How to Survive Natural Disasters. Here’s a list of survival tips that can save your life in an emergency.
We live in a time when natural disasters occur more and more often and get more and more devastating. Many of us believe we should blame the human race for that. Whether it’s true or not, we all want to know how to survive when those disasters happen.
Some rules are universal for most natural disasters. A national campaign called Ready was started in the United States to inform the population about how to get ready for and survive in different emergency situations. It recommends having a basic survival kit to provide you with the most important things just in case. Remember you will need to have enough food, water, and other supplies for at least 72 hours after the disaster.
“Other supplies” include a battery powered weather radio, flashlight, first aid kit, a whistle, a dust mask, personal sanitation items (such as moist towelettes), pliers, can opener for food, maps of your area and an emergency cell phone with backup batteries.
TIMESTAMPS
Hurricane 0:40
Tornado 1:45
Tsunami 3:15
Flood 4:10
Avalanche 5:03
Wildfire 6:00
Earthquake 7:00
SUMMARY
- If a hurricane starts while you are driving, leave your vehicle and find a building to shelter in, or a ditch. Stopping in an overpass will not save you. If your home is a trailer and there is enough time to flee to a safe area - do it.
- If a tornado starts when you are in a public building, follow the same rules. You want to stay as low as possible. Avoid windows and open spaces such as auditoriums, gyms, and large hallways. Desks and benches can give you some extra protection if you get under them. It is impossible to outrun a tornado.
- Tsunamis are so fast they hit the coast minutes after the earthquake. Remember that tall buildings, including hotels right in the beach area, can provide an excellent shelter. In case a tsunami finds you at sea, stay there instead of going back to the coast. It won’t be a safe haven.
- Don’t try to be the bravest person around and stay in your house once you hear the evacuation warning. Leave for safety in higher grounds with your important papers in a waterproof container. If a flash flood gives you no time to evacuate and the water is all around you, don’t try to swim across it.
- When an avalanche starts, try to move to the side of the slope as fast as you can. There will be more snow in the center of the flow. To move faster, drop any heavy equipment you have on you. If you can’t escape it, try using a sturdy tree to keep you above the snow.
- If you find yourself in a wildfire area, it is critically important to ensure that you can breathe. If you fail to do it, you can pass out in the midst of a danger zone. Use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth and escape to safety.
- If an earthquake starts when you are inside, stay where you were. Experts say that during an earthquake you must drop to the floor, get underneath a table, cover your neck and head with one hand, and hold on with the other hand. Your entire body must be under the table. Don’t try to run out of the building - the exterior of a building is one of the most dangerous places.

When you are in an avalanche. Dig a small hole and spit out. If it lands on you again then you have to dig that way. You won't always have a rescue team. IF it does not land on you that means you are facing downwards and turn around a try the other side until it lands on you. Disgusting but life-saving.

A tip I heard for if you’re buried under snow in an avalanche, is to spit so you know which way is up. That way you’re not wasting time and energy digging in the wrong direction.
@janedoex8345
@janedoex8345 6 жыл бұрын
Lindsei Henderson That's not very reliable because if you spit you kinda force air out of your mouth so you already give it a direction, so you could fool yourself... you would also waste air while digging and won't make it if you are 14 feet under ...but you would not know it while running out of air..... there are inflatable jackets you can inflate while getting into the snow so you expand your body surface and are more likely to kind of "swim" up to the top of the avalanche and be buried just a foot deep or at least not too far down so you are easily found or even able to get out yourself.

*I remember that, one day I woke up to the sounds of loud noises and screaming. I headed to my window to see what was going on. Then when I look outside the window everything is dark and windy. I saw some people running to houses. So then I looked around and saw a tornado. I was in shock. I ran to my mom and woke her up. Then I woke my sister. Then my dad. We all discussed what we should do. We had a plan. We all hid in different places. Me and my sisters decided to hide in the closet. While my mum hid under a large desk. My dad hid with my mum instead under the desk. We waited and waited and then the sky turned normal.*

No. The earthquake thing is wrong. If you get under a desk or table, something can fall on top of it, and crush you. Your best bet is to get right in between a door frame. Door frames are very strong, and won't collapse unless a lot of preasure is put on top of them. The tornado thing is partly right. You do need to stay as low as possible. But you also need to find a room with no windows, and hunker down. When I was in my school, and the tornado drill went off, our teacher would take us in one of the school bathrooms, and make us all huddle together in a corner, covering our heads with the backs of our hands. I think that's a good way to try and survive a tornado inside a school or work. Another tip for surviving earthquakes, is if you have time, you can get several bed matteresses, (Sorry if I didn't spell that wrong) go into the center of a hallway, put them over you, and hunker down until it passes. This way, if something does happen to fall on top of you, the matteress stops it and breaks the fall so it doesn't damage you so badly. Thank you for reading! Hope these small tips help! Goodbye!!

