I picked up an n55 m235i and the previous owner put a v**f race exhaust on with a dinan performance midpipe. The system is lightweight and functional, but i knew that it wasn't meant for me long term and have actively begun searching on how or what I am going to fix/revise this. The tone and drone could have vastly been improved with tuned resonator, taking away that annoyance between 2700 and 3300 rpm. At some point in life, Id love to meet both you and alex from lsc, but more importantly, since im in the midwest as well, sometime have your team guide or build a way better "performance daily driver" exhaust. I love nice exhaust, but theres a difference between purpose volume and just loud and crass. Keep up the good work, hopefully a future client someday.

Awesome video, OJ! The exhaust topic is a tricky subject, and oftentimes was regarded as sorcery and black magic in realms of old....😂 Your exhaust "code" is very, pardon the pun, sound. [Dad jokes anyone?] There are so many rabbit holes on the subject that you can dive into, and it would be neat if you untangled some of those in future videos. I loved your magephone segment a few weeks ago! I am currently building a radical custom exhaust from alpina type headers back on a BMW e53 X5 I6 (rare manual transmission) with some really cool hat tricks and some modular sections for experimental sound tuning. Rabbit holes. Everywhere. 😂 Love the channel, man!

New to your channel and very happy to find experts in the field. I will be coming to you guys for my next build. Thankfully not too far away in Ohio LOL. What has been your experience with Venturi pipes? Many years ago, I had a 2007 Mitsubishi eclipse GT with a 3.8 l V6. I built a custom exhaust four times to get it right. Unfortunately it was the year before they switched to a dual exhaust design so an x-pipe wasn't in the cards. In the final build, it was the Venturi pipe that got me over the 300 WHP mark. I was pretty happy getting from 263 BHP to 300 WHP and still being NA. I am glad I stopped there because was starting to follow this wild Russian guy who frankensteined the Evo AWD system into his 4th Gen eclipse and went forced induction. My fabrication skills aren't that good lmao. Neither was the $10K price tab to pull that off.

The quality of content and knowledge on this channel is unmatched. Also, IMO critical when working with metals that expand due to heat, especially stainless, invest in ADJUSTABLE MEASURABLE torque wrenches & use the proper thread liquid (if/when needed, such as anti-seize or threadLocker) Torque bolts AT spec (not over, not under), in a cross-bolt pattern. Great stuff 👍

I have been trying to decide what muffler(s) to use on my car. So I have been researching especially since I am on a tight budget. One thing most people don’t consider is as the exhaust gases travel through the system it cools and shrinks. I used to wonder why the interior volume of the exhaust pipes were smaller after the headers. But came to that conclusion. Thanks for your information. Watched the megaphone video also.

Solid work as is the standard for FMU. Only disagreement is the X-pipe recommendation. For any large displacement V-8, true dual, equal length exhaust is the best sound. The rough, guttural roar is the brutal cacophony that makes other engines hide.

Personally I can't think of what you would gain. The exhaust temps are well within the working parameters of stainless so inconels superior temperature handling is moot. Its more expensive, and more difficult to work with but it does resist cracking better. I've welded piles of it for boiler systems in oil and gas. I mean, could you? Sure. should you, I can't think why other than because I wanted to, which is a valid reason.

I just finished my first full stainless with the right welding wire and gas this time. Ugly but functional welds. I had to use pie cuts to find different angles in 3 spot. I found myself using tape to hold them in place then peeled some back to tack. I noticed any angle cut pieces elongates the hole size and doesnt match exactly. Had to cut apart one section after it moved an inch off. Found welding my way back was better. Learnd cheap v bands are trash. Learnd v bands warp and need to be filed flatt. Came out okay. Made my own x pipe out of 45° to keep a low angle and didnt over cut the middle to cause a pinch point.

My question has always been where to place the mufflers and megaphones throughout the system. How does the position of these change the tone of the exhaust? Is it better to have megaphones at the beginning of the system, in the middle or at the end? How does the length of the megaphones affect the performance and sound? Is it better to have mufflers at the end of the exhaust system or in the middle? It would be great to know that information with the help of your experience. Great video!

Hype. Used them many times and while they do more than many after market options… it’s not better than a high quality straight through design. The Audi 3.0T supercharged engine is known in the Audi community to be difficult to make sound good once you throw test pipes in the mix. I’m curious as to what you’d do to get it to sound awesome not only at WOT but also at low throttle city driving with a full custom setup from the header back. All my 3.0t friends and customers who run test pipes either have something custom to combat the ugly rasp, volume and/or pitch as there really isn’t a system out there on the market people are 100% happy with….

So what’s the opinion on ovular cross-sections for pipes? I’ve always figured the flow is roughly the same as long as the internal volume is the same as a circular pipe. The only variation I can think of is bending along the long axis of the oval or the short axis leading to different amounts of air friction. Would love to hear more about this since I’m trying to custom fab a flatter exhaust header by using ovals instead of circles!

Hey OJ, Im curious; is there a rule of thumb that the exhaust should step up in diameter or step down in diameter as you progress from the collector to tailpipe? I'd always grown up hearing the old school train of thought that as the exhaust gasses cool they take up less space so you step down the pipe in size to speed up velocity which kind of made sense at the time but i have recently heard people reccomend stepping up in diameter for optimum performance.

OJ is there a good way or best way to do a straight pipe? Not just the content from this video but things that may need to be considered to combat not having a muffler/resonator

I have a 2014 Mustang GT with offroad X pipe(cat delete) resonator delete and corsa sports. I hate how blatty it is on normal driving. But love the way it sounds at wide open throttle. How do i give it a smoother sound for normal driving so its not so blatty?

Nice! I have an 07 Ridgeline and the muffler is getting a rust spot, what muffler would make the V6 sound good without sounding like a fart can?
