What I'm wondering is why all the 60 year old blues players are on a video for ERGs. Every comment is either these guitars are for 15 year olds who listen to too much metal or my piano has more strings or why not use a bass. It's so easy to criticize music that you don't understand. Why not respect the people who come here because they're actually interested in the guitars instead of telling them their music is shit?

Just to point it out to people, the deeper strings are NOT popular for melodic playing, they are popular for their percussive string attack, and are used in genres where the distortion settings are so that the deeper strings are huge percussive blasts of overtones. Harmony does not really register too well in those ranges and it's not supposed to either. The comments are criticizing it on the premise of being a guitar, but it's really made its name for being a drum with melodic elements.

In my opinion, when you show these guitars that are primarily used for hardcore metal, it would be better to use an amp that compliments that style. Some combo marshall isn't going to inspire people about the guitar at all. It sounds terrible with the lower stings. If you're in a guitar store, isn't there better amps to use it on?

yeah I personally dont go lower than B on any guitar, BUT to be honest Animals as leaders tune their 8 string to E, and Glass Cloud mostly plays in F, D and even a low A of the guitarist 9 string and it doesnt seem to muddy. I think the style of playing is important. If you tune that low you cant use chords anymore with the low string, its more percussive bass style with the low strings

To a lot of people, myself included, the C just sounds good. I don't mind a 7 string tuned to A if it's set up right. 8 and up I'm kinda leaning to the just get a freakin bassists already point lol. Really though I can't sing with a standard tuned guitar it's just too high. When I'm in drop C I still stress my voice at times but the lower notes are just easier to hit with a good pitch and not sounding airy. And again C just sounds better than D.
@GamerTheEpic

i want to see a technical death metal band playing their stuff on a 6 string in standard or drop D... I don't know a single heavy metal band that is using a 7 string and drop tunings, but for sure there are metal genres where you need drop tunings. I don't see why you think it's a shame. Drop Tunings are the reason why there are a lot of different metal genres nowadays. Nobody told you to listen to them, but don't try to make them bad because you don't like this kind of music.

I don't think the JVM was a good choice for an amp on this one. They have their strengths, but they just can't handle down-tuning very well. This would've been fairer through a Mesa Rectifier, a Peavey 6505, or one of the new Randalls, just to name a few.

We have bassists for a reason. Yes that's true! But that's only because the Luthiers shorted us on the string count to our guitars. This isn't such a bad thing if we're playing in a band. But what if you're soloing all by your lonesome self? Not such a good thing! This is why guitarists take an interest in additional strings.

I use my 8 string as a way to thicken up barre chords. EBEADGBe is the way to go. It's a good way to extend the range of the guitars in your band without it being over the top. The B allows you to hit the lower range of notes without issue and the low E is used to thicken up chords. Bass player is still required.

7- string was a pleasant suprise to me. I love it! In fact, it only adds 5 more semi/half tones (in standard tuning), which is nothing special. :) the cooler thing is that you have notes from the lower frets from the 6th string just under (on the 7th string) its higher frets. Very cool for lead guitar and also for rhythm (albeit, for rhythm, it requires a longer reprogramming, IMO) 8 and 9- string guitars just don't add nothing I want for my original music so I can't comment about them. I love how Tosin Abasi uses his 8 string guitar though!

This is Rob Chapman's channel, so a majority of people here are probably into Blues and Rock, and the sound of those kinds of guitars would just sound like nonsense to them. and just for the record, 'perfect tone' is subjective. I have nothing against extra strings. If people want more strings, why shouldn't they use them? I don't think the music you make has anything to do with how many strings your guitar has. While I don't really like the genres where these guitars are being used, I don't really have anything against them. What does the amount of strings have to do with the quality of the music? But if the selling point of your band is the amount of strings you are using, that's just stupid. But when you are listening to an album, you don't hear how many strings the guitarist is using. And even if you do, again what does that have to do with the quality of the music? If you don't like low sounds, that's OK. But these guitaris can be used for more than just low playing. You can play new kind of chord voicings with them. They have a great range. Just experiment. And how does it hurt anybody if they are selling 9 string guitars? It takes nothing away from the 6 string guitars.
@Schmorgasblab
@Schmorgasblab 9 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The Chord voicings are a great benefit to more strings. Personally I see huge potential for jazz and blues. Look at guitar players like Lenny Breau or George Van Epps, two absolute behemoth guitar players ... both on 7 strings most of the time.
@combinbain
@combinbain 9 жыл бұрын
i totally agree, but the fact is that an 8, or worse a 9, string guitar covers most of the spectrum frequencies. Imagine what a mess would be recording a song or just a concert: the guitar would blow away the bass and partially the drums, plus the sound is awful when playing the lower strings. As an example listen to some songs of meshuggah: apart from liking or not the genre, the bass is useless and from the drums you can hear just the snare, kick and cymbals. everything else is covered by guitars (8 strings). said from a guitarist, having an 8 or 9 strings guitar is just pure ego.
@MaggaraMarine
@MaggaraMarine 9 жыл бұрын
combinbain Well, that's just one way of using it. A 9 string guitar doesn't replace a bass. It's not all about the range, it's about the sound. You could also argue that a keyboard player could also replace the bass. But most bands with keyboardists also have bassists and guitarists - so they are playing the same frequencies but the sound is different and that makes it work. It's a new instrument and needs to be experimented with. Djent is just one style that you can play on it (and you don't even need 9 strings for that - you can always drop tune your 6 string if you need low notes). Check out Rob Scallon. He has done some more original sounding stuff on 8 and 9 string guitars. Extended range guitars would also work well as solo instruments, just like piano. It's basically a piano that is played like a guitar (if we look at the range). People need to experiment and not just follow the trends. I'm sure you could be really innovative with the 9 string guitar.

