The most common reason for aquarium algae is excess amounts of lighting. It can also be caused by having too much nutrients in the water. You should first manually clean and remove the aquarium algae, and try to figure out what the cause of it was a lot of fish keepers try to fix the aquarium algae issue by getting a catfish. Most of the time this is just going to add more problems to the equation in your fish tank.
Products:
➡ Live Plants - amzn.to/3VwMqFZ
➡ Popular Aquariums - amzn.to/3VNuPLu
➡ Rock & Wood - amzn.to/4emMp0d
➡ Best Lighting - amzn.to/3KNx8Yz
The common catfish that is known as an algae eater is the Pleco. Adding a Pleco catfish to your fish tank could result in the algae being decreased, but more poop being added to your fish tank. Most people are unaware of how much these catfish poop and it can completely take over your fish tank within a couple days.

I trust a man with a lot of fish tanks in his house. Thank you for this! I am a first time fish keeper (kinda by accident), and I have been trying to figure out why my tank grows so much algae. I am going to raise up my lighting as best I can. It comforts me what you said about algae meaning a tank is doing pretty okay. Here I have been thinking I'm just terrible at keeping fish. All my fish, shrimp, and snails are still alive, so that must mean I'm doing something right. have a pleco but not really for its cleaning capabilities. It hangs out with the corydorya, which has possibly confused it for one of its own kind. They play with each other every day.

Kind of misleading title, becase these tips are not for removing algae. Those tips won't do anything for someone that already have a diatom bloom or BBA spread all over their anubias.

@@PalmerAquatics I have a 50 watt outside led light on my 75 gal that's like a ft + from the tank I turn on for like 4-6 hrs. & a submersible led light bar that's just above the water I use every other day or a few hrs. after I turn the other 1 off for a few hrs. I also have glass lids on it cause the dust in here is CRAZY. I have some sort of a lot of plant's but not as a flooded tank full, but I'm working on that too But even with the lights off for most the day I get a shimmer of algae & don't have a big fish load, so what does that tell you ?

Um… there’s always an option to add a Timer (and can change the luminosity too) as en extension on those lights. There pretty cheap.

Wonderful information and you speak the truth! I use LED bar lights that are specialized for use in a hydroponics system (I figure if its good enough the plants I eat, its good enough for my fish and their plants). Well, I put the light up quickly without much care for how it is mounted for the time being as I am planning out my new rack arrangement. One side of the light is about 3" above the tank and the other side is closer to 6" above. The lower side has a film of algea on the side of the tank and the higher side is perfectly clear. A great accidental experiment.

This video was very informative, I have an aquarium that seems to be going crazy with algae lately and I wasn't sure what was going on. But after recently moving to a new house my aquarium has been getting tons more attention recently being in our main living room, and I think the light has been on for much longer intervals then when it was in our old house. So I will be limiting the lighting more in hopes things clear up more. 😎

interesting take on the cheaper lights that cause Algae.. true they do not have the complete usable light spectrum and the plants end up not absorbing the nutrients. hence the algae.

Thank you! I wondered if that would work. I have a full spectrum light that is never at 100, do you recommend a max %, or a different program other than the "dusk to dawn"? I'm hesitant to unlid due to a household combination of "I have cats" & "the fish are cichlids that I don't want jumping out".

I think the best thing is just to accept algae. Like you said it's not a bad thing. I hate it but it is what it is. My other plants are prospering so I can't really do much other then clean my front and side glass. I just leave it on the back panel.

How does moving light further higher away from water level reduce algae? It only throws less PAR into the tank. Or we can just adjust the LED intensity to lower. You did not explain.

Why don't more people know about Aqueon algae cleaner? I was fighting a green tank for months. Until I bought this product. Now my tank is beautiful. Lighting does cause it but this product works. My fish and snails and shrimp are fine. And it's under 10. It works. Two drops depending on how large your tank is. This is so much cheaper than other methods.

I have a lone betta in an imagitarium with a glass lid & LED light. I don’t think the plants are getting enough light as some of the plants were leggy and dropping leaves. When I pulled yhose plants out they felt slimy so I threw them away. I scraped the sides & cleaned algae from the pump, changed the filter and did a 50% water chsnge. All was good. Some algae but not an overwhelming amount. All was good until I added a piece of wood bought from a local pet store. I soaked it to remove excess tannin before adding it. A couple days after putting it in the tank the wood was covered with slimy green stuff and what looked like shiny little bubbles. The pump is covered with hairy little algae strings as are the sides. There are sime nitrates showing in the water test strip but the color is really light. Any idea what the slimy stuff on the wood is? It looks like the sand in the tank bottom is covered with greenstuff as well. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

My 29g has a lid ( I have African Butterfly that will jump & cats that will have expensive snacks ) Think I will try a more expensive light to put under the hood & see how that works... no lid is not an option for me , so raising the light would require me trying to come up with a glass lid my cats couldn't move AT ALL :/

Thank you. I totally agree with the statement (ish) that LED lights cause more algae. When I had my old tank with the hood that had a flourscent tube light, I did not have nearly as much algae growth as I do now with my aquasky programmable led light. I don't know how I am going to raise it higher for now, but in the meantime are your LED lights adjustable?,and if they are, what percentage of each light spectrum do you reccomend to reduce the algae growth? Thank you again.

Hey Chris. I have all beamswork DA led lights on all 8 tanks in my basement with shubunkin calico fantail. I also have the aqueon glass tops. I have brown algae. Its very unsightly. I do have anacharis live plants in the tanks. Some tanks have more plants than others. I run hob and sponge filters. The shubunkin have cooler water than the calico fantail. That may not let plants grow. I have the lights on timers 10 hours a day...your thoughts?
