Bend is more expensive than Sacramento, Califonia where all the bay area residents are flocking to and driving home prices up. I hate to say this, but it's not that Bend's attractiveness is that it has a river that flows through it, but families fleeing crime and homelessness feel secure in a white affluent suburbia.

Well, I was born there and lived there most of my life. If it's any encouragement to you, we have always said that Californians are ruining bend. That's nothing new. In the '80s you would hear people talk about how Ben just doesn't like it used to be. So even though you think the culture is ruined, it's simply transformed. And it will continue to do so. You have to find where the secret value is in Bend to do well there. You do that? That town will always be your friend.

7 Things you ACTUALLY wish you knew before moving to Bend: 1) Realtors and Developers sell the "Bend Experience" haaaaaard! Any video that you watch from a realtor/real estate company (like this one) needs to be taken with a grain of salt. 2) Have a place to live and a job lined up before you plan to move. Home prices are high and with the restrictions on providing personal letters to a homeowner when trying to purchase a home, realtors advise their clients to just accept the highest offer (which is always over asking). The rental market is insane and I've read MANY stories of people taking months to find a rental. Of course I don't understand how anyone would move to a new town and not have a place to live but whatever. 3) Many people work from home for companies outside of bend which is why there are so few higher level jobs in town. However, thankfully due to the pandemic that evidently made many people lazy, EVERYWHERE is hiring. 4) Infrastructure is not keeping up! There are potholes on almost every road, traffic congestion is a thing in many parts of town and there is more emphasis on building homes than figuring out a way to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles on the road. 5) There is only ONE hospital to care for all of Central Oregon (relatively speaking). 6) Making friends is not easy! This isn't one big loving community where you're going to be filling up your social calendar. Of course your age, hobbies, personality all play a factor so it's easier for some, more difficult for others. 7) There are so many people flocking to Central Oregon that the outdoorsy lifestyle is taking a bit of a hit. Permits for everything (parking, hiking, paddle boarding/kayaking). There's a new reservation system for scheduling your time in nature (certain trails) and you'll be fined if you find yourself on one of these trails outside of your reservation. This might sound dramatic and this does not apply to the majority of trails out here but it's been a real bummer. In closing, I know this is a pessimistic list and I'm not trying to sell Bend short. I love it here, loved it more when I first moved though, and wanted to provide a list more applicable to living here than the list of "things I wish I knew before moving but really it's a spin on reasons why you should live here". I believe most people move here due to the seasons (winter is long and cold), outdoor lifestyle and family-oriented environment. In the handful of years I've lived here I've noticed a change. So I'll close with the best piece of advice for anyone thinking of relocating here... DON'T believe all the hype and think this is some amazing promised land to fix the problems you're leaving behind. DO leave all your baggage at the border. What's the point of moving somewhere new and behaving in the exact same way? Embrace your new town by aiming not to make it into what you left in your rearview mirror.

Thanks for the comment, man. I try to be as realistic as possible. A lot of people I meet around town that have watched my videos agree. Please let me know if you feel I oversell bend. I think with the demand that we are seeing, this place is pretty cool. Yes there are cons, and it’s not perfect but I’d take it over a lot of cities, in a lot of states. Also, you run a graphic design business correct? I’d actually love to talk. I need some work done, let me know what services you provide. Staying local is always better in my opinion.

@@modernlivingoregon6721 to be clear, I agree with you on many of your points. I think Bend is great! I just didn’t appreciate the click bait thumbnail because I don’t think you mentioned anything about “time and money wasted”. I feel it’s important to be transparent in business but understand that listing realistic information that could be labeled as a con doesn’t make your job easier. Just curious, do you disagree with any of the things I listed or feel that they, too, would be “need to know” facts before moving to a new town? Lastly, thanks for the business plug! I do own a Graphic Design company and if anyone would like to check it out search the web or social media “Ye Olde Design Shoppe”. Cheers!

ya Bend is great- BUT in the last few years its being loved to death- too much traffic, very little bicycle infrastructure, they are building outdated (non environmental) houses and commercial buildings, the city and county government is allowing most of river canyons RIMS to be developed (no consideration of wildlife corridors and or protection of visual views from river trails). also the Deschutes National Forest is getting very sloppy/inept in managing maintenance of the roads the national forest for recreation and scenic value!

Bend is on our list for our upcoming move! Thanks for the info. I’ve looked up the average snowfall and curious if you think those are pretty accurate? @@jeffsorensen5157 As someone who lives in Salem, I personally wouldn't recommend. Everyone I know who lives here, grew up here and are desperate to move out. It's a nice size for small "city life". Cost of living is better than cities like Bend or Portland. Traffic isn't very bad compared to those places as well. Close distance to Mountains, Beach, and Portland is nice. Those are the perks. There is a big substance abuse and homeless problem that we haven't figured out. Be prepared for the occasional addict causing neighborhood issues. Be prepared for garbage, needles, and bodily fluids on the main streets. Of course, that is not everywhere and all the time. West Salem and South Salem are the better area. Both of our malls are shutting down. The Pandemic has taken a toll on a lot if small restaurants causing them to shut down. This is a big center for protests (besides portland). I personally am not bothered by it but some may be. Same with homelessness. There are plenty of kind people just having a hard time. Housing is hard time find in "nice" areas. If you have a good job and money it should be okay but if you are lower income like me, you will be in "bad" neighborhoods with higher rates of crime and violence.

Don’t know if this is helpful but I’m moving to Bend in two months and just today I sat down and called some “full” apartment complexes I had done some research into. Every person I talked to was WONDERFUL and extremely helpful! Yes things are full and apartments go fast but if you put in the effort you will find something. Two of the people I spoke to are going to text me from the personal phones the moment they see something I’m looking for. Pro tip, being nice definitely helps too lol they were way more willing to help after we talked for a bit.

You are being untruthful about Bend people not liking Californians and new residents. Bend people are very territorial and they despise Californians

Lived there about 15 years ago. Loved the area. Not very racially diverse.

Kind of wish you wouldn’t have done this video. Families like my mine who have been in Bend since the mid 90’s sort of cringe at this. Seems unnecessary. Fucking hell. You’re making it worse.

Realtors don’t care, this is how they market themselves. Why would he say anything that would jeopardize his potential income. He’s not going to be 100% truthful. He doesn’t care who moves here, so long as he makes money. Just another shortsighted selfish salesperson trying earn a buck. Can’t fault him for that, he’s just in it for himself. He knows what he’s doing and doesn’t care. Gotta get that money man. lol He would sell a house to a crack dealer in a nice neighborhood if it means a sale.

A couple things: We don't have an asian market, or a good indian restaurant or a market. Also people that live here are from CA, so they are not hating on Cali people since that's where they came from. Although they probably despise CA now... but Oregon is not much better with our socialist Governor.
