Super teams.
So just to be clear. Back in the days you also had super teams. Teams like the 80s lakers, or 80s celtcis also had more than 2 super steams on their team. but this all happen organicly through drafts or trades. And this is something that I dont have a problem with.
what I do have a problem with is, player who in their prime join other super stars in order to have an easy road to a championship.
In all honesty, I cant respect that. Guys like Reggie Miller,John Stockton or Patrick Ewing never won an NBA Championship.
But they stayed loyal to their franchise and tried it the hard way. And this is something that I truly respect. Another thing that I liked back in the days, most superstars stayed with that one franchise for the majority of their career.
I mean Jordan will always be a bull because he played 12 + years for that franchise, Ewing with the Knicks, Olajuwon with the Rockets,
Malone and Stockton with the Jazz. I mean you get the idea. It was nice when the nba was more balanced and every team had their super stars. That was something that was really important to me, and I loved it that way.
The All Star game
Watching the all Star games in the 90s, I can tell you I was always looking forward to it. The best players in the league playing together
and competing to win the game. of course the first 3 quaters were a little less competitve, which means they would not try to block every shot, but you would still see some defense. The players from back in the days you wanted to prove that their conferene was better. The 4th quater was amazing, since now you could really see the best players really going at it.
Todays all star game is simply terrible. No defense what so ever. The games are super boring because all you see is players getting out of the way so that the other player can dunk the ball.
thats not what i want to see. Honestly its said what happend to my beloved all star game
uncontested dunks
It is the 1990, I am a teanager and on my wall I have posters of nba players dunking the ball on other players.
I dont know what posters of todays game look like, but I cant imagine that you will see somebody trying to block the ball on the poster.
Of course I can enjoy a nice dunk, if somebody steals the ball, and runs to the other side of the court and finishes with a slam.
But if the same player dribbles into the paint and wants to slam the ball, while the defender underneath the basket moves out of the way,
instead of trying to contest the dunk, its simply terrible.
A dunk is just so much better of you have the duell like two cowboys in a stand off. Man against man, and one second will decide who wins the battle.
If you are able to dunk the ball on a great shotblocker like alonzo mourning or mutombo, its just so much more than a dunk.
isnt that what we want to see? this intense moment, where anything can happen?
In todays game you see many players getting out of the way, simply because they dont want to be on poster.
to me that says it all. I loved guys who went for the challange, and excepted if they got dunked on every once in a while. true men to me!
Handchecking
Yes back in the days team would not score as much as they do today.
but that was totally fine, why? Because a you could enjoy tough defense, but also it was way more special if players would average 25 points per game. Simply because it was a physical challange to make it to the basket.
I dont mind if a final score is 92:90. Basketball is not only offense, but also defense. And yes it was totally fine if guys had to fight their way to the basket.
Flops.
Ok this will be a short one. With all the toughness that we as old school fans were used to, those flops are just a joke.
Just imagine someone pulling of those kind of flops in the 80s and 90s, i betcha they would be the joke of the entire league.
Rivalries
Ok the one thing I really really loved back in the days were all the intense rivalries.
The lakers vs celtics, bulls vs pistons, bulls vs the knicks, the knicks vs the heat,
you just knew that those teams hated each other, and not that I enjoy hate, but the result that we saw on the court was magic.
It was like war, but without people actually diing. it was players hustling after every ball, phsycisal intesene, exiting,
and the feeling that everything could happen.
This is something that we are really missing in todays game.

I’m 20 years old and never saw pre-2000s basketball so I looked up some old 80s and 90s playoff games to see for myself if I agreed with what the old heads are saying and I have to say I 100% do. It’s like those guys were trying to kill each other! Nobody got out of the way on dunks and guys just seemed like they were giving so much more effort. So much more entertaining. My least favorite part of today's NBA has to be load management. I was a poor, young guy back in the 90's. Even living in Illinois, a trip into Chicago and a ticket for a Bulls game was a huge part of my disposable income, but it was 100% guaranteed I was seeing MJ and Scottie play. I can't imagine how disappointed I would have been if load management was a thing back then and those two decided to take a night off. It's unreal to me how today's stars can just do that to their fans. Where's the love for the game? Where's the desire to compete? And most importantly, Where's the respect for the fans?

