Johnathan I know this video was produced a year ago but I needed to share. About 10 year ago my newly retired neighbor got a new metalworking lathe. In his eagerness to get unpacked and moved into position he tipped it over and sadly crushed and killed him. I was the first to arrive hearing his screaming wife. That terrible memory is one I wish I could forget. I repeat this story hoping that anyone trying to move heavy tools any heavy load take the proper precautions and get help!

How heavy was that lathe? I have a mini lathe I will need help with as I have aged I can't lift 150 pounds nor would I want to with my lower back. I don't know anyone, so I am looking at machinery to help. I have a Sony CRT Trinitron 32 inch, and if you know those you know how heavy they are. Six years ago I had trouble with it but using my legs I managed to move it just enough out of the way, but no way would I do that now. I just saw a video I can't unsee of some Russian older machinist do a stupid thing in the shop with a lathe (it was on and he was in his coat when he bent over it spinning). It was like something out of a cartoon only I am not laughing. The still pictures of the body parts thrown all over the shop, and the horror on his partner. I can only imagine how much PTSD he must still have.

Thanks, will watch this with interest. Like the safety emphasis at the beginning. Had to sigh when the 1st method using a hand truck is described as using a "dolly". Dolly refers to a low platform with 4 wheels, vs. a hand truck usually with 2 wheels and a vertical extension for leverage and support.

The machinery skates are well worth the money for anything heavy. I have seen a Johnson bar but have never used one or knew what it was called. A Burke bar comes in handy for moving equipment to its final position and can be used for ripping apart wood forms and such.

Good video... I would definitely not lift that jointer that way! You're putting massive pressure on the indeed and out feed tables which are precision parts and if they rack your machine is a big boat anchor. Some jointers (like your earlier 1900's big daddy) have a full cast iron body under the tables and those you can pict up from underneath

My father and I moved old school, multi-ton cast iron printing presses from time to time. Steel pipes under the machine to roll it across the floor worked well. A Steel Strong arm and 2x4 pieces to get them up on the pipes. We called those steel rollers tanks or trucks. The pipes are a cheap alternative.

I moved a #13,000 pound lathe with a crowbar and a stack of 1 1/2 round bar. The hardest part was getting it onto the first bar. Once that was done we used the fork truck to push it onto the 2ed bar stock. Once the entire thing was on the bars it moved relatively well. Most big machines have pockets or a tounge casted into the bases so you can get bottle Jack's into the machine to get it in the air.

I did that today with my 1000 lbs bandsaw, I moved it 20’ across the shop. It only took 10 minutes by myself. I got the idea from my father when he moved his Bridgeport mill 20 years ago.

Good stuff, thanks. Another option is air skids or some sort of air cushion. These things used compressed air and can lift and allow you to move very heavy machinery easily. Cheers, David

I built frames with foot casters for everyone of my big machines. Once moved into position just screw the foot down to level the machine. Costs a little bit but worth it.

Nice of you moving small tools. I worked in a machine shop, the owner loved to move Big tools and machines, we used solid steel bars to roll giant machines down the shop floor. Big fork trucks. Like bigger then a box truck size.

Thanks! I'd never heard of those equipment skates. To get my SawStop contractor saw out of its carton, I attached a come-along to the floor joists in my basement, and tied ropes around the saw. The saw lifted out upside down, so I rolled it over in mid-air. Come-alongs are sometimes called hand winches, I think. They're handy for dislodging snagged trees, too.

Thanks, Jonathon!! I just learnt two things within 2 minutes into your video: place something at the bottom of the dolly and lower the centre of gravity of any pedastal tools. And that's after the advice to wear some PPE. Steel cap boots, of course. Gloves? With metal, if it ain't hot or sharp, it could STILL damage flesh! Kudos to you!!

thank you Katz . you hit on the one of the two things i hated doing ( not comfortable ) 250 ton press and moving big steel 12 - well up way up . we had machines lathes and mill and drill presses on the sub-tender that would hold a vw bug . moving big iron and i would get to swinging no way to stop it . lol i would not get in front of em at the time my 150 lb butt would not begin to stop that crap just wait it out . the press thats another long story

When I use a hoist or block and tackle, I prefer an A frame. Easy to build, and no need for a heavy beam.

Depends on how big the lath is but these tools might be way to small for what your doing. Rent a fork truck and pull the lath on a flat bed trailer lower then a truck bed to the ground. One to move a car would be better, but somthing you can put a bobcat on.

I should have seen this video a week ago when I had to manhandle my jointer off it's mobile stand to fix it. These methods would have saved bruised arms and a trip to the chiropractor and massage therapist. I'm now on the lookout for a cheap engine hoist!

Nice video. I. Never saw machine skates before. Harbor freight also sells a hydraulic lift cart with is good for putting some heavy stuff into a truck. For lighter stuff I have used plastic furniture sliders. We moved 5 sets of deck stairs across our sock in order to replace our dock boards using furniture sliders. Who would have thought???

