Just want to say I appreciate your channel a lot! It has been a great source of information for me in a world where there isn't a lot of metal bass information out there, relatively speaking. You've influenced my playing quite a bit in multiple facets, and MBM has been a big part of that. Whatever you decide to do going forward, I'll be along for the ride!

I've been watching your videos for well over a year and I really appreciate the work you do. I'm having a hard time properly articulating what my expectations are for your channel; What I can say is that you are currently the only channel I follow in regards to learning about bass. I find that non-metal bassists don't interest me at all; I like their music, they have talent, but I prefer my "instructors" to understand the music I enjoy and play. As to your later points, I don't really care that other channels are "already doing a certain type of lesson or topic"...I want the metal version of that, and I want it from you.

Thank for the straight forward talk! I think live streams would be very awesome!! And maybe doing mods live or high end bass reviews or just bass reviews in general. I know there are other channels that review basses but it’s still cool to have options out there. I do look forward to MBM to come, there’s usually not to much cool things to look forward to on mondays I see when you post something and can’t wait to get home and sit down and watch the video. Let’s get a tour of the crib!! And see your basses! I want to learn how to mod so badly!! Also been wanting to put a EMG pickup in my MM bass but don’t know what the best one is for that classic tone is.

I googled and searched KZfaq for “Rodney McG skeleton key bass”. That is something I would be interested in, but it wasn’t clear which KZfaq video had it in the past. Sorry I don’t have any ideas on metal bass Monday’s. I liked tuning into it live, but the numbers on people rewatching a live stream video are probably dismal. Something tells me that gear and song reviews get more views than theory and lessons. I would love for you to do a deep dive into learning a bass line of a particular song. What makes the bass part great, why you should learn it, how to play the different parts, and what scales they are based off of.

You do have great content in your channel! We have been back to our regular jamming with our band. Thanks to all of your insights, I have been working on my tone and it was pretty obvious on our last show a couple of weeks ago! Our sound guy, he’s actually our guitarist, kept on saying that he could here me a lot more with all those mids and clanks in my tone! My amps were less buried than before and since it was an outside show, people were still able to here me from further because the mids got lost less than the sub or bass from my tone. I still have some things to work on with my tone… Here, in Canada, we are also starting to get shows going but venues are so limited to the number of people attending… we are still hoping for a reopening as it was before the sh*t hit the fan!

If you're having a hard time coming up with new material for a new metal bass monday, you could try repeating some of the topics. as you said an 80 episode back log is quite a lot and for new viewers (and even some of us older ones) it could be hard finding what we're looking for. So I think many people would like to see you going through some older topics, maybe updated, maybe with different examples or applications, either as a way to make it easier for new viewers to learn new techniques or a way for others to go "oh yeah I forgot about that I should try that again"
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 2 жыл бұрын
It's not only new ideas, but it's ones that can be accomplished in a specific time period and in that format. I consider revisiting some things, but I think I may go thr route of exploring things further, and then being able to point to past videos for people to dive deeper into. I appreciate the input.

Hey Rodney I’ve been watching since the beginning (thank you!) and here’s my 2 cents: I like it when you have your bass in hand and teach concepts all bassists should know. I don’t think there’s enough of that to on your show. For example, while I’m a “metal” bassist, I find I’m learning much more from Mark at Talking Bass, and here’s why: he methodically teaches basics like the importance of chord tones, for example. He’ll start out with a brief description of why a technique is important, then get right to it by demonstrating it, with a click track, and provide a link with a pdf of tabs to use. Side note: I find the tabs helpful. Anyway, I’ve learned a lot about music theory from that guy. I’d like to see you focus much more on specifics, like modes, or when you gave a fantastic lesson(s) on the art of tapping. For example, long ago you focused on using 3 fingers, and one finger (you like the middle) and that blew my kind because NOBODY else out there explained that like you did! All the rest of the stuff I just skip through. I guess I’m trying to say I’d like more concentrated focus on just playing the bass; arpeggios, diff fingerings, walking bass lines (for metal?), and whereas Mark isn’t a “metal” guy, you could focus on how all of these basics apply to metal? Not that you don’t do that here, but just more of it? Thanks again, I do enjoy your show.
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 2 жыл бұрын
Really appreciate the input. I'll keep it in mind. I will consider some new approaches, but the lesson material i've been putting out, etc, seems to be the least popular of all. And the stuff you skip though may be worth a repeat visit. There's more there than you might realize!

