No. No Jodorowsky. Not only has he NEVER read the book, but his idea for the film is like an experimental acid trip. He also planned on killing Paul in the end, which is just plain stupid. I love Dune, but Jodorowsky's Dune should just remain an interesting piece of concept art and nothing more.
@fernandogarajalde4066

According to the recent documentary, Jodorowsky had no real sense of budgeting and would've bankrupted a studio; this despite the fact he was a visionary. I'd rather see Dune as a 13 or 26 episode series that would be on Netflix or HBO. Certainly not a miniseries or movie. And definitely NOT with the narration that was stuck in the beginning of David Lynch's film. I've read the book a couple of times and it deserves more than a casual treatment.
@yogi182
@yogi182 7 жыл бұрын
If I am not mistaken, the whole idea about "killing" Paul was that we (or the fremen) are all Muad'dib or that we are all one. That said, I do believe that Jodorowsky had great ideas about the movie, but when I finished the documentary about that I realized that the world is a better place without it, and we should keep it as "the best movie never made".

Yeah, that all needs to be redone. They came up with decent concept art for them in the video games, but it was 1990s level graphics. They can be filled in and given detail, but the video games kept the styling of the Lynch production and corrected some stuff.

Rama as far as I can tell, has never been in production. It has only been a wish of Morgan Freeman. He says he still is trying to get it made but I have my doubts that it will. Anyway, like Dune, I doubt that it could be made into a movie for the general audience. In the book, there isn't really a whole lot that goes on until the end. It's mostly a lot of exploration. It's good on book but as a film, it would need a lot of punching up to keep the general audience interested. It isn't until the 2nd book and later that things start to pick up and would be more accessible as a movie. On a related note...Do you think the space probe in Star Trek IV was inspired by Rama? :)

Jodorowsky´s Dune would have (if the leaked story boards are anything to go by) have deviated wildly from the book. I would rather have a movie that is faithful to the book, then something that isn´t. Also if you want to do Jodorowsky i would rather see his comics adapted into movies. Comics such as the Incal or The Metabarons or maybe Bouncer. all of those could make kickass movies, though to do them justice they will have to be at least pg 18.

This! I made a similar point above but I'll copy here to emphasize my agreement: Jodorowsky would never stick to the books. His vision was far FAR different from what West wrote. Lynch's version at least stuck with most of the major plot points. Jodorowsky would have butchered it and reimagined a universe vastly different. I never understood Dune nerds who complained about the Lynch version straying off the path yet stand in awe of Jodorowsky when he would have taken the series and leapt off a cliff.

I totally have to agree. I first saw the Lynch movie and loved it so much, I read the book when I was 13. Since then, I read the book every year, it is my fave. I still love the Lynch movie, which, as you put it, stuck with major plot points. Jodorowsky's version was flat out nuts! For goodness sake, he was going to make Duke Leto have no man parts and Jessica was gonna take a drop of his blood and make a baby inside her with that. That's NUTS! Not to mention all of the other bizarre changes he was going to make to the story. After I watched the documentary, I was so happy he didn't make the movie.

Having read the series over 8 times I have to say I am nervous about anyone making a movie of this again. Frank Herbert had an ecological pond on his property and much of Dune was about what happens when you do not understand an eco system and attempt to change it. Nobody understood the relationship between sand trout and worm yet the only thing people wanted to do to the planet was make it into an earth like water world killing the worms in the process. The suits by the way were designed to absorb condense and recirculate water some for cooling some for drinking. They were tight to allow a pumping action to occur, even breathing pumped water Some things will have to be assumed because you read the book as it was with Lord Of The Rings

Know, but part of the fun about dune is how this little fact about the local fauna turns centuries old military technology and tactics upside-down, and how Paul's ability to adapt to the new idiosyncrasy of war brings an empire to it's knees.

