Didn't Nascar ban Hemi Pushrod motor too? It makes since they would ban this engine to then. Most overhead cam engines have a hemi head type head. They just use a cam on top of each head instead of pushods.

My dad owned one of those Fairlanes when I was very young in the early 70's. It wasn't a race car, it was almost just a stock Fairlane with a loud exhaust and wide tires on the back. I loved that old car

Michael Shuey yes, they were a great second hand car to add some mags to, and jack up the rear. Every now and then, a guy would find a 390 car. The 352 was very slow. Tons of room. Run around with six people no problem.

This is one of those things that really grabs me tight from the automotive community. Above all else, I'm an artist first and it motivates a lot of what I do. I am not an engineer by any stretch of the definition. I love to see these cars that not only have this incredible attention to detail, but you can hear the passion and the pride of the artist as he talks about his masterpiece. The man is truly a craftsman in his own league, and I would argue that he may only share that league with the creator of Icon.

It was banned simply because Ford refused to build 500 cars with this engine for the public, one of NASCAR'S asine rules, due the beast stock made 650 HP with 1 750 cfm Holley 4v,and 675 Hp with 2 cfm 4v's, so Ford deemed this monster was too powerful for the public YES. So Ford by being super chicken shit never made this magnificent engine for the public, and it'd ruled NASCAR from its 200 HP advantage, the most powerful N/A V-8 in that era, and still today, the engine of choice for dragsters. Only a handful are around but are a direct bolt on to any true FE 427,plus it's 8 ft.long steel timing chain and gears! AWESOME

Shit box I agree. As far as exterior styling goes the 66 & 67 Fairlane Hrd Tops are my favorite. I also like the lesser known 66 & 67 Mercury Comet Caliente/Cyclone/Cyclone GT almost as much (especially from the A pillar on back). I miss seeing all of the 60's Muscle & Pony cars out on the streets every Friday & Saturday night. Truth be told though....today's Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger (Charger) would put a whipping on the Muscle Cars of past. Although, the cars of the 60's were the pinnacle styling IMO.

Dylan McCallister - Ford did the "hemi" back in the'40s as the ArDun head conversion for the flathead powered Ford trucks, which suffered from inherent cooling deficiencies at high altitude (on the ground still, not in the air). The designer of the Ardun heads was none other than Zora-Arkus Duntov, the father of the Corvette (get it? - ARkus DUNtov?) Interesting how all this automotive history sahakes out, no?

Pure automotive art. Some people's dream cars are lambos and bugattis..... cars like this are mine. My dad had a dark metallic green 66' Fairlane GTA with a 390 and later on a 68 or 69 Torino 428scj, white with black stripes. I was too young to remember the Fairlane he had very well, but I do remember him ripping on that Torino. It sure sounded awesome. If you heard him say "Hang on kids!" You were a split second away from having your head pinned to the seat. I do remember he only had it a short time until he pulled the engine and took it to his machine shop to shave the heads and lighten the crank amongst other things. It REALLY ripped when he was done with it. I would love to have one but they have gotten really expensive. I've had a nice notch back 65 stang with a built 351w in it and loved it. Wish I wouldn't have sold it now. I'd like to build restomod 66 Fairlane one day.

She handeled like a pig with the big block. Saved up for a year and built a mild 302, had her on the dyno at 329hp 358ft/ib, still has 14ib of vacuum at idle, and so far ive averaged 23mpg highway (have a 5 speed with OD and 3.73 rear) no idea city as i play with her to much light to light😬. Do her right and shell treat you well man, also check the rubber line that runs from the tank to the vent tube. Decades later (two years ago), it was sold at the Mecum auction in Florida for $110,000. And it was painted just like my Dad had it when he raced. It's name was Black Magic. I'm hoping to see it again someday. It was awesome seeing that car on TV.

Love the old stuff. The World of Speed museum in Wilsonville, Oregon, has one of Ned Jarrett's NASCAR Fairlanes on display. It still rocks its Holman-Moody prepped 427 and lots of other cool features, like the in-cabin adjusters for jacking weight on or off the rear corners of the chassis. But it's crude as hell with a minimal rollbar, stock Fairlane bucket seats, and a stock steering wheel wrapped in black tape. Imagine spending four hours in one of those bastards without a "cool suit" in Alabama on an August afternoon, when the in-car temperatures ran 140 degrees. The old drivers had cast-iron balls.

I had one of these cars, It was the first car I had just out of high school. I sold it three times and people gave it back twice so I kept the handles to the doors and sold it for parts and it never came back. I still have the door handles. That was 50 years ago and I still have the door handles. They are so cool. They are made of metal and fold down out of the way and the lift up to open the door.