Here's something I've observed the last 4 weeks or more; even though I've been subscribed for a long time & have notifications turned on - I'm not getting them. Not just for MBM's, but any of Rodney's video's. When (on my laptop) when I click on the KZfaq Premium logo at the upper left, my screen fills up different video's that YT thinks would be of interest but most of these are from channels I subscribe to. When I click on my notifications, I see my list of what channel posted a new video. But I haven't seen you're channel in either of these areas. It was to the point where yesterday I was like "Hey wait, where the hell is Rodney's videos? Has he not posted something in a long time?" So I had to do a specific search to find your channel, click on your video list and THEN I saw that yes, you have been posting new content - which kinda pissed me off that YT is either glitching on my end or their system is doing this intentionally. So I'm not sure if this just an isolated incident with my YT account or perhaps this is happening to other subscribers as well. Has anyone else experienced the same thing?
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 2 жыл бұрын
You're not the only person to tell me that. Only 8% of subscribers are seeing the videos. It goes a ling with what i said in the video. If a video doesn't do well or get interaction, youtube starts burying the channel, even if you are subscribed. It's super frustrating.
@jackshittle
@jackshittle 2 жыл бұрын
@@RodneyMcG What shame. All the work & time put into these video w/ quality content & YT can't even notify me/us that it's up? I wonder if there is a way for YT to correct this or if YT will keep its inner workings & algorithm shrouded in mystery? Anyway, for now I'll just make it a habit to manually go to you're channel to watch videos - which by the way are always top notch. Thanks for putting the term "Wank Tool" in the title of one of your vids as simply reading those two words made me literally lol.

I would pay 5 or $10 a month to be able to access all the content you already put out. I find trying to sort through everything on KZfaq is difficult if not impossible. I have been a bass player for over 25 years. I bought one of these Ibanez 7-string basses, and I love it. The neck is very comfortable considering the sheer size, and the addition of the high f just gives that much more range to work with. The string action is nice and low, and the tone is clear and singing through all registers. My only caveat is that knowing theory and having some experience on a four or five string will be really helpful, as Rodney states in this video. TLDR: If you're an experienced bass player and want to branch out into an instrument that will open up multiple possibilities for chord voicings, bass lines and extended range playing, you will not be disappointed.

Congrats on 80 episodes, 7 string is definitely not mine thing, but i do respect if you want to play 7,10,1000 or 1 string bass, as long as it works for you, its fine. Best wishes, looking forward for another 80 episodes and even more (sorry for trash english)

Whatever you do I’m down for. I like the shred shit, theory stuff and everything in between. KZfaq is a rough thing to pull off. I imagine it is like being in a band and trying to make it. Lots of luck, lots of playing the game. I think doing things on a strict schedule would suck. Worst case you can go the Davie504 route and go from being a stellar player who makes videos to a meme guy. Worked for him 😁

Livestream or bi-weekly sounds reasonable 🙂 maybe introduce some news from the scene. Less prep time but still content with your identity

I'm thinking that maybe a good direction. I also think the podcast will fill that hole a bit. That one will be a weekly show.

Sorry I am late. I didn't really start looking for a 7 string bass until I found Asterism. To cover some of the parts, they're written and performed as 7 string bass. I know there are workarounds but when I'm ready there are actually plenty of lower cost options for a 7 string bass - oddly enough it's the top tier manufacturers who are more hit and miss with having even more than one model of bass 7 if they put one in the catalog that year.

Hi Rodney. Your channel is great! No need to force yourself make a video every week. Just call the next the one Metal Bass #81 and release it whenever it's ready and you're happy with it. I'll be here watching whatever comes out whenever it comes out. Keep up the great work!

The other thing about the timing of recent channel face time decline is that gigs are returning, hence so is practice. That means it is likely that folks are asleep? Or jobs replacing gigs have folks working?

It's actually something I've been gradually watching over a number of months. I don't make knee jerk reactions or anything, so I let things go for a while because slumps happen every once in awhile oh, and that's just the way things are. But when it was proven to not be a temporary swing, but an overall trend that's what I knew it was time for some changes. You could definitely be onto something though, that would compound it even more.

Is there possibility to review some of Darkglass equipment? All I see around YT are some hips and nerds, but no bass concious metal musicians take on this brand.

Hmm, I would think it would be covered comopletely by now. I can look into it, but I did a outreach to Darkglass a long while back and they didn't seem really interested in new reviews. If someone I know wants to lend some out, maybe i'll give them a shot

Zero fret was definitely an attraction. I'm a big fan. And the top string is f, but I can definitely see a case for changing that tuning for some pieces.

7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 dwarves. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby.

2 Immediate thoughts come to mind (I'm currently at 13:12 in the video). Firstly, what is Metal Bass Monday? And what is it's remit? You do a wonderful job of getting a huge variety of content under the MBM umbrella and maybe the fickle world of the YooChoobz (and it's neatly separated audiences) is not quite "getting it" or able to process the way the topics change into algorithms and demographics. The second one is this, around the world (to a large degree, check your viewers countries to see for sure) people are coming out of varying degrees of lockdowns and staying in/at home and are now eager to get out and are leaving behind those pastimes they were so involved with whilst they were under lockdown or something similar. You may find that the pendulum will swing back in this particular case once everyone has got the "party with friends and family" out of their systems. Hope this helps my friend, thank you for what you do and good luck with your channel.

I enjoy metal bass,but I will say using double thumbing and all other techniques improve all forms of music.I think dig in on scales.patterns. picking hand techniques.❤also cover some intricate victor wooten songs.or some archspire basslines.ppl dig that I know I do.So if you play and tab ppl enjoy that.They can learn new techniques from them.

I use my extended range instruments more as composition tools. They have a purpose and can sometimes make things a lot simpler if you understand the neck do to the added verticality. My only issue is I have kind of small hands lmao i have to do a little extra work with them. Other than that I like them, but I still have standard ones and short scales too.