I think you might be referring to the Cryo one... Dune (Cryo - Adventure/Strategy) and Dune II (Westwood - Real Time Strategy) were both published in 1992 by Virgin. If it is Dune (Cryo) you are referring to then Yes!!! I am frantically agreeing with you :) There was something special with that game that just felt right to me, I think it had exactly the right atmosphere for Dune and was extremely memorable to me. I still remember the great music that came on when you fly in the desert - I used to let it play in the background and look at the cool CGI desert flyby just for relaxation. I was quite let down that Dune II took a whole different path with the gameplay - but even that turned out to be one of the first great RTS games ever.

My one biggest request for the future Dune adaptation is that they properly portray the Harkonnens for once, especially the Baron. In the books, the Harkonnens were legitimately frightening in a classy sort of way, yet the movie and miniseries failed to realize this. The movie made them so gross and crazy that it was impossible to take them seriously, and the miniseries almost did them right but tamed them down for television.

Josef Venport I know this. But in the books he was also very smart as well as classy in a pompous sort of way. Like I said before, the '84 movie made him so over-the-top crazy that it was impossible to take him seriously, and the miniseries tamed him down so much that he was not nearly as frightening a person as he was in the book. If we're going to have a Dune remake, the Baron Harkonnen as well as the other Harkonnens is one aspect I would really want to see done right because it would be the scariest version of them.

While in high school, I was working as a movie theater usher when Lynch's Dune came out. That week, the studio sent us boxes of info sheets that were meant to be handed out to anyone going to see Dune. They included genealogy information explaining how all the main families, including the Emperor family,, were related, a vocabulary lists, complete with phonetic pronunciations, for words and character names, and definitions for the inordinate number of made up words used throughout the movie. Apparently, they thought that the film would be inaccessible for the audience without something to refer to (I guess that they also believed that Dune was going to be a huge success because we got about 15 boxes with 1500 fliers in each; we went through about 200. As a fan, I thought it was pretty cool, but audiences were just pissed that they had to read at the movies.

JJ Abrams RUINED Star Trek. He made it just about unwatchable for me, an original 1966 run TOS fan. He doesn't understand "cerebral" Sci Fi stories at all. Imagine what a mess of a philosophically rich story he'd make out of Dune. HELL NO! Just about anyone but him, but Ridley Scott or G. Del Toro would be my two top choices. Alejandro J. would just be too weird and deviate too much from the book. I do like Giger's artwork though, it fits the Harkonens to a T. I thought he chose good actors, Orson Welles would have made a great Baron Harkonen and Salvador Dali a great Emperor, but after all this time they are dead. Also, it would be best if done as a Game of Thrones style series. The two stories are thematically related, very similar, and Game of Thrones has been a runaway hit, so Dune would do well if done like it. Both versions done so far had problems. I loved the 1984 movie version, but it tried to cram too much into 2 hours. Dune is way too complicated a story for that. Otherwise, it was great. The miniseries by Sci-Fi, was in a word, awful. It's only good thing was staying closer to the book, everything else was terrible. I've seen fan made sci-fi shows that looked better than this. We can only hope that a better version of Dune will be done the next time around, but it would have to be done like the work of art that it is, and with the way Hollywood works these days (Money is everything, to hell with art), I just don't know if it ever will be.

The SyFy channel's treatment of the first three Dune novels, in two different mini-series, was excellent, although I have to agree with Neal Babbitt's comment about casting. David Lynch's cast was excellent (although I'm still not sure about Kyle McLaughlin as Paul Atreides). Jurgen Prochnow as Duke Leto? Wow! So, now they want to make another Dune? I could see Guillermo Del Toro either directing or creating the costumes and creatures, but whoever they tap to direct, whether movies or series, really MUST read the books, in order, several times, to get all the complexity of the original author's intent. Good luck!

He's a lunatic and shouldn't be trusted around geraniums, let alone a movie camera. Actually, considering that the gene for Caucasian skin is recessive to those for darker skins, the only white people left would be ones that hadn't cross-bred with other races, meaning those who had been in isolation. The Bene Gesserit, with their breeding program, could produce all kinds of new races. I know FH had the Bene Tleilax as "gray," although in a lot of the pictures they look blue.