Stairs. Many of us have basement shops and some help there would be greatly appreciated! I'm trying to figure out how to get my 400lb sawstop into my basement. Having never used an appliance dolly, I am a bit anxious about it.

Just a heads up on the HF engine hoist, a 1Ton model is not the weight it lifts at the end extended. I'd go with the 2Ton. I also love my 500# scissor cart from HF,. Although i wish i got the 1 ton model. It also works as a simple cart or a mobile work surface. It is heavy but easily stores under a bench

To add an 8th: Pallet jacks are great for moving everything around. They wheel easier than the shop crane, and if you put your machines on pallets (free) you can skip buying mobile bases. Better yet, buy a motorized one, they go stupid cheap at auctions (I've bought them for as low as $25 in working condition) and make moving things up to several tons super easy once you get it on them (which the shop crane is great for).

Great summary... good way to start out with the safety rules... yes all movements should be called out and acknowledged! We do it with heavy machinery... aircraft... no reason to skimp on a few words or half a second while moving 1800lbs worth of stuff. Force is mass times acceleration and on Earth that works out to a 10lb weight falling 6 feet hitting with about 64 ft lbs. If your literal foot is 12" by 6" (1/2 square foot) that's like 128lbs falling on your foot. YES, Steel-toed boots! Much appreciate the video. I didn't know these things could be so easily rented. Kind of a hassle to get them TO the shop and OUT of the shop back to the store... but cheap :) Thanks! Ehud Tucson AZ

Very good job in all demonstrations at the minute 6:30, I would lay down that machine in two pieces of 1x3x the length of the machine. This way it will be easier to insert the Johnson bar.

Nice video, man! The only heavy equipment I had in my Shop was the Radial Arm Saw. My workaround for getting it out of the Shop was watching the Guy move it with his 3 Sons when I sold it for $25...and man did they struggle! I never felt bad about it until writing this Comment...man I’m a jerk!

Here what I would use to lift heavy loads. If you have available, two scaffolding. They are 6 feet tall and can hold up to 900 lbs. Set up both one on the top of the other, don't place the bed. Get a 4x4 and put across the smaller side. Get a winch and hang it on the 4x4, lift your load to desired height, place the bed under and low it down.

outstanding video, very useful. I am trying to move around an old Bridgewood planer I bought. Initially it was moved with the tractor pallet forks and lift straps, but that was just to get it into the shop. It weighs about 550 pounds, way too heavy to bull around, and heavy enough to easily damage itself, and so step one I had to refabricate the stand with heavier steel. The original stand did not survive the move. But now it has to be lifted up off its side, and the tractor and lift straps are all off kilter. It dangles at these odd angles and cannot be set down level so it will stand evenly. I have an engine lift, but it is in another part of the state. So you gave me a lot of good ideas to try before buying another engine lift. Thank you

I have a thicknesser/planer on its way. Mine only weighs 400lbs, but that is still heavy enough to need thinking about. I have a plan and some friends to help me, but it's nice to have the engine hoist rental as a fall back.

I'm building a workshop in the back yard. Its floor level will be about 27 in. above grade. So I'm looking for a way to move my 600 lb. table saw from the garage, around the house to the back yard, and lift it to go in through the door of the workshop.....go!

I want to remove a small jointer sitting in a canned ham camper! My son was so strong! He put it in there in that small hallway. Now he is at rest and I am in limbo. I also have a nice table saw in our shop. We used a car lift with plywood, slid it out of the van, lowered the lift, and rolled it into place when we bought it. It sits on a metal frame with wheels. I have a large compressor, a large old metal brake, drill press, anvil on stand.. Now that I am alone people say I need to sell all the stuff. I can’t move the stuff! So I am using the work tables to sew quilts in a woodworking/ auto body shop where we used to make wooden frames and custom kitchens. And we restored a few cars. I have a nice dolly. And some skates for cars. I even have an engine hoist. A lot of machines are on wheels. I just love the shop , all the machines and tools and cabinets and shelves full of tools and stuff. Excellent video with some great tips! Do you think the engine hoist would be suitable to lift a plywood box that is 7.55 ft long x 4.1 ft wide x 2.3 ft high and about 1,000 lbs? I’m hoping to stack one box on top of another that’s just 2.5 feet off the ground, and just don’t have access to a forklift/pallet stacker. Been trying to figure out a solution for this. Thanks!

