Mashima has a true talent in making people emotional, Rave, Fairy Tail and Edens Zero (I know he has more, but I haven't seen those) all have amazing moments that expertly pull your heartstrings.

And it also shows that despite his usual goofiness, Natsu clearly understands that at a time like this when Lucy had just lost her father, that what she needs the most is to be left alone so that she can grieve and mourn, but to also make it clear that he'll be there for her whenever she needs him. He may not be the most "book smart" (though considering his background, that's hardly his fault), but he very clearly understands how it feels to have lost a parent. And the fact that he lashed out at those two girls for their remarks in an effort to protect Lucy's feelings shows just how much she really means to him, so it's little wonder that she reciprocates in the same way. If there's one thing Mashima does right, it's building up very strong connections (good or bad) between characters, and this includes those with romantic undertones. And considering Mashima also created Rave Master (which is Fairy Tail's predecessor), it's little wonder considering how the relationship between Haru & Elie played out. But to me, the saddest part is thinking about how that poor receptionist must have felt to be left with the awful task of having to inform Lucy that her father had passed away just *one month* prior, and that if they had been able to return to Fiore just a bit sooner she could have gotten to see Jude one last time and truly reconcile face-to-face. It always sucks to be the bearer of bad news, but it's even worse when it's news like *THAT* more than anything else. While he certainly made mistakes as her father, it's obvious that Jude always loved her, he just failed to realize he was pushing her away with his actions until it was too late and she had run off on her own.
