Here in France, starting this summer, stores will have to put posters on the shelves of products that are using shrinkflation. The goals are 1. to make sure the customer is aware of the decrease of product in the packaging 2. to encourage the supplier not to use this method by "shaming" those who do
@tbrough90

That is honestly amazing. I wish our government cared about the people enough to advocate for us like that. Our food suppliers don't even need to tell us the food is GMO... The US needs to learn from better government practices.

@@tbrough90. Yes, they raise the price and shrink it. At some point a bag of potatoe chips will only be enough for two, but the cost will be family size. This behavior is just driving people to eat better similar to families skipping the fast food and eating at home. These conveniences just aren’t worth it anymore.

I hope they start doing that in the US. I’m so stubborn I refuse to pay inflated prices for less product unless absolutely necessary. That’s why I’m growing a huge garden and going to preserve as much produce as possible. I all out quit buying certain things like paper towels and hair conditioner and drinks and snacks.

@@mamadoom9724 shrinking the amount of laundry soap was one that amazed me and really helped the pocketbook! These days I use a little vinegar and let the water do the work! I know that is a bit much for many people, but I had cut way back on detergent over the years before I started reacting to chemicals.

We live in an apartment with a small patio. My husband has gotten a bunch of plastic buckets from work, and he's filled 1/3 of our cement slab with them, filled them with dirt, and he's growing beans, peas, cucumbers, strawberries, carrots, and even a watermelon plant. This has been such a wonderful activity for us to do with our 3- and 5-year old kids. My 5-year-old has always liked raw veggies from the garden, but mostly won't eat them from the store. There's just SOMETHING about knowing he's grown it himself, plus it probably tastes better, that he eats those raw beans like candy. We definitely don't grow enough to sustain ourselves for even a month, but it still is just so rewarding and so educational. It's also great practice for if you ever need to grow on a larger scale.

Trust and fear the Lord, He is faithful. My husband and I were just in a similar situation, we have three children. The Lord showed me that when He gives to us we can give to others. So the first check my husband got we donated some money out of thankfulness and gratitude that He provided for us (it was whatever we could within our means) to an organization that helps orphans and widows. If God forgives us we can forgive others if God provides for us we can provide for others. Praise Him and all glory to Him 🩵✨ I pray peace and joy be upon you and your household in the name of the messiah Yeshua. 🙏

This video coincides with a lot we’re doing to fight inflation. Little things here and there. Today I bought laundry lines to utilize the extreme dry Southern Nevada heat during the summer instead of using our dryer; when I go to non-food stores, shop clearance first; at the food stores, shop the discount shelves & find out the days meat is reduced; growing our Inflation Garden; don’t go out to eat- Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without! We are living in tough times, but that doesn’t mean there’s no way to get through them.

I watch what we purchase, get meats in the reduced racks (Kroger stores) which is why hubby & I can still have steak once a month, double up coupons with sale items, buying seasonal foods & getting non food items at end of season, shopping at thrift stores/consignment shops/yard sales/estate sales for items needed at home or for clothes (between making my own clothes - sewing - I get about 80% of what i wear from the various stores listed). We're retired and on a fixed income - but finding a state to retire in that is better for our situations has help greatly. We have gone back to many old school methods - we dont stream tv as an example. We use an antenna and watch what is available over the air - no monthy fees & charges. We do have our cell phones but find the best deal for our plan. We keep our temperatures within reasonable levels (no higher than 66 in the winter & no lower than 73 in the summer. We have a well insulated home & we have plenty of clothes or blankets if we get cold. Hubby & I grew up in lower income households as kids, so we learned to be frugal & live within our means.

I live in the city so I don't have space for livestock. I'm also not much of a green thumb. But I found a hack that works for me. I just wait until Walmart has the pre started fruits and vegetables, like tomato plants and the herbs, they even have fruit bushes and strawberry plants now. I take those plants and plant them in my yard. I care for them and tend to them just like as if I grew them myself from seeds. They always produce fruit. I've tried planting them from seeds myself but I just cannot figure it out. Spending a little bit more for the shortcut, once a year at the beginning of May works for us. It helps me to still develop those skills. I also plan to still try to start a few from seeds, but if they fail oh well

What irritates me with shrinkflation is that my recipes don't work out anymore. Canned food is an example of this, I have recipes that require 450gram tins and all the tins are 410gram now, some are as low as 390gram. Now I have to adjust all the quantities of my other ingredients to match the shrinking tin, but the recipe becomes a serves 6 instead of a serves 8... but the shrink isn't so big as to require 2 tins. There are also products that have completely disappeared from the shelves in my country, like canned apricot halves. I have a Stew recipe and a cake recipe that is a family heirloom recipe, both require canned apricot halves. I substituted for canned peaches, but it is not the same 😢

I adapted it for a slow cooker (this is the version i am sharing below), and I am sure it can be adapted again for an instant pot. 1kg stewing beef, trim fat, cube and brown 1 chopped onion 2 crushed garlic cloves 3 to 6 sliced carrots (qty depends on size) 4 potatoes, cut in half inch cubes 1/3 cup apricot jam 1 tablespoon curry powder (i use a mild curry) 1 cup beef stock 1 can apricot halves (450grams) Salt and pepper to taste Layer ingredients in a slow cooker in the following order: beef, onion, garlic, potatoes, carrots. Mix jam, curry powder, salt and pepper into almost boiling beef stock. Pour beef stock mixture into the slow cooker. Cook for 6 hours in the slow cooker. Stir in apricot halves with juice for the last 30 minutes of the cooking time. Serve with rice.

