Most multiplayer modes are just the regular single player game with more people in it. Not so these seven spectacularly ambitious multiplayer modes that came out of absolutely nowhere and, in some cases, spawned entirely new genres. Enjoy, and subscribe for more videos like this from Outside Xbox!

Also Mikes wants to be a professional race car driver, Jane wants to romance a vampire, and Andy “want to do is to create the perfect genetic soldier! Not for power, not for evil, but for good. Carlos Blanka will be the first of many - they shall march out of my laboratory and sweep away every adversary, every creed, every nation, until the very planet is in the loving grip of the Pax Andynica. And then peace will reign, and the world, and all humanity, shall bow to me in humble gratitude…”

Mass Effect 3's multiplayer is my go-to pick for tacked-on multiplayer modes that turned out surprisingly awesome. The mode was your basic horde-mode shooter affair with objectives between waves of foes then an extract, but the mode got a ton of support post-launch. Loads of new characters, including fan favorites like Krogan and Volus, new weapons, entire new enemy factions, and maps. Especially fun on PC where you could break up the omni-key (one button was for sprint, cover and pick up and on PC you could reassign those using an edit), I'll forever remember my favorite, the N7 Paladin, the one man explosion machine.

Controversial take I know but I think Bioshock 2 is the best game in the series. The whole change in the way fights work is far more tactical as you set things up for the takedown. The multiplayer was a bonus given they gave it some actual thought. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on the DS had an excellent asymmetric multilayer, where one side was Link scurrying about through a Pacman style maze retrieving mcguffins and taking shelter in the safe zones his enemies couldn't enter. The other player controlled several invincible guard golems, and sent them about the map by drawing paths for them to patrol. They couldn't cross the safe zones, and Link wasn't shown on that player's map until Link picked up a mcguffin, leading to a dash for Link back to safety as the other player vectored their guards in to intercept. It could be played on yours and another nearby DS while only requiring one copy of the game.

OK, so I have a game mode that while is not ambitious, it was so fun that it made me and my friends laugh and play for hours... It was XIII's The Hunt mode. To explain quickly, you and other people were put into a multiplayer map where you were given a hunting gun and nothing more, you could shoot each other with it, but the main focus was you had to hunt down this high-pitched singing Ghost that darted around the map and would kill you instantly if you got touched by it... The more you shot at it, the smaller it would become, but the more faster it got. Me and my mates would play this for HOURS on PS2. We laughed every time we ran past a hallway and heard it's helium sounding voice, or when it would appear out of nowhere and instant kill one of us... God I had such a great time with it. Also a special mention, IMO has to go to Condemned: Criminal Origin's Cops vs Criminals mode, so scary in those pitch black maps being chased down by melee welding crazy people.

We played it so much that we rented the game a few times just for that. And can't leave a comment without stating how much I LOVED AC Brotherhood multiplayer mode and Splinter Cell's Spies VS Mercs mode. Both were amazing and played the heck out of them. The later AC multiplayers brought some fun stuff, but I missed the truly hardcore mode in Brotherhood. (The whispers in later ones made it a little too easy to catch someone sneaking up on you.)

Two games come to mind for multiplayer twists: Command & Conquer: Renegade (Which still has a fan base with Renegade X.) Your typical first/third person shooter got a whole lot more interesting as each base let you buy unit upgrades/vehicles. These units how ever were dependent on having the buildings to make them and having your ire harvester alive to being in currency. The other was Geist. It had 3 modes, a death match where you could possess different characters to fight and switch when they were on low health along with super units to find on the map. A “king of the hill” mode where you tried to possess the target the longest. And a ghost hunter vs ghost mode. All none that needed to be added to the game, but added another scoop of fun to it.

Oh, wow! This is such a coincidence. A couple weeks ago I was trying to remember what Future Cop LAPD was named and couldn’t figure it out. I ended up deciding it wasn’t real and I imagined the whole thing. It’s so weird to go literally decades without thinking about it and then have it show up twice back to back

A few months back I was trying so hard to remember the name of the game. I finally saw a KZfaqr make a video on it and all the memories came rushing back. Fun Fact : It was the first game by EA Redwood Shores who would later rebrand as Visceral and make Dead Space.

On companion apps - I did use the Black Flag one. It was basically the minigame where you sent ships you'd captured off to do stuff to make money. It was kind of useful to be able to keep that going while you weren't actively playing the game. I think it also had a map in it as well so you could refer to that while playing the main game.

WOAH! Someone brought up Futurecop LAPD! I played it as a kid and LOVED the multiplayer mode. It's one of those games like Legend of Legaia that I am shocked when someone else even knows it exists!

Read through the comments, real OGs know the game, I'm glad to see so many comments about it. It definitely has a cult following. A decently sized KZfaqr also talked about it a few months back somewhat probably also introduced it to new people. Also Legend of Legaia. I never played it, well the full game. I remember I LOVED the demo and played it over and over again (Same with Tomba). Has always been on my to play list since I was a kid.

Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal had a multiplayer mode that nobody expected from the usually single-player series, and it was quite a fleshed out mode too, featuring many of the iconic weapons and gadgets from the series. While I never had a chance to play it on either PS2 or PS3, I remember often hearing how it was a much loved experience by other Ratchet and Clank fans

Please do a companion app video!! Best one ever in my opinion was the AC: Black Flag one where you could send ships out to gather resources. It was a perfect way to progress my character and keep “playing” black flag even when I could play the actual game at home.

I ADORED the Bioshock 2 multiplayer. It may have been the first multiplayer game I played that not only had story ties to the actual lore of the main games, but lore inside the mode itself. I found that utterly fascinating. Also, it was just a really fun time. Mixing and matching the loadouts gave lots of variety, and it was a pretty darn balanced game. I played that thing like it was my CAREER. I was even in the top 50 leaderboard for some time on 360.

A multiplayer mode I remember playing a lot of back in the day was Kid Icarus Uprising. It had two teams of faceless, nameless angel soldiers fighting each other in PVP until someone got enough kills to become Pit, for the light team, or Dark Pit, for the dark team. It was honestly a really fun mode! And the daybreak item from Smash Ultimate is from that mode too!

Assassins creed multiplayer was amazing when first came out. So many people would be crying in the lobby because they got 15 kills in one game and only got 1000ish points, but someone with 3 kills got like 5K. They didn't realize if you run around like mad speed killing everyone you got barely anything. Taking your time and setting up a kill was amazingly fun and rewarding when you dominated a match with barely any kills because you did it with style. My favorite was poisoning someone when you walk past and them just about to kill their target and dropping dead.. you see the guy that almost got tapped freeze like, "Wtf happened" then you'd get them as a target hopefully and half the job of finding them was done.

That Assassin's Creed multiplayer mode only gave me one good memory, and it was the guess the target game, where I sit on the same bench as the two other NPCs, THAT look like me. From there, my pursuer had to guess which one I was, safe to say, this strat is gold.

That AC Brotherhood mp mode has given me so many cool moments to look back on. I think my favourite was seeing my pursuer walking towards me - me then slipping around the corner and parking on a bench and using the ability to transform the few npcs around you into the same character model as you. And watching as he approached, hesitated and then stabbed the character next to me. Good times were had in that mode
