From Dracula's Castle to a tomato-throwing festival to actual literal hell, these non-regulation battle arenas are fraught with risks, inconveniences and garment-ruining tomato juice. If you or I were to suddenly find ourselves in hell - that is, a, physical manifestation of the concept of an afterlife where the wicked are punished for all eternity - then we’d probably turn around and try heading back to Earth, possibly to set up a few orphanages when we got back, just to be safe.
Not so the mortal kombatants of Mortal Kombat, who, from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 onwards, are happy to have their fights in a place where the doors are made of skulls, the interior decoration theme is ‘tortured skeletons’, and everything that isn’t bones is covered in molten lava.
Dracula’s Castle is another obviously unwise location for a bout, but apparently the cast of Super Smash Bros Ultimate didn't realise, because thanks to the Castlevania games, the whole gang is heading to Dracula’s house to have a dust-up.
The architecture itself, with its spooky stained glass and creepy carvings, already screams "stay away". But then there’s the fact the place is full of mummies, gorgons, Frankensteins, crying mask faces, actual Death himself and werewolves flinging themselves through the windows.
This can hardly be conducive to the kind of focus you require for a world-class fight. And is also terrifying.
What’s more Dracula is there, the place being his home, and isn’t super keen to see you. So much for that famous Transylvanian hospitality.