Children that have helped in the garden tend to be more open to trying fruits and veggies that they were a part of planting and growing. Teaches a nurturing behavior as well. One of my daughters at a young age was always joined at my hip in the garden. It may seem like hard work to some but it was therapy for us and food on the table. Great point that you don't have to do all of it because as a single working mom I know first hand that we all have individual situations. Find what works for you

My husband and I are retired and live in a fixed income as many in our country. We already had to start shopping at a lower budget grocery store as we have a set budget for groceries no wiggle room. We have had to be so creative when food shopping it is no longer a joy to take my grocery list prepared for my meal plans for the week. Because of this we have cut down to eating 2 meals a day and cutting out fresh vegetables, fruit and the amount of meat we can consume. My husband is 77 and I’m 73 it’s so sad we no longer are able,to have the adult children come for, dinners and my grandchildren ( 8 and 6) don’t have the goodies grandmas house used to have. It’s just beyond sad. However we are blessed we have food to eat, we started after the pandemic and stocked up on non perishable canned foods but keep them for emergencies. ❤️🙏🏻

Hi Angela, I live in the south also and yes storage is a huge problem in the south because of humidity. I do grow a patio garden. It is so easy now a days using verticall planters (we like green stalk). We found in the summer our patio got full sun all day long and no one wanted to sit on the patio as it was just to hot so we decided to turn it into our garden. Being almost 78 vertical gardening i so much easier on knees and no weed pulling. We also find the instant pot really easy and quick for all those dried beans. You can make a batch and put in the freezer. We also use a dehydrator for many of our garden veggies and herbs if we get to many before we can consume them all. I enjoyed your video and subscribed to see more of what you have to offer. The more food you can make at home the healthier it is for your family. Eating whole foods and moving away from all the unhealthy processed foods which will save you a bundle of money.

English lady here. It seems so funny to me that Americans are switching to clothes lines to dry washing outside when a lot of your country has a lot of sun and you use a dryer. A dryer is so expensive to run. In England we can have 4 seasons in one day, but a tiny glimpse of Sun and that washed is on the line, then everyone is tokd keep an eye on the weather. My washing has been put out and got in 3 times in one day. A lot of us don't have dryers. I gave up my dryer which i only used for sheets and towels in winter. I did buy a heated airer which is much cheaper to run. I put it on for 3 hours then turn it off for a few hours then turn it back on. Drys well. If its chilly in the evening and you leave the cover off while its drying it help to take the chill off as well. Make meal plans using similar ingredients through the week that way you don't waste food. Variety in food costs more. Our biggest problem in England is our houses are a lot smaller so not much storage space. Our washing machine is in the kitchen as most homes don't have utility rooms. Cosco isn't cheap in England. I try to shop offers and reduced items. Enjoyed yor video. Thank you.

Hey there! Just wanted to add that I think a lot of my fellow Americans probably relocated in the last few years (a lot of people out here have) to areas laundry lines are useful in. My family of 5 just went from an area that was kind of good to line dry in-- so long as the rich folks dodn't complain about seeing laundry lines, which they often would-- to an area much like England with little sun and a lot of rain a solid chunk of the year. We've got a HUGE country and people out here are even now sometimes just finding out the climates are vastly different from state to state!

North Yorkshire here. I swear by my molly maid, which is a pulley system rack that goes up to the utility room ceiling. Anything we don't need to dry urgently goes on the rack instead of using the dryer. It will be another month before I can reliably dry laundry outside, but I can't wait.

If you buy any kind of kibble dog food, buy it at a feed store, Atwoods or Tractor Supply. The brand I bought for years from Walmart has decreased by 5 pounds, then another 5 pounds but cost $30 !!! More per bag than it did 3 years ago. It has about doubled in price and has 10 pounds less product! I think this is another reason our local shelters are at capacity. Some of our local food banks are also giving pet food now so hopefully owners don't give their pet away because they can't afford to feed them. ❤

There is name brand, there is store brand, and then there is generic store brand... I buy generic store brand when the product is the same. You can take a beat and read the ingredients, and see that the lowest two priced items are almost always the same. That's helped me feed my family of 6.

The other thing about buying bulk is the size of your family! Because there's just me my husband and my 22 year old son who wants to move out soon I can stock up on non-perishables but seriously anything Costco size that can go bad I'm not buying it anymore. It's more cost-effective for me to buy only what we're going to eat that week and throw nothing away😅

Have a group of friends that you can split it with. Is an option. Get the benefit of the cost of buying in bulk and not the con of not being able to use it and losing the savings.

