I am a knife junkie and love videos like this. An old guy at over 70 now, I have carried about every knife and combo there is from the obscenely heavy Leatherman 'everything in it but a hammer' Tool down to a sharpened file in my fingernail clipper. But over the years I have always come back to my little Victorinox Classic XD that is with me everywhere (I have owned maybe six over the years.) My other Go-To is the Leatherman Wave. Both are bullet-proof and long-proven dependable. That said, carry on. You're doing good work here. Side note: I bought one of the first Leathermans that Tim Leatherman made. That was a long time ago. Sadly, someone needed it more than me and took advantage of my involuntary generosity.

I started carrying the Gerber to work with me. Cut a couple of hoses off of brass or stainless hose barbs and you destroy the tip of whatever EDC knife you're carrying in a big hurry. I don't carry it outside of work, but it has saved me a lot of sharpening time, and the company I work for pays for the blades as supplies, so... win-win!

I had and loved the Gerber number of years ago and lost it working in the backyard. I bought a couple of replacements and went on with my life. Several years later I was digging in the yard and found it. The blade was completely rusted but the the rest was in pristine shape, I still carry it today.

I have EDC'd a utility knife for 6-7 years now, like you said I realized that most of what I used my pocket knives for was opening boxes, and I was dulling them. Current one is the small "Husky" branded one from Home Depot, where I picked up two 75 packs of replacement blades for (I think) $12. I am set for cutting boxes for probably the rest of my life.

I switched to a utility knife a few months back. I mean...I love my Spyderco's, Benchmade's etc etc but I honestly got tired of sharpening my blades. I purchased a Tecni Edge (Amazon 03-731) and it's perfect. I switch out a new blade every few weeks. It's very convenient.

Thank you for these videos. I have been carrying at the minimum a utility blade for the past 8 years and I can't say enough about having one available for use. I usually have a Gerber EAB or my rexford rut and then I decide if or what regular knife goes out the door with me. My work knife is almost always a utility knife and if I'm carrying my sebenza or something fun well that knife is mostly to make me happy I have it with me. Probably im the worst knife guy for that but facts are facts. Can't wait for more videos

3:06 Why not just resharpen the utility blades? I do it all the time, takes me less than 2 minutes to get them back to shaving sharp even when I'm only using a piece of micro grit sandpaper on any hard flat surface. It's still fascinating to me to think of how effective the marketing has been over the years to get people to fully and blindly accept the concept of disposability on things that could be reused over and over again for years (if not exceeding the life span of the user/ consumer).

For my keychain: I’ve had the Screw pop in multiple versions for years. Love the minimalness of it. Also have a Gil Tel CeraKote aluminum one. Love it. I have done this for years and it comes in handy so much more than youd think . Not taking work into consideration , which is actually why I started carrying one in the first place. The most important thing about a " utility knife " is that it holds the blade well . I know people have gotten messed up because the blade locks are garbage on some folders

I have a foldable switch blade thing from milwaukee for $6 I got from home depot this spring. It's my favorite knife of all time. Best hack I have ever had. Im not a guy who is going to sit down every week and sharpen my knife every week. I got a 50 pk of Stanley blades for $20 it's not a lifetime supply, but it's a 2 year purchase possibly. I got 1 of these for my Old Man only its a Husky!!! He sees me pull my all the time as I come over and help with home reno projects all the time. I think I got this idea from your channel a couple of years ago. They wanted $40 for the knife handle on amazon which was crazy. The disposable knife idea. never left my head. It's honestly the best knife for someone who wants to cut sh*t and move on. Thx!!!

I like the Gerber EAB lite. I run a digital press that uses giant 500 lb rolls of paper. The rolls of paper come in 2 packs sandwiched together and wrapped in thick cardboard. Gotta have a thin blade like a utility knife to get between the rolls and slice around the entire roll to free it from the packaging. The Gerber EAB is great because it's still small enough to fit in a coin pocket, but with the blade open, you definitely have a great grip for jobs that are more heavy duty than opening packages. Having replaceable blades just makes sense when slicing that much cardboard day in, day out. I'm a fan of Lenox carbide coated blades. They are more expensive, but I'm still on my first one from a 10 pack. Over 3 weeks of slicing and separating paper rolls, opening ink boxes, and sometimes slicing rubber mats for fun, this blade is still razor sharp. If I was cutting carpet or something, I'd stick with a box of cheap blades and replace em every ten minutes. For an EDC pocket knife, the more expensive carbide blades are totally worth it IMO.