The All star game is an absolute Abomination today. I used to loooove the All star game. Would NOT miss it. That stopped some time between 2000 & 2010. New fans would likely be astounded how defense was played hard & competitively. It is sickening that the past several yrs how they either stand there or often get OUT of the way! It used to be completely different. There should be separate statistics kept for ASG. before when defense was played & after it had disappeared. When guys like Wilt & Jordan had highest game totals & now when 5 guys have 35 plus. ZERO comparison. None at all. Yes I know it's an exhibition, but whoever thinks this is what "fans" want to see I believe is badly mistaken. Cannot watch it. Not even the "highlights." Complete & utter joke of the game. It's almost like the NBA becomes the globetrotters for a day.

What I liked about the Milwaukee Bucks winning this year's NBA Finals was that Giannis Antetokounmpo's game is that he displays a lot of old school big man abilities. Many critics were complaining about his lack of dynamic skills translating to today's game. I often scratched my head and wondered what were they talking about? Giannis closed out game 6 in this year's Finals by dominating the paint.

The removal of hand checking changed basketball at a fundamental level. There are guys considered stars today who would have been 6th man at best before the final change to hand checking in 2004. That really put a dagger in the heart of any real defense in the NBA. The only parallel that comes to mind is if they removed off-sides in soccer. Sure, scoring would skyrocket, but it wouldn't even be the same sport any more. There should be an asterisk on all scoring records for players who spent over 50% of their career in the NBA after 2004.

You're right. The fact every good college freshman declares for the draft doesn't help the league's maturity. Jabbar played until he was a senior, Jordan played three years at UNC, the one-and-done policy has hurt the quality of the NBA in my opinion. A lot of rookies are merely teenagers.

The solution is simple Restructure how points are distributed OFFENSE: -3 point line becomes the half point line. Shots behond the line award 2-1/2 points . Shots within the line remain 2 points. -Baskets made within the paint area are now 3 points. -Assists are a 1/2 point. So a kick out to the perimeter is a 3 point shot. An assist in the paint is 3-1/2 points. DEFENSE: -Blocked shots are awarded 2 points. Blocks behond the perimeter earn 3 points. -Steals are 1 point. So a steal resulting in a breakaway dunk is a 4 point play. FOULS: -Freethrows are reduced to 1 with the exception of flagrants.

@Jimmy Jones & the Kool-Aide Crew Obviously he has talent, he is a very good player, specially in that drive and kick system but overall, for GOAT consideration, is where he lacks that type of talent and I explain why: He has not great post moves (far behind MJ, Olajuwon, Duncan, Garnett, Shaq, even Kobe). He is a stricky 3pt shooter, sometimes below average, considering he is playing in this era of 3 point shooting. Several seasons of not playing any defense despite he is capable of doing so. (a GOAT plays defense always). Ball handling not great. Too many turnovers. Disgusting flopping. Not a great jumpshooter overall. Now he has underperform in 3 playoff series were his team was favored. Teamed up with 2 of the best players int he NBA of the same conference while instantly diminishing competition in the East. The same energy people have against Durant shoul be for Lebron even tho Durant move was little bit worse.

Young man you missed an amazing period. I was there to see it when it happened. The players were less bulky and yet more physical. The Celtics half court post game was nearly unstoppable. It took the speed of the Lakers plus them manning up and being willing to engage in maximum contact to beat them 2 out of 3 times. The last Finals series we saw that matched the old physicality was 2010 Lakers Celtics. That was the end of contact basketball as we remember it.