I loved every incarnation of the Dune movie, from the original to the fan re-cuts. The visuals were the strongest part of Lynch's movie! Speaking of which - the stillsuits were brilliant! Not sure what Kyle's issue is with them but making actors slog around in hefty bags isn't going to further the story. Just don't make the Harkonnens cartoony. "Don't make it a movie, make it a miniseries" is silly. They've done that already. Tell Peter Jackson you can't make a sprawling epic into a series of amazing movies. And this Jodorowski worship is really dangerous. His take on Dune is _weird_. The only reason people say it is amazing is because that is what has entered the media echo chamber.

Fun fact about some of the costumes in David Lynchs movie. The ones the Guild Navigators wore, were made from used body bags. They stunk like death, were heavy, hot and were made of used body bags to make the actors really uncomfortable intentionally. Pretty disturbing and gross, but I have to admit. Not one of the Navigators in any scene looked any kind of comfortable.

Ian Stradian if you read Dune and only saw the intrgues of power angle, then you need to read it again. it's primary theme is the drive for control as a means of ensuring survival, both on a small and large scale. what did you think the point of the Kwisatz Haderach was? what did you think the point of the generations of tradition surrounding the physical and mental potential of the human being was? the ecological aspect of the Fremen mythos was just another reflection of that idea.
@tinkinc85
@tinkinc85 7 жыл бұрын
Ian Stradian, I think one of the reasons that Dune is such a beloved book/series is that it brings out different themes for different people. I first read it when I was 14 and fell in love with a complicated scifi adventure whose protagonist was only a little older than me. I re-read it when I was 17 and found the political intrigue to be amazing. When I re-read it in college the themes of powerful women and the different ways the sexes solve problems was apparent and the religious themes resonated like never before (this was also just after the film came out),,When I was in my 30's I read it again and the themes of humanity's march through history was apparent as well as just the heroic and tragic story of Paul. When I was in my 40s I re-read it while my parents were terminally ill and found it to be an amazingly appropriate story about family and the tensions that children have with their parents. And yeah at some point in a re-reading I recognized the push for ecological responsibility (which I had also gotten back in the 70s). So as I read the comments I have to remember that truth in art depends on each of us' experience. FWIW I hope this becomes an HBO or Netflix series. With each season being one of the many books. Just telling the arc of the first three books could easily take 5-6 seasons.
@lettuceprime4922

Ian Stradian - I take it you skipped over Liet-Kynes' entire arc, the reason why the Missionara Projectiva was so _blindingly_ successful on Arrakis, the subtext that harvesting a natural resource for transportation and hedonistic greed also requires a wasteland for a planet. Of course Dune has an ecological message. The promise of a terraformed Arrakis is the only reason the Fremen accepted the Bene Gesserit prophecy and fight alongside Paul. It spends entire chapters inside Kynes' head talking about it. It's also got stuff about disgruntled Arab "primitives" in the dead center of the macro-economy being religiously pulled into a Jihad against the civilized world, and ancient orders and Empires shattering under new and undiscovered ramifications of the expansion of the human experience, through prescience and genetics in Dune, through instant communication and connectivity in the modern world, 50 friggin' years after its publication.
@nickagriesti6708
@nickagriesti6708 7 жыл бұрын
Lettuce Prime the Missionaria PROTECTIVA was employed on Arakkis centuries before Pardot was was even born. Why is literally every other Dune fan I encounter so confused about this point? The biggest reason Kynes was able to become a fremen instead of being killed was because he cared so much about his ecological dream that he brushed aside a combat challenge from one of their strongest fighters, who then killed himself with his own krisknife. They pretty much viewed him as a prophet after that. He had a vision that could allow them to control their destiny. It's all about control, and the futility f striving for it in the face of an indifferent and chaotic universe. Herbert even consistently talked about a higher order motivating everything. Everything else in the story revolves around this central theme. And Paul did not pull them into his Jihad. That is basically the single most consistent narrative arc of the first three books. Paul was a victim of circumstance and status. Try as hard as he could, he could not see a path that did not involve war. And he tried very, very hard once he learned how to harness his oracular power.

