Engineer explains 7 reasons why Plug-in-Hybrids - such as the Lexus RX 450h+ - are the best solutions in 2024/2025. With EVs not quite mainstream yet and hybrids not sufficient for maximum fuel efficiency, PHEVs are the best of both worlds. This is especially true of the Lexus RX 450h+, and David explains in detail why that is the case.

Regular hybrids still make way more sense as they are much cheaper and can still net you 40 - 50 MPG. Much smaller batteries meaning cheaper replacement and smaller environmental footprint. Toyota has said that for every plugin hybrid, they can make 10 regular hybrids. The plug-in hybrid Mazda CX-90 is like $10k more than the regular CX-90 and Dave Coleman has even said that when the plug in battery is low on power, the plug-in hybrid system acts as a regular hybrid system but it has to drag around a very heavy battery. So that begs the question, why doesn't Mazda just make a regular hybrid already if their plug in hybrid system reverts to regular hybrid operation when the battery is nearly depleted...I needed a CX-30 hybrid getting 200 HP and 45 MPG like yesterday

"The world needs a mixture of different solutions" This is something that EV owners do not understand. Most of us car ppl like our cars and having more options is better, but we have a section of the population cheering on the destruction of ICE cars, even if that means the lower classes can't buy a car because of rising production costs. Let us be happy there is choice.
@nwsvndr
@nwsvndr 5 күн бұрын
Lower classes can't buy new cars, or at least they shouldn't be buying new cars (it's a terrible investment - it'll keep you lower-class for life). There are PLENTY of good options for ICE used cars. Cars last 20-30 years. So selling new ICE engines today means we are stuck with those ICE engines well into the future. Why not give rebates to incentivize the move to hybrids (as well as plug-in hybrids and electric) - let people buy full-ICE cars if they like, but let's give big incentives for people to do what we know to be socially-optimal.

You can never appreciate the superiority and goodness of the 2024 Lexus RX450h+ until you own one. I have had LS500, I currently own LX 570, I have had different Mercedes Benz. I am skeptical about EVs but decided to get the 450h+ and I have no regret. The 14 gallons tank gives me 500 miles while full charge gives 37 miles. You can’t beat that. Full tank cost me approximately $45 while full charge usually cost $2.60. My commute to the office from my home is about 6 miles so I basically use EV mode most of the time. The only time I use hybrid mode using gas is when I drive more than 36 miles. The car drives excellently and very quiet too. I am pretty sure the resale value is going to be great going by the fact that it is currently scarce to come by and by the time most people know about its efficiency and practicality, it would be in high demand.

Hello. I agree with you, but here in Norway plugin hybrids has got so high taxes that they are nearly impossible to buy and from 2025 the taxes will increase even more. Our son bought a Toyota Rav4 plugin hybrid and paid aprox 75.000 USD in Norwegian Kroner, while my wife and I have bought a Lexus RZ Executive model and paid aprox 60.000 USD, but in Norway the infrastructure for evs is good, and for us and our driving the range for the RZ is perfect and with normal driving here in Europe the range of the RZ has a perfect balance for us where you don't have too heavy batteries you normally don't need. We bought the RZ because I got disabled and paralyzed from a vaccine. Now I'm not allowed to drive myself and got hypersensitive for vibrations and road noice where after some testing the RZ was the only car I can drive as a passanger without being totally exhausted. But our authorities have forgotten a lot of industries where people need heavy towing and partly offroad driving in their work, and because of the higher taxes vehicles needed for this like the new Toyota LC 250 will be too costly at more than 120.000 USD and might go up to aprox 150.0000 USD as a 2 seater work truck. This is a completely disaster because we don't have any zero emizsion vehicles for such transport and people have to keep their older vehicles all too long. The regulation with higher taxes was made already when I bought my 2018 LC 150, and the authorithies told we would have zero emission vehicles for all industries in 2025, but we haven't got usable commercial vehicles for such needs. Because of the huge increase of vehicles on the roads the environmental effect of the taxfree evs might not be that big, but passenger transport and commercial vehicles for transport on public roads near the cities with evs are successful for local emissions But to give massive increased taxes on vehicles for industries the society is depending of isn't wise, such as contractors, water and sewage, and vehicles needed in geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations.