You give some good advice on moving shop equipment. I offer these comments based on my years of rigging all sorts of loads. . NEVER GET UNDER AN ELEVATED PIECE OF EQUIPMENT OR ANY LOAD. And be mindful you don't let your fingers or toes get under the load as you're moving it or when setting it down. Ask anyone with 9 fingers or toes why you shouldn't do this. . It's best to keep the load as low as possible when moving from one location to another. More or less drifting it across the floor just high enough so it's not contacting the floor. That way it can't fall very far, only an inch or two. . If you're going to use a chain hoist, you need to make sure what you are hanging the chain fall from can handle the load. The load INCLUDES the weight of the chain hoist and any rigging like straps or chains. I doubt most common garage ceiling joists are up to the task of lifting a 600# table saw plus the weight of the rigging. But whatever you are using for rigging gear, it all has to be sized to carry the load. And if you don't know what something weighs you have shouldn't be picking it up until you do. . If you are moving things within your shop work like an Egyptian. They didn't have chain falls, engine hoists, or Genies or other hoisting equipment, so they rarely picked things up. They elevated them onto rollers so they could move them. You can do the same with some lengths of 3/4 Sch. 40 pipe. With 3 or 4 pipe rollers you can easily move things with just a couple fingers. It can't fall because it's already on the ground.

Thanks Jon. All very good, but you are assuming paved, level in to the shop. How about when you can't get a truck into your shop, and the nearest driveway has an upslope to where you would unload? Or when you need to move the machine up a grass and dirt slope to get to the shop door? I've had both these problems.

I have a Rubbermaid 100 gallon tub filled with dirt. It weighs several hundred pounds but is sitting on pea gravel awaiting relocation to another part of the pea gravel filled yard. Short of renting a bobcat (which won't fit though my gate), any suggestions on how to move it?

Lyn, I would suggest an open trailer. Either rent or buy. One you can easily access over the sides, and slide things in and out.

hmm.. How would you get a double stacked pizza oven out? Each weigh about 1,500 lbs. But need to get that middle point where it is stacked. Once its up I can place a block of wood. But trying to figure out how to create that initial space...thanks for the video

Lots of good information. One caution if you are moving your band saw is to not put the straps under the table. The trunnions are not strong enough to bear the weight of the rest of the saw and they are prone to cracking or breaking. You could lose the whole load very easily and damage the table which would be costly to replace.

My 17" Grizzly band saw has a "hoisting hook" installed on the top of the machine. Gets a bit testy coming IN a standard height garage door, but going slow it works. And, of course, 2 or more people!!!!!!

If it was me I would have run your straps around the bottom of your jet jointer. I once moved a combo jointer/planer using the tables and it took me a day to realign the tables and make everything coplaner. Just a comment.

Drill press, tilt it over and take the head off on a woodworking or light duty drill press they are not very heavy even a 16" version.

Is there any lifting device to overcome steps into/out of the workshop? I've got a Grizzly helical head planer I need to move out of the shop that weighs approx 800 pounds and other than taking the thing completely apart I'm at a loss for ideas. It was moved into the shop with the help of 4 people but I don't want to relive that recipe for disaster (two of the helpers came close to losing fingers and toes. Thanks!

I've got a small step up into my shop, only 3" but enough to still be a headache. I built a ramp, then bolted a harbor freight winch to the floor on the far wall from the doorway. Get the machine in the doorway, on wheels (pallet jack is my preference), push a button, and it goes right in. I expect you could do the same, just need a little bit larger ramp - it'd be steeper, but the planer isnt *too* tall and top heavy.

@@MWMitman Thanks for the reply and you are right, that would have worked for getting the planer into the shop (gee, wish I'd thought of that earlier). My current problem is getting it back out of the shop (moving to new location) so I think my only practical solution is to build an A-Frame that stradles the steps with a block and tackle arrangement that moves. An engine hoist as suggested by Jonathan will not work because the leading wheels are always under the load. I could try to slide the planer/engine hoist down the steps but don't want to end up on America's Funniest Videos skiing down steps with an 800 pound planer and then through a block wall as it finally slows down. After all, what's the worst that could happen right?

I worked in a machine shop 7 years I always wore tennis shoes. Or boots without steel toes. I handled bundles of bars 20' long 1" to 6" 30 to 100 a bundle If I droped one of them bundles on my foot with steel toed boots on id loose my toes either way. A steel toe boot won't protect your toes but the bundle could come back over your foots instep then you'll never walk agine on that foot. My biggest fear was dropping a 2 lb part on my foot. You learn to move your feet out of the way really dam fast becuse it hurts. You'll only do it once. Yes I got bitched at for not having the correct footwear but I didnt make enough money to support my family and buy 100 plus dollar shoes when my pay check then was 150 for 40 hours work. I got paid chiken shit. I've moved plenty of machinery without steel toe boots. The shop owners middle name was move it.

I thought you’re not supposed to wear steel toes when lifting extremely heavy objects because if the object falls on your foot it could press the steel toe into your toes and cut them clean off

Dude not trying to hate on your show but if you’re going to show someone how to use machine dollies then first you need to learn the right way. You need to put plywood on top of the dollie and then sit the machine down onto them. If you tell people to sit the machine onto the dollies they will just be waiting for that machine to slide off and hurt them most likely.

Are you kidding? You need a video on how to move a drill press? I'm trying to move a 22,000 pound mill in the next few hours, or lose it and this is the best you tube has for moving heavy stuff. The stuff I am gonna try moving it with weigh more than your tools and equipment and I used wheel barrows.
