I have unexpectedly rescued a huge collection of records in the family that's been in storage for more than 30 years and somehow this unclaimed collection ended up at my brother "Charles's" house. I found out by chance the lot was going to be thrown out unless someone in the family claimed it so I headed out to Charles's house asap to check out the records.

Agreed. The 90s was the best time. People were getting rid of their collections right up till the early 2000s and record shops were shutting down. Luckily I managed to re-build my original collection of records way before vinyl prices went crazy. Thanks for stopping by and watching.

I was so intrigued this morning when I saw an Asian American, like me, talking about vinyl. On KZfaq. In the 70’s it seems like so many of us gravitated towards RnB, though I think we embraced all forms of music. Wasn’t unusual to put The Ohio Players funk on right after Led Zeppelin’s rock. Then in the 80’s the albums you showed from your collection. One thing is true, your (our) knowledge from liner notes made the experience that much richer. Thanks for sharing! I’ll be sure to checkout the rest of your channel.

Brand new to your channel. That was amazing all the albums your brothers had and then you found more of your albums. Some great 80s music. That Alien soundtrack looks quite interesting. It was nice to hear the story behind them. I have had shrink wrap on my albums for over 40 years. It will only warp if it is on extremely tight otherwise I found it helped to protect the album. The stack with the "Alien" soundtrack had lots of classic film soundtrack records too. Just too many to list. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated.

Yes, good taste with Gene Dunlap with the Ridgeway Sisters. That Quiet Storm sound isn't really talked about that much now but is absolutely my favorite. I guess there's really not much that's mega rare in that style. Sweet soul harmony which is between doo-wop and Quiet Storm can get rather rare with certain 45 only groups. Discogs refuses to recognize Quiet Storm as a style and replied that it was a marketing gimmick. It is a style because it brings out jazz elements to elongated soul ballads with strong harmonies and vocals. I group together when you really can't separate out the artists like James Brown, JB's, Maceo Parker, and Fred Wesley. Same way with Fleetwood Mac and their member's solo albums where multiple members would reappear. Then there's the Buckingham/McVie album and the Buckingham/Nicks album. Those are tough not to group together because it's a continuum. Jazz Shepherd has a unique way of filing by label and then by catalog number which isn't a bad way to do jazz. It lets you know where the gaps are! I guess it could be tricky when they release older works a decade or two later. I prefer by artist and then chronologically by recording date.
@retromusings
@retromusings Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. I never realised "Quiet Storm" could possibly be categorized as a jazz genre. Gene Dunlap played with Earl Klugh. Both are from Detroit as are the Ridgeway Sisters. Klugh introduced Dunlap to Capital Records. The Ridgeway Sisters are amazing. The 2 tracks on the record, Before You Break My Heart and Should I Take Her Back or Let Her Go featuring Earl Klugh are really wonderful. The piano solo on Before You Break My Heart is pretty awesome. Greg Moore plays on the lp too. I generally organise my records by genre and then alphabetically by artist. I'm looking forward to giving all these records a proper clean and listening to them.
@DorianPaige00
@DorianPaige00 Жыл бұрын
@@retromusings If you played Smokey Robinson's "Quiet Storm" for somebody today, they'd say that's jazz. Sax solos, live instrumentation, and a more loose feel of the beat have been lacking in music for at least 30 years. In current R&B, those traits are not present. Furthermore, WHUR in Washington DC created the Quiet Storm format and they were mostly a jazz station during the day run by Howard University. I just got done playing Mandrill's "Love song" and it's like a fusion of soul, jazz, and even a bit classical. There's a lot of ideas in this music being explored but it's down tempo and palatable unlike the freer forms of jazz. In order for music to get to this level, you need musicians and writers that know theory. Norman Connors, Michael Henderson, and even Burt Bacharach all used jazz chords and harmonies and this music is an extension of that.
@retromusings
@retromusings Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for all this information. There is so much to learn about these artists, genres and so forth. I had no idea the "Quiet Storm" format started out in D.C. I have Smokey's "Quiet Storm" record. It's fantastic with so many great songs on there like "Baby Backatcha", "The Agony and Ecstasy" and "Quiet Storm".

Yes. There's an excellent Malo lp in there...the one with the stunning artwork by Mexican painter Jesús Helguera and featuring the song "Sauvecito". The record fair sounds great. I''ve never been to Roseville. Please do put the event details here in the comments section. I hadn't realized there isn't a "message" link. Will try and sort that out. Thanks for letting me know.

👋Hi Like you i like Bryan Ferry. He recorded alot of good albums ,as frontman with Roxy Music, and as a solo artist. In your Mind from 1977, is cool, and Boys and Girls from the 1980s. I love Deborah Harry and Blondie. I had that album Parallel Lines on vinyl in 1978 too. I was 18 in 1978. Amazing collection of records that was your brother's. I'm sure there are some valuable ones.

Those were great years for great music. Roxy Music was so big. Blondie's Deborah Harry is still going strong. She's amazing. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

@@retromusings Deborah Harry is amazing. She's in her seventies and performs still. I have viewed her recently in concert on KZfaq.

I' m not sure. I have yet to go through the 800 lps in the collection properly due to lack of time. It's just sitting like a mountain in my home. Hoping to get cracking on managing the whole vinyl haul in the autumn. Thanks for stopping by and watching.