Nice review David,Toyota builds the best hybrids hands down, and has a track record of over 25 years with the Prius sedan, the EV charging infrastructure in Canada is a joke in the last 5 or so years i have traveled to almost every major city in Canada and you see very few charging specific places , secondly i live in Winnipeg and you know how extreme out winters get here and EV owners who charge at home or work say in the winter months her when it reaches - 25 to 30 it takes at least 1 hour to pre condition the battery to charge unless you remember to tell it to do so and from a full charge one woman with a model long range RWD told me here range in these temps never exceeds 60% range from full at these temps and she charges and parks her car in a garage, even though we have the 2nd cheapest hydro rates in Canada next to Quebec, i would still buy a PHEV before an BEV , in Manitoba we get $4000 rebate on top of the federal $5000 rebate , the silly part is there's a time limit on it, I don't know what the rebate is for a PHEV, it is still better than a BEV and my daily driving is 100 kms , i think solid state batteries will be the way to go over Lithium ion in the future Wpg to Vancouver you'd only spend a max of 1-1 1/2 hrs charge time in that distance including B&B breaks and stretch your legs, niece wants a new Grand Highlander and got scared off from the recall from the airbag curtain issue, they'll get one she loves the V6 with 8 speed auto they have now, it also has some 260kms on it, the crazy thing is it still runs like new and gets crazy fuel economy, better than the Subaru they had before it, great video 👍

Here in New Zealand, PHEV, EV and Diesel vehicles are subject to a Road User Tax depending on the weight of the vehicle ranging from $72($44USD) - $600($367 USD) per 1000 kilometres, Petrol and HEV vehicles are exempt as the road user tax is paid at the pump, this makes the HEV more attractive just on the lack of admin alone as there are hefty fines for not paying the RUC tax.

@Unchainedmaple888
@Unchainedmaple888 6 күн бұрын
Hopefully not too long because I'd like one but not if it takes like three years. It would be a shame for Toyota to make an all new performance automatic transmission only to put it in one car. Hopefully within those three years Toyota decides to ditch the hideous amounts of gloss black plastic in the interior that doesn't belong anywhere near a performance car like that.

I don’t disagree with you at all, but I would emphasize that you will be using fuel so don’t buy a plug-in thinking you could get away with not doing that. There are maintenance cycles. They have to run on the engine when you need physical heat because many plug-in hybrids do not have heat pumps, so keep these things in mind especially if you live in Northern climates. They are a great solution and if they’re well crafted and efficient then you should be able to get a small amount of all EV range anywhere from 30 to 40 miles and your efficiency because you’re faithfully plugging it inshould remain very high reducing your fuel cost for the vehicle. 10:05

David, I think waiting 6 months to use "old gas" is too long of an interval for the engine to be going without any use. Machines need to be used to stay in good working order. I think using the gas engine about once a month would be beneficial to the engine over the long term. The six months time interval would be good just to change the oil.
@cablebrain9691
@cablebrain9691 5 күн бұрын
I imagine that most people would run the engine at least a little bit, here and there, maintaining the working parts of it. But one might still need to make a conscience effort to use the entire tank of gas. In this type of scenario, I’d likely change the oil once yearly.

I have to kindly disagree as PHEV doesn't offer that much of the benefit over BEV in battery cost, as the battery costs much more than a HEV and it's mpg benefits isn't that much over a HEV while costing significantly more. PHEV is much closer to my eyes with the so called ER-BEV that the border between the two seems indistinct. I believe hybrid vehicles, HEV, PHEV will see an enormous cost performance benefit if they switch to LFP/LFPM battery over from the current NMH/NMC battery chemistry.

I prefer gas-only cars for now... and also the government not telling me what to do. I don't have my own house yet so there's no where to charge. Lugging around any extra battery weight, even if it's just a normal hybrid, seems excessive for my normal commute. The infrastructure is not there. We don't even have affordable housing. If we really care about the environment then we should all reduce our usage and waste.

The battery warranty is 10 years or 240K. If you do ~50-70KM a day the PHEV makes a HUGE difference to your gas bill. We bought the Executive package in Feb 2023 and then I heard that the PHEV was coming to Canada. I switched to it for about $2-4K more. It was definitely worth spending the extra. I figure I have already saved $5-600 in gas. By end of year 1 I will have paid for my Chargepoint Charger. After about 3 years the car will have saved the difference in gas.