Don't get me started with Nike and their communist control over players and what they can wear if not by them. But mainly the NFL and NBA uniforms. They're all the same colors...Dark versions. They took what they did to the University Oregon Ducks and just copied it. Feels like a generic video game. They have special ones that are occassionally kinda cool. But the main ones are just lame. No Team has their signature colors. You could buy a hat off color, and it was unique. But a jersey was their to recognize. Now you have to get up close. And Nike restricting the use of other brands...or be fined or punished with money you earn to be playing. Who owns who? You got Nike with all that anti slavery hype, working child slaves and telling predominantly Black players what they can wear as if they own them. Then hire activist players to show off to hurt anyone that points the finger at them. NBA is just as greedy, too.

@@MrRyan-wu4jx "strategy evolving"? It completely changed the defensive game the way we knew it, as intended. A RB carrying 20 or 30 a game didn't change football that much. If a NFL team has a horse for a RB he WILL CARRY the ball 30 times+, it is STILL an option, not a rule change. The equivalent in football is if the LB's could no longer line up at the line of scrimmage or even just behind it.

Definitely one of the best video! Props, Sean! The basic sense of competitiveness has been cremated by the rules skewering a baseline of defense, a lack of pride to even take on dunkers for fear of overamped flagrant fouls, and unwillingness to be franchise players for the sake of trading it in for "cheap" rings. The dumbing down of the public through rehashing the same stories and formulaic nature of popular franchises have made their way over from Hollywood to the sports leagues doing the pro-wrestling "push" (via rules changes, covering up PED/other cheating scandals) of long-time superstar players while turning the playstyle into a homogeneous snooze-fest of uncontested dunks and incessant 3's.

John Starks over 2, 3 Bulls with that left handed dunk? There isn't a player in today's game who would even attempt that. These boys these days don't play tough - except for Westbrook. A point guard leading a team in rebounds? That's because no one else is going hard after the ball like Westbrook. I love watching him play. He plays hard.

Yep: Jog together to the 3pt line -- chuck! Jog back to the other 3pt line -- chuck! Certainly not a 90-foot game these days. When I got back into the NBA a few years ago I was intrigued when I heard about the Warriors long range artillery and thought "Wow. Unique approach." I soon found out it was not unique at all and it became way less interesting. I'd love to see more variety in the league. Sure, have a great 3pt shooting team that relies on it, but how about a team with a force of nature a center, a team with smothering defense, a run and gun team, one that passes and stresses ball movement to open up a great shot... Anyway... I'm old.

I 1000% agree with each point you made. I think personally the issue is that they wanted more scoring to please casual fans, which has take the emotion and physicality out of the game. And I think that the Malice in the Palace had something to do with them taking the physical nature out of the game. I love basketball and the NBA but it is almost unbearable to see guys on a fast break pull up for 3 instead of attacking the rim. Big guys never use their size to their advantage. And I hate the guys in their primes want to join up with other superstars in their primes to take competition out of the game. I know all of this is about the league making more entertaining but it has not made it fun for the hard core fan.

due to the malice at the palace, the league made changes to sterilize it's image. harsher penalites to deter fighting, stricter policies against players taunting or making contact after the whistle, so yes, in that sense, today's nba is soft, however, the idea that today's players are physically soft and that the 90s games were full contact cage fights is more twisted nostalgia than truth.

Started watching the nba in 1983. As a young kid my first basketball memory was Dr.J and his 76ers winning the nba title. As an old school fan, I hate watching the nba mostly due to all the 3point shooting. Because of the 3, other aspects i use to love(midrange, post game) is all but gone from today's game. I also can not stand all the damn flopping players do today's either. Certain players like James Harden, I honestly don't enjoy watching him play at all because of the endless flopping on almost every shot attempt. The game rewards guys like Harden now and its frustrating. Instead of keeping an exciting game going its constantly slowed down by the offensive players trying to draw a cheap foul.