My "problem" with Jodorowski is he had very little respect for the source material and Herbert, and he was going to take the whole thing into whatever the heck loony direction he wanted, and lets face it: most of his films are incomprehensible. He would have departed from several original and pivotal elements of the original "Dune", turning it into another thing completely. The development of his ultimately unshootable film spawned some great art and ideas, but that was it. Most of those ideas got recycled for other projects anyway, including Jodorowski's own graphic novels and stuff.

Three things: 1.Lynch's stillsuits were awesome. The only thing missing from the books was the mask. 2.Jodorowsky? NO. Despite I know the guy is a genius (his comics are awesome and his films are interesting conceptually and visually), it is someone that doesn't know how to work in a budget. If he was hired, he would double the budget of the film and bankrupt the studios. He expends so much many in crazy things. It's not bad to have visions and interesting ideas, but you also need to see reality and Jodo isn't that kind of person (and he's also an arrogant). However, some concepts and ideas from his unmade version can be used. Jodo's version could be done, but as an alternate Dune. It also has a very very very different ending that doesn't ensure sequels. 3.I want Kyle McLachlan as the Duke or maybe Duncan Idaho.

I think we can mix Sting in his original role and use CGI to fill in where he is not available. All of the acting and audio he originally did was pretty good. Patrick Stewart can still voice the CGI and we could use most of the old footage of him. The technique would be a cleaner version of the digital remastering on Star Wars a New Hope from the deleted scenes with Han and Jabba in the starship hangar. We have the technology to make that better (like in Avatar) and to make the old actors younger where needed (Like Tron 2 and Rogue One).

Jodorowsky's Dune would have been an amazing visual feast, but after watching the Jodorowsky's Dune documentary, I fear it would have diverged too much from the text. Honestly it'd be amazing if Ridley Scott would come back to a Dune project, hopefully a 20 part HBO or Netflix Miniseries, that could chronicle just the first book. Books 2 & 3 could be seasons 2 and 3. And after that, well we don't need to see Miles Tegg, or the Honored Matres. That is way out there. But for sure the first three books should be made into a long running TV series.

i have always thought that the best way to tell the dune story is through the many incarnations of duncan, starting in heretics, then moving into the past and then the future. they need to stop just making the first book over and over, get to the god emperor, get to ix, get to murbella, get to chapterhouse, and get to the philosophy that makes franks books so important. every deep problem and all our dreams, our past and our future is written about in those books in a stunningly humanizing way, the first book is great but it serves just to get people on board and set the stage, its not until duncan becomes a major player that the true force of the ideas at play are explored.

Well the worms need water to survive, but water causes a worms flesh to break down. To keep counter act the harm of the water, the worms lace water in their bodies with a compound. The process most likely happens in the early part of digestion too keep the water of anything devoured from harming the worm. This would lead to one of the stronger sources of spice the freman "water of life" winch is collected from the water vomited/ejected from a drowned worm. Though, the "water of life" is deadly untill processed by a revered mother. The most common source of spice melange is from the dried out embryonic fluid from the metamorphosis of sand trout, larval form of the worms, to baby worms. Sand trout seek out any and all water in the environment. When enough water has been gathered many sand trout will gather creating a "pre-spice mass". Basically a cocoon for the metamorphosis with all of gathered water made safe similarly to what is consumed by an adult worm. As the worms reach maturity the pressure will spike in the mass and cause a "spice blow" killing several the infantile worms and spewing the fluid in to the air. Where it settles on the sand and drys out leaving only the spice melange. Of course an obvious source is dissecting a mature worm and harvesting specific organs.

