This video popped up on my feed about an hour too late... :/ I just had my 1st Skype interview. Sooo awkward. I was so excited I forgot any questions I had for them. I wrote down every question you mentioned.

Hi! Just want to share my experience as an Au Pair, maybe it will help future Au Pair and host-families. I was an Au pair in Belgium 4 years ago and I would say it was great year in general. My family was very nice ... at first sight. I think it happens with the majority of families and au-pairs when everything seems fine and interesting at first, but as long you live with the family as much you start noticing things that are weird. And you wish you asked some things before coming. I had a stay-home jobless host-mom and host-dad was working in another country so he was at home only for the weekends (during the week he never called the kids, when he was coming home he always bought toys and then leave to his office-room to work again and he was always annoyed when children sneak there). Host-mom was crazy about everything healthy and bio, because of that kids were allowed to eat only 2 candies per week, only 20 minutes of TV per week (they were never allowed to finish their cartoons, poor kids couldn't finish Frozen for months), kids ate only kinoa, carrots, broccoli, cucumbers, avocado, fish etc. During my year with them kids never had something tasty what other kids ate. When I was picking kids form school they were so jealous that other kids can eat a snack like cookies, my kids were forced to eat only carrots with humous. Mom was doing home-made washing powder to wash the clothes, washing liquid to wash the dishes. Both my clothes and kids' smelled awful. I was babysitting not less than 4-5 times every week. Host-mom loved going clubbing or doing sports or going to the restorants with her friends almost everyday, and she always did that late evening even though during the day she stayed at home and did nothing. I was spending time with children way way more than parents and that was so weird, even the youngest started speaking French with my accent. I am not kidding my mother instincts woke up... My mind literally thought that they are my kids. I was doing everything except cooking and cleaning parents' office and bedroom (they had a cleaner for that). My day was starting at 7 am and finished whenever host-mom comes home (and sometimes it could be late night). I was getting ready kids for school (doing breakfast, doing lunch for school, help all three kids to get dressed, make hair, make sure that all thing are in their bags), after that I fully cleaned the kitchen and kids rooms, washed and iron clothes, take them from school, if they had homework I helped them, make goute. After school there were around 3 hours before dinner so I played with kids all that time, while host-mom cooked the dinner I gave bath for the kids and than set the table and clean the whole kitchen after the dinner. And if mom had her crazy plans for the evening I read a book for kids' and make them sleep. If parents stayed with kids during the weekend kids were not bathed, hair was not brushed and they were wearing the same clothes that they had on Friday when I left them, rooms were a complete mess. And parents always left dirty dishes all the weekends and were waiting I would wash and clean everything on Monday. I was paid for all that 500 eur. Also twice a week I had language classes so I literary ran from my classes to kids' school to pick them up, because host-parent singed me for the school that was so far away from home because it was cheaper. During the year host-mom barely asked me if I was ok, or if I need something. I was not allowed to have my phone while I am with kids, I was not allowed to do evening classes at language school, and I was not allowed to sleep-over anywhere except the house. If I wanted to travel to France or Germany for the weekends, for example, I needed to notice host mom at least one month before... Everyday I was so exhausted that I left the family one month earlier before my contract finished, I couldn't do it anymore. Host-mom was so angry that I decided to leave that she or host-dad never called me or sent any email after that. So I spent there 11 months in total. But in general I had great year, because I would never get such crazy experience. I met great people, traveled, explored the culture and my French was on a great level. If you wonder how I stayed the whole year or why I didn't change the family. I was young, that was my first time abroad ever, I didn't know anything, and I am very calm person and hate conflicts. The first month I had thoughts to change the family and even asked my agency to help me but they said that I am just in a process of adapting and said that I need to talk with parents. I indeed talked with parents and politely said that I work way more than it says in the contract and host mom said "contract Is just a formality and any family follows it". I was naive and believed that maybe every au pair does that.... I don't know... I leave this comment for you to judge, both au pairs and host-families. Was it a normal host-family? Or is it me who made a problem from that? Was that a solid au pair experience? I still ask myself this questions. Thanks for coming for my TED talk 😅

I'll have my first Skype call with a family in Spain tomorrow morning (probably won't get to sleep tonight ugh). I'm a bit afraid of talking to the children because of the language. Like, I can ask them questions like what they enjoy most, but for sure I won't understand their answers :| Just wanted to let you know that I absolutely love your channel and I hope more people see it! Hey girls, I just had a skype call with a family yesterday and not sure what to make of it. I don't think it went badly, I prepared with the help of your videos and everything, but they did most of the talking and didn't leave me much room to ask them questions. It felt like it was more of a one-sided interview. Also, the mom was hardly on camera/engaged in the call even though she was sitting right next to the dad? They both seemed a little stiff/distant and jaded, I don't know if it was because they've had other au pairs before and have been through the process many times before, but it didn't give me the best vibe. Getting pretty desperate about finding a family but I don't know if I should go with one if they didn't seem very welcoming.

Hello, when is the right time to message my host family after first facetime interview? Host mum seems really outgoing and cool with everything, no heat or stress with her I suppose. But I am not sure if I should message her in a day or two after the call, just to check in, or whether I should wait until she messages me about another facetime session? What do you think? I find your channel really helpful as I am becoming au pair for the first time this summer, it calms me and encourages me to do so, so thank you so much guys! Also, thanks for the answer :)

I had my first two video calls just now and omg I was so nervous, I didn’t asked a lot questions but I get to say hi to their kids. It’s a good simple conversation that last around 20mins ish (is that a red flag?) May I ask, after Skyping with them, what should I do next ? Should I msg them like greetings etc etc or should I wait for their next message or video call? (I am a male AuPair) my host families are from Spain and Italy we’ve been messaging each other for weeks and finally the video call! Everything is such a mess, my room lighting was bad and I was wearing singlet because it’s summer and it so hot!!well hopefully I’m not screwed! Haizzzz

Hiya, I know this video was posted years ago, but I really need some advice. I started working as an Au Pair as soon as France went into lockdown, this is my first family. It has now been nearing three months and I am having difficulty with gaining respect in someways from the parents. I feel very uncomfortable talking to them now. I spoke to them the other night about an incident that had happened and at the time they said to feel free to talk to them about these sort of things, but then today they said that they can't 'babysit' me as well. I suppose what I'm really looking for is any advice from/for au pairs during the confinement? I feel that I am worrying not only about making sure the kids are respectful but also the parents as well which seems like a really strange thing to be worried about. Thank you.

As a host family I don’t agree with you saying oh don’t feel grateful they are calling you. Yes it’s not a big deal but don’t for get we do this out of the bottom of our hearts and do not get paid and actually spending money on feeding you and placing a roof over your head. Also it sounds like y’all don’t know anything about this because if you are doing this properly through an agency they answer all the “hard questions” for you.

I would also ask if they can set you up in contact with any of their previous aupairs! That way you can chat with them on their experience. Almost like asking for a reference haha