I have an EDC primary knife and EDC utility knife that I carry for work and I EDC a flavor of the day knife from my collection for when I'm not at work. These are my reasons why I carry both and it's pretty much the same reasons he mentions in the video. I use to carry just my EDC to work but I had to sharpen it everyday. I cut a lot of very large appliance boxes at work and they are very thick and dense. I tried using many different types of knives, grinds, metals and styles but on large appliance boxes nothing works better than a utility blade. So I started carrying the Gerber because the small size allowed me to carry it in my watch pocket without interfering with my EDC. It's a perfect combination for me. What I'm looking for now is a smallish utility knife that I can one-hand open because I don't always have 2 hands free to open a blade. As the saying goes, to each his own. 🤙 BTW, very good review and looking forward to more. Subscribed. 🤙

I’ve carried the Gerber for quite a long time now. The original was recalled by then due to a design flaw that would allow the blade to fall out while cutting. I swapped to the newer design and carry it literally every single day. As an industrial maintenance mechanic, I used it quite often and replacing the blade made life so much easier. I recommend Bostich bi-metal blades for their lower cost, edge retention, and sharpness.

When I first started carrying as a middle school student since I spent many times walking home, and then to what I worked(I did law care with a push mower and Chinese scissors), couldn't afford a knife so I started carrying the carpet knife, the blades were cheap and plentiful, have since grown older (by many many........many years hahaha) and as a Executive Security officer and weekend Survival Instructor I still find a amazing amount of use from the same flip carpet cutter, its stupidly has "Golden Sword" scratched onto the side from when I was younger as saw this blade as my ultimate badass weapon. It's kinda nice to see how the concept has caught on and become something that people are actually considering and using their EDC

I work in construction and carried a folding knife for years and found I was using it for the worst tasks possible for a knife because it was convenient. I cut drywall, removed carpet, opened packages, removed electrical wire sheathing, scored tin for flashing, etc... For me, the Gerber EAB Lite is perfect. It carries in my change pocket. I don't have to fish for it. It allows a full four fingered grip but also allows for a pointer finger along the spine hold for scoring. I can carry an extra blade in my wallet and it saves the blades on my Leatherman. It can supplement a heavy EDC carry for work or be used in a minimalist EDC carry along with key chain and wallet tools. The only time I use a knife is for slicing and gutting.

Great video. I need to look into one of those. This concept is why I love my SAK. I use the pen blade on virtually everything, and save the bigger one for when I need a longer reach and try not to dull it. Plus it's still has multi tool capabilities, is not scary at all to bystanders, has good enough ergonomics, is relatively small, and is easy to re-sharpen. An SAK paired with one of these and you will be unstoppable.

Thanks. I've carried a knife for decades but always had concerns about dulling the blade on cardboard and other high-wear materials. A few years ago I started carrying the Milwaukee utility knife that has the bit holder on the other end. (BTW, I used the screwdriver as recently as two days ago; the liner lock on the bit driver is a great feature.). Anyway, being able to use the blade without thinking because it's so easy to replace changed how I use knives and I'd never be without one again. The specific Milwaukee I carry is not really classic EDC - it's sort of on the big and thick end of the spectrum - but it carries an extra blade so I have four edges at any given time. There's a lot to be said for carrying a utility knife in addition to a "real" knife.

Stanley 99E: The very definition of elegance in simplicity. It's about as long as your hand (so it's not easily concealable) with a simple ergonomic shape, solid metal (no compromising grade-school plastic here), built like a frikkin' tank with a smooth sliding mechanism that'll advance the blade to five different lengths, held together by one Philips head screw, has a rear compartment that'll hold a bunch of other blades, a hole in the back for a lanyard, and will last forever. If you don't mind the size, this tool is all pros, no cons.

Another option are replaceable bladed knives like the pirantas and the outdoor edge razor lite EDC. Both have shave-sharp blades that are pretty cheap but more like a proper knife. Blades are a little more expensive and both cater to actually skinning game but many also carry them for general utility. I use the razor lite as replacing the blade is a bit more straight forward.

The Workpro is crazy good for the price. I used a grinding wheel on a Dremel tool to open up a thumb space for easier one handed use which took it from good to great. It is designed for right handed use but that may be the only shortcoming.