I got 8 strings guitars for years now it does feel like a new type of instrument. I then got that exact 9 strings over a year ago and felt the same again. I then got a 10 strings fanfreted 3 months ago which feel a bit more like a big 9 than a new instrument type. I get it that most players think that 6 strings is enough, but in my case, I barely stop playing guitars with less than 9 strings but I certainly play different things since then. I still go back to 8 when I want to play more traditional stuff. I sold pretty much all my 6. So extended range is different, unnecessary, but really inspiring in a totally different way. And if you are playing solo guitar (or just playing by yourself) it is just great since you can now get a much richer sound. For the records, I play more jazzy clean tone stuff with lots of tapping.

For the 8 at least I'd like to blame the horrible sound on a combination of those EMGs (I've never heard of a person who's actually liked an EMG 808 haha) and that they're using a Marshall - nothing wrong with the marshall, it's just that their voice doesn't work very well for the tunings that those guitars go that low. For high gain sounds I find that amps that are naturally tight work best - and they are just really cool on on most any clean amp :)

You can't really cut the guitar because Rob himself admitted that he basically has no idea how to play it (not in those exact words, of course). The best way to describe that thing really is just a completely different instrument. Plus, because the damn thing hits so low, you really need some extremely high quality, and stupid expensive gear to make it sound good. I have to say though, I love Schecter and adore my EMG-loaded Omen 7, but a 9 string? Its impressive, its cool to look at, and I'm sure it'd be, let's just say "interesting" to play, but I think an 8 string would be the highest I'd go.

That 9 string just sounded like an out of tune mess. I know it's not chappers playing, so is there really a point to it?

7's I can understand but 8's an 9's. What the hell?? To me, there is zero appeal of having muddy/fart sounding strings.

It sounds better with an amp that has a tight sound. This amp was really muddy because it's overdrive gain was maybe on 4 or 5. Listen to bands like Meshuggah and see how tight an 8 string can sound.

Yea 8s dont really have a muddy sound. 9s sort of do, but they arent as popular therefore the really good companies arent actually focusing on them so eh. But yea, 8s sound great Especially with .9 gauge strings. A lot clearer.

8s sound great clean. I've never heard an 8 string that I actually like distorted, but the clean stuff Animals as Leaders dose with 8 strings is fucking awesome.

A 9-string really should have fanned frets IMO. 8-strings are already barely tolerable without a fan--27 is just barely long enough for the low F#, but way too long for the high E. Also, a tighter amp and a tube screamer (instead of a noise gate) would've helped this demo.

You don't have to have a muddy/fart sound with theese, it's just there aren't as many appropriate amps for those - also just very few players get the right/good tone

Being a fan of Slipknot and Lamb of God's newer stuff, I'm a fan of a heavy sort of chugging sound. I don't mind 7 strings too much, but more than 7 is just stupid. Honestly, just get a baritone 6 string and put some heavy strings on it.

+John Moore no play a 7. You lose your soloing ability on a drop tuned 6 string

+John Moore It's not stupid, go listen to Animals as Leaders and see what you can do with an 8. Just because YOU don't like it, doesn't mean it is silly, I love bands like Meshuggah etc. who use 8 strings.

+Chris Warrick B standard is nothing. Bro im talking about if you play drop A on a 6 string, you simply dont have enough high notes anymore... theres no point to playing drop A on a six string.

+chazzy licks 7's are definitely as far as I go. I love the extra lower range, but it's not for a chuggy sound. I use it for chords and harmonics. It gets annoying sometimes though, having to mute that extra string and not really being able to fret with the thumb too well, but it works in certain situations.

This virus situation really gives you chance to 'reflect' or go for 'return from future' assessments. First off, my early guitar escapades revolved around choice between 6 or 4 strings. (Lead/Rhythm or Bass.) - Yeah, long, long time ago. - With the advent of 7-8-9 stringers, you do have to go through a learning curve but, it's a bit like not having to decide on a role. In a way, you're combining skills into what is a distinct new role. Now, you play guitars that fit specific styles. - Personally, it's a challenge that's welcome, & rewarding too, in the long run. - Next challenge? Fan-frets! Bring 'em!

Ok with extended range guitars, depending on tuning, sounds to me like it's dippin into the base range. Now as cool as that all sounds for heavy metal I wonder how it would sound with a cleaner sound used in more traditional blues or even jazz? Can you slap the bass strings on the 9th string and " rub some funk on it?'

nice video! Personally I think the concept of adding more and more low strings is boring and predictable. I want an 8 string guitar giving me the low B and a high A string! Chapman guitars?

I have a Hellraiser Hybrid C-8. I messed with the string gauges a lot and switched to D'Addario NYXL strings. I finally ended up with 7, 9, 14, 20, 30 ,38, 52, 64 on them and they sound really clear. I did have a 74 on the 8th string and I think I might like it better. But with NYXL strings on there I get really good tone and a lot more versatility. I also like lighter tsrings because I have carpal tunnel, tendinitis and arthritis in both hands. But going lighter on the 7 and 8 strings seemed to give the notes more definition.

Get some Meshuggah signature pickups you will be surprised by the clean tones you get from them as well, especially playing through a fender amp.