I dont want to hear Beastie Boys in a Dune movie. I love JJ, and the Beastie Boys, but they should not mix the two together again, its been done.

Because all they're interested in these days is making money with action movies for kids, not doing stories like Dune that are true art justice. He'd make a mess out of it, just like he did with Star Trek. If he directs it, I won't go to see it.

Sorry, I disagree. JJ's good with visuals but too heavy-handed and frenetic for me. After watching his take on STAR TREK I left the theater feeling beat up and tired. DUNE needs subtlety.

I'd like to see a mix of the visuals in the movie combined with the fidelity in the Sci Fi channel Mini series. Dune realized as a full 10 or 12 episode run would be perfect. Justice MUST be done for the Baron Harkonnen!

Frank Herbert may have been an ecologist sort of guy, but to suggest that 50 years ago in Dune he was warning about global warming is beyond ludicrous. Way back then, the OMG We're All Gonna Die Big Crisis was the coming Ice Age.

Russ Emerson That's a myth, scientists have known about the ill effects of co2 emissions since the late 1800's. The coming ice age thing was pop 1950's hysteria, no professionals believed it and there were no papers to provide evidence.

A TV series would raise the possibility of doing not only the first book or first trilogy, which have been covered before but to include God Emperor, Heretics and Chapter House Dune. Who wouldn't want to see Leto the God Worm crushing unbelievers or Miles Teg taking out a whole building of Honored Matres in bullet time... and the Duncan and Murbella scene which would R-rate any movie but probably be fine on HBO these days.

Surely the biggest thing by far to update from the movie is how Paul's Bene Gesserit powers are treated - In the books, the weirding way is more like a super power that gives you insane fighting skills - not this voice powered weapon, the weirding module, which in the movie just feels like a totally unconnected Ex Machina and is counter to the whole tone of the story. Can't believe you guys didn't mention this!

@Bonez0r

So what if it's not similar to the book? It would have been awesome anyway. But if it was going to happen it would have been released in the 80s. There's zero chance now. And it's not one or the other, why do people think that? There's room for both.

Avoid white-washing no matter what. While the principal heroes and villains are probably white or close to it, many supporting characters (the "Zensunni" Fremen) are probably not. No Prince of Egypt or Gods of Egypt or Last Airbender BS. Dune has to be strange and trippy and mind-expanding. I'm afraid they'll just give it the big budget action movie treatment, which fails most of the time (John Carter of Mars, for example), but will fail hard and feel extra fake and shallow with Dune. Generic trumpeting opera music as the camera pans over a CGI location. Plastic non-sense fights like Jupiter Ascending. Peter Jackson-ing in shit that never happened. No real character development. Squeezing humor (like pratfalls or sarcastic glances) into something that was meant to be deep and complex and ethereal with very little humor (any worthy humor must be as dry as Arrakis). I'm thinking the tone of the movie/show should be somewhere in the realm of 2001: A Space Odyssey, There Will Be Blood, and Zardoz. Also, Baron Harkonnen must be beyond morbidly obese, not just overweight with antigravity suspenders, and must have a DEEP voice. Those are his two defining physical characteristics and they must be right.
@blokeyman
@blokeyman 7 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. The Atreides were always described as generally Caucasian, but the Fremen need to be dark skinned, and you could go nuts with the Harkonnen's, the navigators, the Bene Gesserit etc.

My wish is that whoever produces a new DUNE take the time to really add emotional nuance to the characters. One thing I HATE are cookie-cutter characters that fall into nothing more than stereotypes. The DUNE-iverse characters really contrast sharply between good, abject, and evil but I'd love to see the shades of gray that color their motives. One great example of what I mean (though not part of the DUNE saga) is Alan Moore's KILLING JOKE, where he shows the Joker as more than a psychopath; he shows the events that shaped the Joker into a criminal mastermind and that there are vestiges of his old self still buried deep within his twisted psyche. I hope someone makes the people of DUNE come to life as well. AND NO BARON "CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS" HARKONNEN THIS TIME!!!