Picked up a "$4 for the whole box" at a yard sale a while back. Had a fold up with the names of the fathers of hand to hand combat engraved on the blade. Sold it to a friend for $20. The box also had three fold up/ slide utility knives. Keeping the Stanley utility sport blade. Utility/ pocket knife combo. Also had around 10 more basic box cutters, a few multi tools and some basic pocket knives. Already made my money back, the rest is profit.

Have been carrying a Irwin folding utility knife 4-5 years now. I have found that Stanley’s carbide utility blade has a much longer service life than just about every other blade I have tried. And I use it everyday.

I carry the screw pop one and I love it bc the normal reasons but it also is held in place with a magnet so in case you drop something...like keys down a drain....bam magnet....and I've picked up a 5-6oz knife with it before.

Taylor congrats on the numbers. Another good video, after your last video on these knives I went and grabbed a Gerber one from Lowes. My regular knife is a swiss army and I break it out for all kinds of stuff during a day. Figured the utility blade would make quicker work of boxes and some other cutting tasks. I'll see how it goes, look forward to the round up. Chris L

In my case, i enjoy Edc'ing large blades whether fixed or folding. In addition, I Edc a leatherman. So i already have at least 2 blades on me. Adding a small razor knife like one of those solves the last part of the equation for uses under 3in (as in the leatherman). That way, every day i have access from 6-7in, down to tiny razor knife blades. The cool part is it is easy to forget I'm even wearing a knife!

I picked up a Keybar last year and added the Multitool to it. Holds one of those mini utility knife blades. I, hands down, use it far more often than the SAK or Leatherman that I EDC.

A trick for EDC utility blades: The cutting edges are absolutely smooth as manufactured. This doesn’t provide the best cutting for most things you’ll cut in the daily. Make a couple passes on a fine sharpening stone to add minuscule “saw blade” texture to the edge.

I bought a Kabolt utility knife pack that also came with a mini utility knife, like 1/4rd the size. It has a storage space for holding 6 spare titanium coated mini blades. I pocket that as my EDC and does fit on a keychain nicely.

My right pants pocket has: a butane lighter, a 2" piece of hot melt glue, and an OLFA® 5019 Stainless Steel Auto-Lock Utility Knife 9mm blade. I cut it shorter, to 4 1/4" overall to fit better in pocket. And then snap off blades that extend too far. I also replaced the pocket clip with a small blob of hot melt to keep more blade length. One blade lasts many months of everyday use. One hand open/close, stainless, resharpen with moonstones as needed, and very small size. = EDC

I have three of the Gerber EAB and haven't ever had that happen. The first one I got actually can open with an inertial flick, which I like; the other two are too stiff to do that. I've been trying to find something to loosen the pivots on those but don't have anything able to do that.

This is a great idea. I have to open boxes almost every day at work. This would be a great answer to saving my nice CRKT from this duty. I also carry a neck knife every day as a just in case back up but this little utility blade is brilliant. I like that you can toss the blade in the trash if you need to go somewhere that restricts carrying a knife. Thanks for the great suggestion!!

I've been carrying the Gerber for years and using it as a money clip. This has been in conjunction with using a solid aluminum RFID proof wallet that doesn't have room for any amount of cash along with all of the cards and ID that I have to carry. Although singular in use, it can often get into places that others can't when under the limited scrutiny of a wand metal detector. Pull your stuff out of your pockets for inspection (money side up) and carry on.

They are one of the more expensive, but having spent a while in a receiving department opening massive numbers of boxes the Lenox Gold blades stay sharp so much longer than the cheap ones that they actually save you money over time.... as well as saving you the time of changing your blades as often.

Oh, and my favorite utility knife to carry is the Stanley 0-10-810. It's heavy compared to the others you're showing, but the ergonomics combined with quickly being able to move the blade into position with one hand make it the most convenient I've used. When I carry it I do replace my primary blade with it.

My chavez chub should be coming in the mail in the next two days, a little pricier than any other utility on the market, but as a pretty serious knife and weapons collector, having a nice knife that I want to carry but don’t have to worry at all about the blade will be very nice. Easily makes it worth spending the extra money, despite the fact that “all utility knives do the same thing”

I started to carry a multitool after i cut my thumb opening a blister of some JVC headphones. I started with cheap( yet decent quality) noname MT, then Leatherman Surge, Skeletool CX and now Swistool Spirit plus ratchet. Once me and few coworkers remained blocked in the room we were eating because the door handle broken. I grabed my Surge and opened the door in 2 seconds.. Mostly i use multitools to small gardening.