Don't listen to them, they gave terrible advice for a hurricane, if you're in a basement it'll get flooded and you will drown. Also hurricanes last for days, you're not going to be under a piece of furniture the whole time. They also say that if a hurricane starts while you're driving to go in a ditch, there are 2 things wrong with that: hurricanes cant "start" on land, they form in the ocean, and the second problem is the same as the furniture one, you're not gonna stay in a ditch for 3 days. In fact if a hurricane is in progress (and the roads aren't flooded) you should STAY in your vehicle and evacuate if the storm is bad enough. They also say to not go under an overpass, that info is irrelevant in a hurricane, but it is common knowledge for surviving a tornado (and not a hurricane). They also say to go to a secure basement, closet, or bathroom without windows, this is ALSO TORNADO ADVICE (once again NOT a hurricane). In fact, literally ALL the hurricane advice is actually tornado advice and in some cases could actually INCREASE the chance of you dying if you followed them in a hurricane! Look up videos from professionals, don't listen to "BRIGHT SIDE", they have no clue what they are talking about.
@sydney4911
@sydney4911 5 жыл бұрын
The Hurricane advice sounded more like advice for a tornado. Hurricanes don't just start up, you have plenty of warning time (usually days worth) to take precautions. I also was taken back when the video advised going to a basement. How many basements exist in Florida? Get in a ditch? The ditches are to move the water away from the area and are most likely flooded. The whole video is filled with misleading and wrong information.

I can relate to natural disasters like this. One time when I was in 6th grade in 2008, it was a stormy day and the lights kept flickering on and off when I was in history class, our teacher said that if a tornado warning was to be issued, they would have us take shelter under our desk. And sure enough in my next class, the announcement said that we were under a tornado warning and asked us to take shelter, it was scary. However, a few minutes later, turns out nothing happened.

Your teacher knew zilch about tornado safety. If you're in a school during a tornado, a classroom is one of *THE WORST* places to take shelter in (they almost always have windows and just one wall between you and the outside). Ideally, seek out a restroom or a janitor's closet on the first floor, as close to the center of the building as you can find.

The tip about having a weather radio is great after Hurricane Laura hit we saw the cell network go down for a long time, many residents were using an app that needed less service and functioned more as a walkie-talkie to call for help or check-in. Sadly most homes in areas that Hurricanes hit do not have basements as options, we have heard tons of stories of families listening as their home was pulled away around them while hiding in bathrooms.

Same here. I live on the West Coast of Canada (Burnaby, British Columbia). We had a tsunami warning on January 23rd of this year. Unfortunately, there were mixed results. Some people heard the warning and fled to higher ground while others did not recognise the number and turned off their phones. Others said that they were alerted by firefighters and said that British Columbia needs tsunami warning sirens.

@eliz4micor
@eliz4micor 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, it would be very unlikely for sharks to swim around during a tsunami. First off, wouldn't sharks be blown away or kicked around if they were in an actual tidal wave? Secondly, sharks would be terrified of a tsunami and more likely swim away than go search for lunch!

Yeah bc in the woods and I'm taking a hike. If I see a wildfire I'm TOTALLY just gonna have a WET cloth in my back pocket. Because that's something I carry around all the time. Specifically a WET one XD Ya know, a lot of these things are easier said than done, especially when you are gonna be freaking out regardless if some one tells you to calm down Because my first instinct if I'm in the water and I see a tsunami is to go surfing on it XD

Do they just GUESS what they say? So listen: My best friend went on vacation to his grandma's 4 years ago. A big earthquake occurred, and his and his family's life was in great danger since he was near the starting point of the earthquake. According to him, the whole house started shaking badly, books falling with the shelves right after. His grandparents stayed low under tables, while his parents did the same. Do you know what his idea was? While the video said to go under a table and hold on, he said: And he was right. Pieces of the ceiling, fell on the tables, breaking the plank on the top, cutting it in two, while they got only scratches. I believe you know what would have happened if they did not listen to him. As for the fire, staying in a vehicle is quite dangerous as it may overheat and explode. If you aren't completely surrounded by fire, go for it and get out. Stay away from trees and try to find a clearing if you are deep in the forest. Don't enter buildings as it says because the fire may block you in, and sometimes make it impossible for firefighters to even get close. If you want to know how to survive in these situations, ask professional people such as firefighters, police, and other people that have gone through rescues in these situations. You can even ask a friend that went through something like this. Ask them what they did. It might come useful you never know!

I have to disagree about going into a basement during a hurricane (it's a tornado you want to do that). Basements flood easily, which is why there aren't too many in houses down south. Also, some of the tips they mention in hurricanes, like not using overpasses, are actually for tornados. Since hurricanes last for hours, I doubt anyone's going to try to shelter under an overpass. Also, they should've had 8 tips, so they could include getting stuck outside during a thunderstorm.