I’ve been roasting green coffee beans for 6+ yrs. I too started out using the popcorn cooker! I switched to a large cast iron and use the side burner on the bbq. Don’t do the beans inside! There is smoke and at a certain point a bad smell. It’ll smell like grass, then burning grass then the beautiful aroma of coffee! It’s heavenly. Watch cause it’ll seem like it’s taking forever then it’ll roast quickly. Know ahead of time at what point you want to stop the roasting. I prefer dark roast but not burnt. Takes seconds to burn. I use a fan and pour from pan to bowl then bowl to bowl letting the fan blow off the chaff and cool the beans. They taste best after 3 days. I store in canning jars. Sooo good! ☕️

All great information. Thank you. We love putting up tomatoes and salsa and have done it for years. It is so satisfying to see the jars all lined up on the shelf when you are done. One year we even used the peels to make tomato powder that you can use for flavoring. I do not recommend that, it is a LOT of work for a very little bit of powder, but it lasted for quite a while.

My first comment on this and I may have more. Yes everything is shrinkflation. But what I disagree with is that it shrinkflation and the price is stay in the same. Because here where I'm at they're double dipping. They're not only shrinking the product but they're increasing the prices too. Unless you get it on sale.

Not sure if this would be helpful with a humid area but we had a ridge vent and other vents on our roof to remove the hot air from the attic, that really helped with our home heating up in the afternoon. The solar attic fan has also helped a lot.

Along with size changes, keep an eye out for changes within the actual product. One of the few convenience foods I get regularly buy is chicken nuggets, and my kids actually liked the cheap-o ones better than take-out. However, the nuggets I usually buy have changed their ingredients drastically so that the flavor, texture, and even the shape of them is different even though the packaging is exactly the same. Nobody likes them. I’m either going to have to buy more expensive ones or try making my own again. 😭

I've run into this with pet food. I have a cat who is allergic to the chicken by product meal stuff they put in, so we had been doing fish and beef flavors. Over the last 2 years I've had to change brands completely for the beef and the fish flavors without chicken by product is half what it was, and I've had to quit giving him the kibble at all. Which surprised me because the cats were on a mix of 2 of the higher quality tiered foods to eliminate gluten and junk anyway and this last time I bought he started puking everything up again.

A few things I started doing is look at what I'm purchasing is there a way I can make it easily. The most ridiculous ones I found was brown sugar is white sugar with molasses added or powdered sugar blended in a coffee grinder for 12 seconds and duh. Also, jelly is just whatever juice you like with pectin and sugar added boil and there you go. Things I never thought of making I just bought because that's what I've always did. I now make my own sour cream, ghee, etc.. super simply without the extra cost. After the sticker shock of olive oil I found a local rancher and purchased suet to make beef tallow. Again very easy and made enough to last a year. I thought it would taste like beef but not at all. We really need to get back to the very basics.

Coming from a large family myself, something ive had to regretfully take a hard look at is how much i am spending on gifts. Between family, friends and my sons class's burthday parties, as well as christmas, weddings and other celebrations, i realised i was spending a small fortune. After new years i made a list with some rules of who and what occasions i will now buy for and a strict budget for how much i will spend. I reuse guft bags, have cut back on over generous spending, and got into habit of picking up small things through the year i can put away as a "bank" of modestly priced gifts rhat i can draw on when a birthday etc comes up. At christmas its tempting to do all spending in one go and wait for winter to buy the gifts in fear i will miss a more current new product that might come out the person will want. But ive realised thats not sustainable for me

I have made our own laundry soap for years - the only issue I have with it is the Borax in the recipe sometimes balls up in clumps that don't dissolve in the wash. To remedy this I put the soap in my hands first, then "sift" it between my palms when adding It to the clothes to break up the clumps. I wash everything in cold water, so I just run my hands under the fill water to rinse off the powdery residue. I'm interested in learning how to make soap sustainably without needing so many exotic inputs from the store or internet. I recently switched my cats' litter from the clumping clay to the wood pellet livestock bedding - that saved a LOT of money!

Online Fight food waste - stores are great. I don't know how it works in the US, but in Finland, this works well. The products are often not even expired. Most items are there for different reasons like the brand changing the labels, seasonal items, or leftovers from a product that a store doesn't restock. they often have makeup, hair items, toys and some have clothing. Some have their own brand made from leftover tomatoes, potatoes, or other greens that can't be sold because they don't look pleasing. I have never had a problem with it. it is great for stocking up. I save about 30% on my food costs monthly by using them. Not only online, most stores have regular clear-out days where you can find products with up to 60% discount.

I just ordered a clothesline the other day! One of those spinning ones and I’m so excited. I live in Idaho, but we should still be able to use it 8-9 months a year. We chose to do this over getting a newer dryer. It will be interesting to see how it impacts our electric bill. Years ago I used to bake bread everyday, when I switched to baking sourdough (12 years ago) I calculated that it was saving me $80 a year by not needing to buy active dry yeast. I imagine that the savings is even more now. Also, I buy bulk flour now, saves us a ton. Takes about a month to go through 25 lbs of flour, some times less time.
