Private owner wagons add huge play value to a layout. My friend has built up a "Welsh Coal Train" of over 20 wagons, each in a different coal-related livery. The train is so very eye-catching as it snakes around the curves, hauled by a GWR loco. Although it could also be an LMS type.

I recently read that the design, manfacture and maintenance of private owner wagons was neither standardised nor regulated, which caused serious delays due to breakdowns whilst they were being hauled. And even when everything was working well, the trains could only manage about 15 mph! So after the Big 4 were formed in 1923, they started making their own standardardised wagons, which gradually replaced the privately owned versions.

You might think this is stupid, but I am always on the lookout for wagons that have the name of the companies I have worked for, ie, bocm, tate and Kyle, wr grace(american) kontron(swiss) and Basf. I also collect the cars I have had in my life, again, vauxhall fb,capri, Morris 1000 convertible, and so on, I'm a sad old geezer, regards and keep the information coming, always interesting, pete

That's not stupid at all! I'm the son of a South Wales coal miner, and I just can't resist buying anything GWR/BR(W)/NCB coal-related for my model railway.

County of Flint looks superb. The numbers & nameplates are better than those on the Thompson pacific.

Hi Barrie, thank you so much for this super interesting video! The close ups of these wonderful wagons is a pleasure to watch. Also the locomotives are beautifully presented! And the amount of super interesting information is an important part of the video. I have a question: could you please do a video on which locomotives are great on small layouts. My layout is only 1 square meter, an R1 circle with a station track and one siding. I have a Terrier. Peckett W4 and a small Prairie. I have no locomotives with tender, because I presume they cannot run on R1. Thanks 🙏 Greetings from Belgium! Erik PS: wonderful dog 🤩👍
