@@letsmakemoney8027… lol… I don’t know where you’re from, but… Not everyone in USA is “Just waiting for the opportunity to rob, or murder someone.” The average person in USA would be willing to at least help you sort out your whereabouts, and help with some directions. Granted, it’s probably a smaller number who would literally “just take you there” themselves… However, the criminal element, is a smaller number still…. Unless you’ve simply wandered into “the worst possible neighborhood”…. But I think that’s true in any country.

If you are wondering why you have to pay more expensive than Thai people. Please understand that renting a place in tourist attractions is expensive, but selling to Thai people is cheaper because the seller is sympathetic to Thai people because the cost of living of Thai people is quite high compared to income. But you can negotiate the price a little bit. Because Thai people do not add a profit price much higher than the cost, and most importantly, if the product already has a price tag, it is very inappropriate because it seems like an insult to Thai people exploiting tourists. And if asked why having a Thai friend, it will be cheaper. Because sellers tend to think that Thai people's friends who take them with them are like their friends too. Causing sometimes to sell some losses (in this case, it's not much) because I think that taking it on average all day and still making a profit The help of tourists to help with spending makes Thailand have a better economy and will use those money to develop the country. Including attractions, safety, cleanliness and more facilities for you guys. And I'm very glad that you know Thailand and travel. We will always welcome you with a smile because you are one of our important guests. If you come to Thailand, you will immediately become a member of our family. always love you guys

Credit cards are not common in Thailand, but we don't actually use cash that much (especially in Bangkok). Every Thai has bank apps on their phones that can transfer money across all banks instantly without fees. This service is not available to foreigners unless you open a bank account here. Don't let the absence of credit cards make you think that Thailand is a cash-heavy society, we're not, we just use a different system (mobile payment instead of cards). But cash is always welcomed, unless you have really large 1000 baht bills, people don't want to accept that because they have no change.

Lately, in Thailand, people use mobile banking to pay food from street food vendors. You can notice when people use their phones to scan QR code from the street venders. And yeah! We don’t need to use a card. I used to live in USA once and I couldn’t transfer my money to the different banks immediately I wanted so I had to use Venmo instead and it took almost 1 to 2 days to transfer the money, but it’s easier in Thailand. You can transfer money immediately without any fees.

The first point about Duel pricing is definitely something you need to be aware of however - that’s usually in super touristy areas. I’ve lived in BKK for 5 years now and I’ve only experienced this when I’m in Khaosan or on the Sukumvit. Not speaking Thai will put you at a disadvantage when purchasing things because many times the seller cannot properly explain the promotion to you because the communication barrier. Countless times I’ve had money returned to me because I was unaware of a promotion I earned with my purchase. That being said I live in a more local part of Bangkok that has a lot less foreigners. Using Bank Cards - Do not use a foreign bank card to make purchases! Unless it’s an emergency I’d say. The fee will be around $10 in general but Wells Fargo charged me another $15 on top of that. So I learned the hard way. But if you’re planning on living here or just being in Thailand longer than a month you might consider opening a Thai bank account. I use my Thai mobile banking app to pay for 90% my everyday expenses. If that’s not an option you’re just better off paying the 250 Baht($7.40 USD) ATM fee but the most you can withdraw is 20,000 Baht ($590 USD) keep in mind your bank may put charges on top of that as well but definitely better than using your foreign bank card to pay for goods and services directly.

Learning some Thai isn't that difficult. Listen to the sound and write what you hear in English. Here are some examples 1 - Noon 2 - Song 3 - Sam 4 - C, yes the number 4 exactly sounds like C, See, Sea 5 - Ha, like laughing, Ha Ha Ha 6 - Hoke/Joke 7 - Jet 8 - Bat 9 - Gow/Cow 10 - Sip 11 - Sip Et 21 - Yee Sip Et 100 - Roy - like Roy Rogers 1,000 - Pan Water - Nam Ice - Nam Can Rain - Phone Toke Toilet - Hong Nam Shower - Ab Nam These are just a few of the phrases /words you can learn.

Go to the palace, and you pay the farang price. I showed my workpermit, and they still refused. Bluntly telling me "you faring, you go there" pointing at the queue for double-pricing. Despite the fact that her counter-sign had "Thai and workpermit holders". I've been living here for 18 yrs now, my wife is Thai , sad when she overheard how insulting the Thai staff spoke about the "stupid" foreigners , she was ashamed and never ever will set foot in the Palace again. Just be aware that most smiles do not mean they like you or are happy to see you.

Good points, my 2 cents nobody asked for: 1. Prices: Learn some Thai and that will mostly resolve this. Also, touristy places are of course more expensive. However, in 10+ years all over the country I've never payed more for rent than my Thai neighbors. Entrance prices to national parks and the likes ARE higher for foreigners. 2. Cards: True, but if you're here for the long run and have a bank account, a lot of payments are done with your phone now. 3. Wifi: yep 4. Transport: Great, careful with taxis that don't want to put their meter on though. For long distance with a taxi count about 8 thb/km. Renting a motorbike or car does give you a lot of flexibility. If you live out in the sticks you'll have to buy a car. 5. Hotel: Depends heavily on how touristy the area is. Most of the country you don't have this problem. Also, online discounts are good, but you need to book online to get them. The price is higher when you walk in. 6. Talking to stranger: Hmm, depends on the area. Where people depends on tourism, they'll be more accessible of course. Generally Thais are reserved and shy though. 7. I can't count?

