a win at Rockingham later that year, it took Ward Burton a few years to really come into his own too. He also got a shot with Hendrick when Ricky Craven was injured. But he was committed to racing for a third consecutive BGN title, so he only agreed to drive in the races that were at the same track as the Busch race. He had three top-10s in the first five races he drove, including a 5th place finish at Martinsville. But he also had some really bad luck, including a couple big crashes at Charlotte and Dover. With the Busch Series having more standalone races during the summer months, he was unavailable to drive the car. Wally Dallenbach, Jr. was brought in for those races, who would eventually be hired to drive the car full-time after the August Michigan race. As far as Randy's bid for a 3-peat in the Busch Series, it didn't go very well, as tensions with the team forced him to leave at the end of the season, and he never got another chance with a competitive Cup team. Randy was really good on the short tracks. I'm sure he could have won several races at Bristol or Martinsville, or maybe even at tracks like Dover or Darlington that are more reliant on the driver rather than the car. Definitely one of the big "what-ifs" in NASCAR history.

To add on to James Hylton, he still holds the record for the highest finishing position by a rookie over a season in NASCAR history in that 1966 season (Note: NASCAR didn't start rookie of the year honors until 1954). I always wondered what would have happened if Bobby Labonte stayed at Joe Gibbs Racing. Would he have ever won another race. Hindsight is always 20/20 but I couldn't see a reason why he would have moved to Petty Enterprises considering that Joe Gibbs has just won the championship with Tony Stewart in 2005.
@zlinedavid
@zlinedavid Жыл бұрын
I think he felt he would be forever the “second” driver at Gibbs after Smoke won his 2nd title in 4 years. That and at the time, Gibbs wasn’t quite considered an “elite” team yet. Really, really good maybe and on the verge of hitting that “elite” status, but not quite yet. They were still the #2 Chevrolet team behind Hendrick. They took that next step up when they became “the” Toyota team.
@TankSlappr
@TankSlappr Жыл бұрын
@@zlinedavid I can definitely understand the second driver thing, but I wonder what promises Petty Enterprises made to Bobby considering that the team had only won 3 races in the last 20 years and hadn't been an elite organization since the 70's. Also I wasn't old enough to pick up the narrative around Joe Gibbs Racing at the time but it's hard for me to comprehend how JGR wouldn't have been considered an elite organization considering the fact that they had 3 championships under their belt. 2005 was before Jimmie Johnson went on his tear, and their last championship up until that point was Jeff Gordon's in 01'. JGR had 2 championships in that span of time in 02' and 05'. Of course it's hard to see things as they were back then with the knowledge we have now.
@zlinedavid
@zlinedavid Жыл бұрын
@@TankSlappr I can understand your perspective on that, but I was around during that time. Like I said, Gibbs was ALMOST there, but they weren’t the powerhouse they are today. It all has to do with OEM backing. They were the #2 GM team, behind….Hendrick. And the only thing I can think that would have lured Bobby to Petty back then was teaming up with Robbie Loomis.
@TankSlappr

If RFK never become an elite organization I can see this happening to Brad Keselowski. You can already argue right now he's overlooked compared to the other active champions of the sport. He won his championship over 10 years ago in 2012 making him the driver whose been a champion for the longest time of all the current full time drivers. Many who are new to the sport didn't see Brad Keselowski win that championship. Now he's being overshadowed by his former teammate Joey Logano who has two championships within the last five years.

DJ had a slow start to his career, but he had a hell of a run from 1996-2002. But that 2003 season was abysmal. His last couple years at Yates were better, but nowhere close to his prime. And then there was trainwreck that was Michael Waltrip Racing. A lot of people compare MTJ's career arc to Dale Jarrett's. For his sake, I hope Martin retires before he gets to the abysmal point. While he had a good season in 2022, not winning a race for the first time since 2014 was considered a failure. It does appear he is heading towards that trajectory.

I know he's recently been inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, but I still get the impression that Matt Kenseth doesn't get the respect he deserves. The Wisconsinite assured his place in history by securing the final championship of the Winston Cup era, 2003. Does it matter that he only recorded 1 win, 11 top 5's and 25 top 10's? It shouldn't matter, because it didn't matter so much how many races a driver won in a season, as long as they finished as far up as they could when they didn't win. Yes, Ryan Newman recorded 8 wins in 2003, but when a driver finishes 6th in the standings despite those wins, it's an indication of wild inconsistency, costing him points. He has more wins in his career than the likes of Dale Earnhardt Junior and Terry Labonte, he twice won the Daytona 500 (2009 and 2012) and was involved in the iconic moment in 2015 "Kenseth, cleared by Lagano? Maybe NO! KENSETH TAKES HIM OUT!! Lagano into the wall. Caution comes out and the crowd roars." Yes, after his final win, at Phoenix in 2017, he never competed towards the front again, but the fact that he was called back from retirement, twice, to fill in for drivers fired by other teams (Trevor Bayne at Roush and Kyle Larson at CGR in 2020) showed that that there was at least some potential in him left at the time left was forced out of JGR. Sure the latter stint with CGR wasn't good, but given that he hadn't driven a Cup car for some time and was thrown in at the deep end, he still did okay in the circumstances

I had the privilege of helping pushing Hylton's Arca car to the grid on his final dirt start. That man was an honest cat, such a shame we lost him and his son early. I think with Kyle Petty, people ended up seeing him as riding his dad's coat tails when in reality his latter career is pretty much just fighting for the last scraps at the table. When he was at Wood Bros and latter Sabco, that's where the true Kyle Petty can be seen. He wasn't helped when the wheels fell of SABCO in 95, despite still getting a win. That organization would be stuck mired near 30th in points til Ganassi took it over. He went from that to making his own team, trendy and flawed as it was in the 90s. Only to fall from that back to Petty Enterprises to try and get that team ready for his son. No, Kyle isn't Darrell Waltrip or Bill Elliot, they couldn't jumpstart their own teams either. But you gotta put him on the level of any other driver who can get exactly the finish of their equipment.

You have to wonder how different his career would be if he had gotten to Yates a few years earlier, or if he taken a Busch series ride with Childress or Roush . I agree with most of your points with ever driver, except for Dale Jr. he was determined to be his own man, never tried to compare himself to Sr. The Fans loved him more because of this and the fact that he was Dale Jr. Most of the drivers you mentioned and a lot that you didn't, with the exception of Mark Martin, just stayed in the sport to long, even the great Darrell Waltrip became a back of the track driver. But to be truthful all of the drivers that started from the ground and built and raced their own race cars Like Ken Schrader, Rusty Wallas, Lake Speed. These types of men are the ones that don't get the deserved recognition. And there are a bunch of them. With this said I would like to give a shout out for the Stapelton 42 KZfaq channel. He has in my opinion the best of all channel for the OG Nascar Fans, because he rubs elbows and does a tremendous job covering these guys and the way it was when Nascar was so Great.
