Tidus stands as one of the most popular video game characters to have ever been created, but despite that, he's also quite a divisive character.
Throughout this video, we're going to delve a bit deeper into some of the stories behind the creation on Tidus, why his name is said the way it is (and why it probably shouldn't have been) and some unique gameplay twists and allusions!

Tidus is actually a really complex character. He's got that external manic optimism while still carrying the weight of insecurity from his childhood, and despite his cheerful outlook has one of the most tragic endings for any FF protagonist.

He never had the chance to properly process how he blamed his father for everything. He isnt bipolar, he just hides this side. His real self is shown to yuna in the awkward scene. FYI -> Yuna's name is Okinawan for a type of hibiscus that grows near the shore on southern Japanese islands - Hibiscus tiliaceus. That same flower is featured on her obi/belt and her necklace in FFX. This species of hibiscus tends to bloom in the evening, just as the sun sets. Phonetically in Japanese Yuuna can mean "evening bloom/blossom", but no kanji writing has ever been officially released. In connection with Teéda/Tida (Sun) tho, the meaning of Yuuna as a flower which unfolds it's true potential and beauty during the setting sun perfectly reflects the their story.

Tidus was a very complex and highly well written character. Even his meme'd forced and fake laugh served a purpose. He is how you can do a hero with a tragic past and not be weighed down by it too much.

Love my boi Tidus Also, probably another fact about him that some people don’t know: specifically for those who consider the laughing scene as bad acting….it’s meant to be fake laughter lol
@imseeno

I think many people heard that fact but just don't want to accept or believe it. And the way I saw it when I first played it as a 10 or 11 year old back at release, that seemed like a normal fake laugh. If someone is forcing me to laugh and I'm really not in the mood, that is how I would sound like.

I feel like he’s one of those characters where people mistake intentional character flaws for bad characterization. Tidus is not always likeable, which is true of several Final Fantasy protagonists. But with, say, Cloud or Squall they’re blatant assholes in their worst moments, while Tidus is more just annoying (like, in universe, to the other characters) in his worst moments. In that regard Tidus has more in common with Vaan or Hope, or even Zidane. It’s almost like his flaws are more narratively passive than Cloud’s or Squall’s flaws, making him less likeable as a character in those flaws. On a more surface level, I think the sometimes stilted vocal performance can make it hard for people to connect with him. Of course there’s the often misinterpreted laugh scene, but even beyond that his performance wavers between brilliant and obvious product of its time.
@tricd0444
@tricd0444 2 жыл бұрын
@@The_Jantof I could see someone disliking him on a surface level because of the slightly awkward voice acting, especially at the beginning of the game, but the more you really dive into the story and analyze it, the less all the complaints seem valid. I think many of his 'flaws' come from his narrative perspective -- he just got dragged out of his life in Zanarkand, playing blitzball and being famous and resenting living in the shadow of his more famous father, then got ripped out of that world, allegedly by his father, and placed in a new world where he knows absolutely nothing, and still ends up living in the shadow of his father. If you don't know all the details of the overall story, he very quickly becomes an easily dislikable character. He's dumb, he asks questions that everyone thinks is stupid, and the overall slightly quirky voice acting can lead someone to brush all those intricate details aside to focus on that dumb laugh scene. Which is also one of the biggest pieces of character building you get for Tidus and Yuna, as long as you understand Yuna's desire for a jovial appearance, and Tidus' despondency towards his current predicament.
@The_Jantof
@The_Jantof 2 жыл бұрын

@am9189
@am9189 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's better that way. It lets us pronounce it how we want. I prefer to address him as Tidus. It rolls off the tongue better and it synergizes with the word "tide" since that how came to Spira, via water. Plus his entire affinity is water. In a way, that's pretty clever. We can call his Tidus: since he came in with the tide or We can call him Tedus: Since his name also means Sun in Japanese. And since he's canonically in a relationship with Yuna (which is type of water orchid flower) it makes perfect since. Flowers need both water AND sunlight to grow,

It worked fine for most of the game, but there were a few times where calling him "Son of Jecht" felt a bit forced (mostly with Seymour on Gagazet). I feel like when Seymour comes back it would've been less awkward to just say something like "You again!". The other part that made it a bit weird is one of the non-voiced characters in the cafe in Luca calls him Tidus if you talk to him - literally the only one to address him by name.

