70 MPH Illinois Central Death Star SD70 Leads Disabled Amtrak City of New Orleans 4-15-2024

The locomotives on Amtrak's northbound City of New Orleans had some sort of mechanical or technical problem overnight on April 14, 2024 while traveling through Mississippi. With no other Amtrak units available to take over, Canadian National supplied former Illinois Central "Death Star" SD70 No. 1027, still in original paint, to pull the train the rest of the way to Chicago. This is likely the first (and possibly the last) time an IC-painted locomotive has pulled an Amtrak train since the CN/IC merger in 1999.

@@NoThankYouNoName it’s hard to keep a crowd that large and long under control with how little authority KCS and CP have down there. It’s extremely difficult to. And besides the point, same shit happened to UP 844 and no one is making jokes about it like 2816.

IC used some SD40As on the CONO, although some fans thought they were SDP45s, they just looked the same, but there was no steam generator, just the longer fuel tanks. I do not think I still have pictures like that from my college days in the early 80's. Amtrak, cheaper than the bus.

If one is running, all that HEP load will severely limit acceleration and limit hill-climbing ability. While Metra have put as many as 11 gallery cars behind a single F40PH, the acceleration is sluggish and they are run like this on limited-stop trains only as a result. Local trains that are 11-12 cars during rush hour alway have two units.

CN acquired IC in 1999, the same year this locomotive was built. It was pretty common to see Seaboard System and Chessie locomotives on CSX trains well into the late ‘90s, a full decade after their merger. The predecessor railroads would paint their new locomotives in their own paint all the way up until the date of the merger. Even though the merger had been in the works for years, each railroad kept turning out locomotives in their own colors. And since it doesn’t make too much sense to repaint a new locomotive, they roll with it for a few years. 25 years is a long time, though; also, the fact that 1999 was 25 years ago makes me feel pretty old… The opposite of this would be the “Kodachrome SPSF” locomotives from the ‘80s, when Southern Pacific and Santa Fe were trying to merge. That ended up not happening, but if it had, they already had locomotives wearing the paint. I guess I was most shocked that they made a standard cab locomotive in 1999. Great video.