Kinda crazy that about 20 years after I was 'stranded' in thailand when the C5 galaxy decided to spring a leak there and we had to wait until the next day to get a part so we could continue on to Afghanistan (yep.. on our way to a 1yr deployment, US Army).. we ended up riding the toyota vans (sort of angularly boxy and fwd with front engine under the front seats).. for like 2 or 3 hours To get to Pataya Hard Rock Hotel. I should have went out walking the town or just headed straight for the beach. There was a big emphasis on getting Thai currency if we were going to leave the hard rock hotel premesis.. watching your video - I wish I had went out exploring while I was there at no cost to myself for that day I was 'stuck' in thailand lol

Well informed video and spot on.Another element that is completely opposite the western world is the driving habits. Thailand is one of the most dangerous on the streets. Police don't patrol for excessive speed or driving infractions. 20 years before the Thai culture was fairly friendly and approachable but it has changed immensely due the little gadgets that are adhered to their hands. Their capacity for being social has deteriorated dramatically because of the phone. Just go behind central festival in the loading area during the early evening and examine how many of them are sitting affixed to the Facebook. English abilities have also plummeted also as I had read last year in Bangkok post.

I left Thailand before the advent of smart phones. It hadn't occurred to me that, like the rest of the world, they've become zombies to social media. I went to Indonesia after Thailand, and if you had asked me a difference, I would have said cell phone use, but it hadn't occurred to me that I moved just as switch from flip to smart phones happened, and I hung out with rich Indonesians, but poorish Thai people.

If you’re planning a lengthy stay in Thailand, you would do well to make a serious effort at learning the language. The distinctive features of Thai are quite different from those of English, so that the language cannot be learned simply by straight imitation, since there are important contrasts that you will not notice by listening only. Such contrasts as aspiration of the voiceless stops, length, tone, rhythm and stress itself are meaningful in Thai in ways that they are not in English. (Similarly, there are meaningful contrasts in English not easily noticed by the native Thai who has not studied English, although many Thais do have some English proficiency.)

Farang pricing is something to deal with, especially in tourist areas. Always ask for a discount! Thailand has easy pay (cardless, cashless) options, but sadly tourists can't get a bank account to benefit from them. Find another hotel if they ask for double for two guests!

It's not sad. You shouldn't be using those apps even if you could. Are you not aware of the dangers of a cash-less society? In Canada, the government froze the bank accounts of people who were protesting and even those supporting protesters of the government. If we don't have cash, the government can (and will ) control every aspect of our lives. Don't give your freedoms away voluntarily. Boycott anyone who doesn't accept cash.

1. Isn't that true everywhere you go? Locals always get a better deal... 2. Yes, cards are not accepted on the streets as much, however, generally foreigners avoid street food, for example. In most other places you go, malls, restaurants, shops, hotels, cards are accepted. I get by using my Greek debit card in most places, without any problems. 3. Best thing to do is buy a local sim card upon arrival. They have quite good packages, both price-wise and speed-wise. This way you will not depend on the availability of wi-fi wherever you go. Again, this is true for most places. 4. No opinion about buses and trains in Thailand. Taxis/Uber are quite cheap and safe and going by Tuk-Tuk is an experience that is not for every day, but a must-try! 5. I always book my hotel using one of the most popular websites. I always need to put the number of guests and I always pay in advance, without being charged more upon arrival. Mind you, I only visit Bangkok. 6. Very true about meeting and talking to strangers. 7. I only counted 6 differences, but nevermind!

If you need a bank card, I suggest opening a Charles Schwab Bank account. You can use the bank card to withdraw money from your account at both banks and ATMs in many countries. There is a fee that is charged, but Charles Schwab will refund any extra fees at the end of the month. You can also do investments from the Charles Schwab account into the stock market. It's a very handy card to have.

I took my gf and her 2 kids to Pattia from BKK on spec once. Went to get a room at the Siam Bay View hotel. (Probably not there anymore) asked about room prices. Was told a figure, then I asked if they discounted airline . . . I never finished the sentence and the hotel receptionist said OK, OK I give you 50% off. Result got 2 adjoining rooms for the price of one. Kids had the room service while we were out. It was a long time back now but even so 2 rooms for 2 days for £60 was good.

So....something happens to your phone and you can't pay for anything or get into the car/ flat. Also if the shop's/ hotel's app machine breaks down or loses connection or there's a power outage..........you need cash.

You can probably include one more NORMAL things : In thailand, you don't pull the handbrake while parking, as they have this practice where they will push your car slightly away so that it makes space for others to park as well. This happens to shopping malls carpark as well. Your car window could be broken if you pull your handbrake while parking. That is definitely some of a culture shock to me.

Depend on where you park. If you block other cars then definitely no handbrake with neutral gear so I try not to park on those area. Parking in slope is always park gear with handbrake.