On 7, the affection meter affects more scenes and only some of them are female-specific. In Guadosalam when Yuna is in the mansion after the scene with Seymour and before leaving for the Thunder Plains, Tidus will have cutscene conversations with either Rikku or Lulu about it. Almost no one sees the Rikku one as you've only just picked her up at the Moonflow and have barely had an opportunity to build up the affection. At Lake Macalania after defeating the Crawler boss, either Lulu, Rikku, Auron or Kimahri can join Tidus on the snowmobile ride for a cutscene depending on affection. At the Fahrenheit after defeating both of Sin's arms and jumping off onto Sin, any of the characters will jump first depending on the affection level, after which Tidus says the "star players first!" line you mentioned. The last cutscene occurs right before going into the final battle with Sin (the fight where he draws you in for the ultimate game over attack). After Brother's English lines, the character with the highest affection will also say something. I remember Lulu saying something awkward like "Just you and me!" and Tidus scratching his head as the entire party goes to fight Sin. For more in-depth info on all the affection mechanics, you can see what influences it here: finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Affection_mechanics_(Final_Fantasy_X)

Another pronunciation one I like to bring up... Chocobo's original pronunciation sounds like Chicago. It's a Sioux word for a stench, like how you'd find them in forest spots that "reek of Chocobo". That's how Chicago got its name, too. It was originally a settlement built around coal and oil refineries and those places emit a bad odor. Personally, I always pronounced it close to the way they decided to use starting on FFX, and I'm glad they went with that.

My thing with the name, “Teedus” is fine but I guess I just like Tide-us more thematically. The game has so many references to water, water is central to a lot of elements of the game visually and in the story, so having his name also be water related, “tide”, fit for me. This was literally the interpretation of my developing teenage brain that had been taught to look for and identify themes and motifs by Square games up until that point so it wasn’t unreasonable.

I would hazard to guess changing Tida to Tidus might've been done because the associated gender connotation of "us" is more masculine to Westerners from the Latin tradition than a name concluding with "a". I feel like when a Japanese company says "I asked my American friend..." that should send up red flags, especially when it didn't make it into the original release they were working on at the time. "Tie-dus" is also the standard English pronunciation of the name of the Roman emperor who is called "Teetus" everywhere else. The Japanese pronunciation argument is more compelling (and one I personally subscribe to), but (i) it's not technically the indigenous Okinawan pronunciation but a Tokyo representation thereof and (ii) it doesn't really make sense to talk about Japanese vowel pronunciation when on is pronouncing "Aoki" (a real person's name) as "Eaki". (This is not a nitpick of the narrator's pronunciation so much as to make a point about how English pronunciation of foreign names works. If Tidus were real, he'd probably be about as likely to tell anglophones that their pronunciation of his name was "fine" as Eaki or Namura 😉)

Don't believe common misconceptions, althought the lead translator of the French translation for FFIX later found a good excuse, its name being changed to Djidane is likely unrelated to our famous footballer. Reality is, we're just really, really, really bad at translating, and one thing we love to do is change the name to how it sounds phonetically in the original language, which is why he also changed Dagger to Dagga, as it is how it sounds in Japanese, as well as Vivi changed to Bibi. This is obviously not exclusive to FFIX and is very common, for example Midna from Zelda TP was changed to Midona.

I've always pronounced the name "Tee-duss" because a pre-release article in EGM magazine way back. before FFX released made a point of including the pronunciation as part of the article. As that was the first time I (and many people) encountered the name and it was before the property was actually released, I've taken it as gospel ever since. That being said, pronunciation of a fictional name is quite a silly to argue about at all and I wouldn't flinch if he were called "Tie-duss" or even "Henry"; it's just not that important.

NGL, I've always preferred names not to be localised, because a character's name is often a representation of who they are. As someone from a country where "I" is also pronounced as "ee", I've always pronounced it as "Teedus" as well. Often times I wish companies would sell more translations without western localisation, so I could experience the original references and humour, instead of changes made for Western (but let's be honest, it's American) sensibilities.

My first Final Fantasy game after being exposed to Final Fantasy characters in Kingdom Hearts. I also said "Tee-dus" because of Wakka too. As a kid I said to myself "Why aren't they calling him by his name????"

I usually prefer having real voice actors in place of celebs on these projects, but sometimes someone I know is nice. Like I was a fan of GLOW on Netflix and having Britt Baron do Tifa's voice on the remake was cool.

🤣 Teeee- dus. The arguments some of us players got into over the name. Good times. I also thought he was a bottle blond. His roots are so dark.

Just a note, There are 4 letters in the necklace not 2, T J S and Y. Considering how much importance Nomura put on symbolism in the character designs in this game, and also considering that the four characters whose name begin with those letters are quite important to the games plot/story, im gonna say that its not a conicidence.

To this day, I guess FF X is the most mature FF you can come up with I'd say. I really don't understand why ppl dislike this episode... But I keep looking for an answer to that XD.

Am I the only one who thinks that at some point Tidus should have been confused for an al bhed? He's got the blonde hair, doesn't follow Yevon, and is wearing clothes unlike any of the other Spira denizens

Calling a different way to pronounce Tidus' name than some might prefer 'triggering' isn't a good idea. That way of using the word is taken from mental health terminology, where it's used to refer to when a person who's had an extremely negative, even traumatizing, experience is inadvertently made to recall it by some external occurrence. As such, using the word for what is ultimately just annoyance or frustration is a fairly drastic misuse.

I think the interesting one is the Tidus Overdrive where one of the lady characters helps give tidus the brizball to him for his move. I think when we was playing we wouldn’t of noticed the fact that it was to depend on if you have the three characters alive in order to see it.
