Lately, I’ve been using my Matte box more for photography than video, the reason is it helps resist whether such as rain or snow getting on the interior of the lens a lot better. It also has the interchangeable lens setup with the same ND and filters.

Andy, the thing I appreciate so much about your channel is that you make photography genuinely fun! It's the combination of the interesting topics you talk about, the way you explain things, and your humility and openness that make your videos an extreme pleasure to watch and more importantly learn from. For some reason, watching other channels causes me to lose motivation to shoot photos but you make me want to grab my camera and go out. Truly inspirational and informative!

As always great video Andy! I can't agree more with your suggestions, and my favorite is probably the first one --> Minimalism. The snowy landscapes sometimes are quite tricky, but in the meantime the snow simplify the geometries with limitless opportunities for crazy and unusual compositions. Most of the times, especially with wide angle lenses, to achieve a strong composition I love to stay focused on what to keep out of the shot rather than fill the frame with too much elements. Winter is definitely the best season for landscape photographers to challenge ourselves on new minimalistic ethereal compositions, and of course stay rock with the freezing cold in the field :) Cheers man!

One thing I often do is to carry several of the chemical hand warmers. They are cheap, last for several hours and slip one in the palm of each glove and it makes a world of difference.

These are all great tips. I would add one regarding batteries, and one about keeping you hands warm: 1. Batteries may appear to be dead because of the cold, but if you keep them in rotation, you will be able to get more juice out of them once they have warmed up. So, don't throw a "dead" battery in the bag thinking it's done for the day. Warm it up so that you can use it later if needed. 2. While layering gloves is certainly a very good idea, if you find yourself shooting a lot in the winter, you may as well factor that in when you choose a camera. Certain cameras can be easily handled with big gloves, others not so much. Using a camera that you can easily control whit big gloves will allow you to just keep them on at all times.

I live in Arctic Sweden and I often shoot landscapes at temperatures below -20C. I have some more tips to add if the temperature is really cold. 1) You often stand still when operating the camera, or wait for something to happen in the landscape. Walk around every now and then. Do not stand stationary for longer periods of time. I use quite heavy boots with a thermal inner boot that I can use comfortably when it is down to -40C, but even with wearing shoes of that sort you still have to move around to avoid getting cold. 2) If you know before hand what camera setting you need set the camera up in advance before you head out to minimize exposing skin. I use a thin glows as an inner layer and a really heavy duty down mitten ( North Face Himalaya mittens ) as an outher layer. Inside the down mitten I use a RC-controler to operate the camera while I go back and forth nearby. That is my best tips of how to cope with shooting in really serious conditions.

I would add crampons to the list. Trekking in the snow often means trekking on ice. I lost my footing once and went sliding down a rock face for about 20 feet or so. Definitely one of the scarier moments of my life but one that could have been avoided if I wore the proper footwear
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds pretty scary, and there are times when crampons are essential. I thought about putting stuff like that in the video, along with things like gaiters and cleats (which often as useful as crampons), but I focused on things that were necessary pretty much universally in winter photography and crampons aren't always essential.

Great clip! Thanks for putting this together. One question though... How do you handle white balance in changing lighting conditions? I find it quite hard to get the snow to be nice and white. Do you take "snow-only pictures" immediately after a particular shot (as reference for wb)? Do you correct everything in post? What's your approach? Any recommendations? I can't really find good information about this anywhere... Thanks

Hi Andy - great content as always👍👍👍. I shoot with Fuji also. I notice that you use the 55-200 as your telephoto lens. Do you use this for your winter adventures too? I'm heading out to Hokkaido this January and wondering if I need to borrow the 50-140 because the 55-200 is not weather resistant. My travel set up right now, 16mm, 35mm f2 and 55-200. In your experience does keeping the camera and lenses inside a camera bag prevent the condensation that would otherwise happen when taking the gear from the outside, which is very cold, to the inside, of a hut for example, which is very warm?

You have a touchscreen. Why not a stylus that works with your phone?
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
Fair point. For me it's just another thing to carry/drop/lose which I'd prefer not to have, and a large amount of time when I'm using the phone while out shooting is in combination with the drone controller, and it's not practical to use a stylus on the phone while holding that. Also, for me it just makes sense to have a solution that gives me the flexibility to operate camera dials and drone controls without having to take gloves off.

Hello Andy, I understand about ETTR just a little question when shooting manual shoot you always attempt to place the needle in the middle of your eyepiece, or not, then scroll the dial on top of the camera when you wish to increase the exposure. Is that correct? Or am wrong I thank for your time on this matter...
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Allen. When shooting manual then to expose to the right I would generally do it with the shutter, rather than the aperture which I prefer to keep at the optimum aperture for sharpness. So, depending on how exposure is displayed on your camera I would open up the shutter until the exposure indicator is reading +1. Generally most cameras change shutter speeds in increments of 1/3 of a stop, so it's basically 3 clicks of the shutter dial.
@curtis.strange
@curtis.strange 5 жыл бұрын
ETTR should not be explained as "overexposing" - it means to expose for the highlights, so that they are captured and not clipped.
